Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) mapping with a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is commonly used for chemical characterization of materials. However, STEM-EDXS quantification becomes challenging when the phases constituting the ...

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an essential anode reaction for the generation of fuels through water splitting or CO2 electroreduction. Mixed metal oxides containing Co, Fe or Ni have proved to be the most promising OER electrocatalysts in alkaline ...

A long-standing problem in the application of solid-state nanopores is the lack of the precise control over the geometry of artificially formed pores compared to the well-defined geometry in their biological counterpart, that is, protein nanopores. To date ...

The ability to obtain three-dimensional (3-D) information about morphologies of nanostructures elucidates many interesting properties of materials in both physical and biological sciences. Here we demonstrate a novel method in scanning transmission electro ...

This work focuses on the complex ferroelastic/ferroelectric domain structure in the prototypical ferroelectric PbTiO3 epitaxially strained on (110)o-oriented DyScO3 substrates, with a 22 nm-thick bottom SrRuO3 electrode. High quality epitaxial growth has b ...

Achieving both volatile and nonvolatile resistive switching in the same material platform is a key milestone towards the development of dense hardware-based neuromorphic computing. We show that, by suitable choice of electrode metals, a single oxide film c ...

The single-layer graphene film, when incorporated with molecular-sized pores, is predicted to be the ultimate membrane. However, the major bottlenecks have been the crack-free transfer of large-area graphene on a porous support, and the incorporation of mo ...

Optical nanoantennas have a great potential for enhancing light-matter interactions at the nanometer scale, yet fabrication accuracy and lack of scalability currently limit ultimate antenna performance and applications. In most designs, the region of maxim ...

Rare-earth nickelates (chemical formula RNiO3, R being a rare-earth cation) display a temperature-dependent metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) together with a breathing distortion of the NiO6 octahedra units at a temperature ranging from 0 to 600 K depend ...

Despite a growing interest in two-dimensional polymers, their rational synthesis remains a challenge. The solution-phase synthesis of a two-dimensional polymer is reported. ADNA-based monomer self-assembles into a supra-molecular network, which is further ...

Nanoscale mapping of the distinct electronic phases characterizing the metal-insulator transition displayed by most of the rare-earth nickelate compounds is fundamental for discovering the true nature of this transition and the possible couplings that are ...

Metabolic interactions with endosymbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellate Symbiodinium spp. are fundamental to reef-building corals (Scleractinia) thriving in nutrient-poor tropical seas. Yet, detailed understanding at the single-cell level of nutrient assim ...

A method is presented for the quantitative investigation of microstructure and texture evolution in polycrystalline thin films based on in-plane automated crystal orientation mapping in transmission electron microscopy, from the substrate up. To demonstrat ...

In this work, we report on the efficiency of single InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) grown on thin (

The question whether beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) can form a solid solution with beta-calcium pyrophosphate (beta-CPP) and/or hydroxyapatite (HA) has still not been solved. For this reason, wet-chemically synthesized beta-TCP powders with only 20 p ...

A new study is presented on the electro-deoxidation of porous TiO2 precursors in molten calcium chlo- ride electrolytes. It is shown that by reducing precursor open porosity from standard values of ≥25% to ∼11–12%, such that there is insufficient free volu ...

A growth of grain triplets is identified in vapor deposited, a-texture polycrystalline zinc oxide thin films, using a combination of transmission electron microscopy-based automated crystal orientation mapping and high-resolution imaging. Each triplet cons ...

Recently, there has been significant interest in using dielectric nanocavities for the controlled scattering of light, owing to the diverse electromagnetic modes that they support. For plasmonic systems, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is now an e ...

Crystallographic point defects (PDs) can dramatically decrease the efficiency of optoelectronic semiconductor devices, many of which are based on quantum well (QW) heterostructures. However, spatially resolving individual nonradiative PDs buried in such QW ...

In biological environments, the surface of nanoparticles (NPs) are modified by protein corona (PC) that determines their biological behavior. Unfortunately, in vitro tests still give different PC than in vivo tests causing in vitro-in vivo discrepancy; hen ...
