In this paper, we present the first CMOS SPAD with performance comparable or better than that of the best custom SPADs, to date. The SPAD-based design, fully integrated in 180 nm CMOS technology, achieves a peak PDP of 55% at 480nm with a very broad spectr ...

The SPADnet FP7 European project is aimed at a new generation of fully digital, scalable and networked photonic components to enable large area image sensors, with primary target gamma-ray and coincidence detection in (Time-of-Flight) Positron Emission Tom ...

Significance: Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) allows label-free, non-invasive investigation of microvascular dynamics deep within tissue, such as cerebral blood flow (CBF). However, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in DCS limits its effective cerebra ...

Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) is a promising technique for noninvasive measurement of blood flow, especially for cerebral blood flow where other noninvasive techniques have shortcomings. Conventional DCS often requires multiple simultaneous measurements to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) especially when probing deep into the brain with large source-detector separations where photons are scarce. However, this limits scalability when using discrete optical detectors. This study demonstrates t

Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) imagers can perform fast time-resolved imaging in a compact form factor, by exploiting the processing capability and speed of integrated CMOS electronics. Developments in SPAD imagers have recently made them compatible ...

This work presents the characterization results and methods used to determine the reconstruction of a 22Na point source placed in a coincidence setup. For this purpose, a novel, fully-integrated, reconfigurable feed-forward artificial neural network was im ...

This work presents a novel InGaAs/InP SPAD structure fabricated using a selective area growth (SAG) method. The surface topography of the selectively grown film deposited within the 70 mu m diffusion apertures is used to engineer the Zn diffusion profile t ...

Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are widely used today in time-resolved imaging applications. However, traditional architectures rely on time-to-digital converters (TDCs) and histogram-based processing, leading to significant data transfer and processing challenges. Previous work based on recurrent neural networks has realized histogram-free processing. To further address these limitations, we propose a novel paradigm that eliminates TDCs by integrating in-sensor spike encoders. This approach enables

We present a 1 Mpixel single-photon avalanche diode camera featuring 3.8 ns time gating and 24 kips frame rate, fabricated in 180 nm CMOS image sensor technology. We designed two pixels with a pitch of 9.4 mu m in 7 T and 5.75 T configurations respectively ...

Single-photon 3D cameras can record the time-of-arrival of billions of photons per second with picosecond accuracy. One common approach to summarize the photon data stream is to build a per-pixel timestamp histogram, resulting in a 3D histogram tensor that ...

Digital silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) have emerged in the recent past as a viable low cost alternative to photomultiplier tubes in positron emission tomography systems, providing multiple timestamps, energy and scintillation coordinates at high spatial ...

We present a new, handheld system for in vivo detection of radiotracers. The detection is based on scintillators coupled to Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) and aimed at direct positron detection. The battery-powered system is wire-lessly connected to a PC. A graphical user interface allows controlling the probe functions and monitoring count rates, battery voltage and temperature. The probe is fully compatible with standard sterilisation procedures and has been successfully used in pre-clinical trials with

All-solid-state time-resolved cameras based on CMOS single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays have made very significant advances since the fabrication of the first CMOS SPADs back in 2003. These natively digital sensors are now available in large format ...

We present a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) developed in 55 nm bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) technology, which achieves high photon detection probability (PDP) while its breakdown voltage is lower than 20 V. To enhance the PDP performance, the SPAD junctio ...

Event cameras capture the world at high time resolution and with minimal bandwidth requirements. However, event streams, which only encode changes in brightness, do not contain sufficient scene information to support a wide variety of downstream tasks. In ...

While CMOS single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) technology has steadily advanced, improving noise, timing resolution, and sensitivity, spatial resolution has been increasing as well. The increase in the number of pixels has made a comprehensive analysis of ...

The overall sensitivity of frontside-illuminated, silicon single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays has often suffered from fill factor limitations. The fill factor loss can however be recovered by employing microlenses, whereby the challenges specific t ...

Designing SPADs with high sensitivity in a wide wavelength range is crucial since the applications utilizing SPAD-based sensors target different parts of the spectrum. Here, we introduce a novel technique to achieve a wider sensitivity spectrum through the ...

Precise monitoring of cardiac electrophysiology in vitro is crucial to understanding heart function and cardiac disease. However, high-throughput, contact-free methods for directly measuring excitation–contraction coupling remain limited. Here, we introduce a paradigm for quantitative electrophysiological imaging that combines fluorescence lifetime and intensity information to capture dynamic cardiac signals with high fidelity. We show that lifetime measurements are intrinsically decoupled from motion artif

Microchannel plates are electron multipliers widely used in applications such as particle detection, imaging, or mass spectrometry and are often paired with a photocathode to enable photon detection. Conventional microchannel plates, made of glass fibers, ...
