Autonomous vehicles can react faster than humans, they have more accurate perception and do not get distracted, sleepy or intoxicated. Autonomous vehicles could also increase the capacity of our current roads by allowing cars to be driven more closely to each other. Accordingly, driverless cars seem to be imminent. One of the challenges with autonomous vehicles is their performance at intersections. This performance directly depends on the level of cooperation between the vehicles.

Projects such as "The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument" (DESI) [1] or "The Multi Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph" (MOONS) [5] are developing spectrographs, composed of more than thousand of optical fibers in a confined hexagonal focal pla ...

Despite the rise in services generating learning analytics, there is a lack of standard models and guidelines for data integration and aggregation to inform the design choices of applications supporting learning analytics. We propose a bottom-up, user-driv ...

After years of quest by the computer-supported collaborative work community for true user satisfaction, social software and communities of practice turn out to be the enabling frameworks for natural and effective collaborative learning and knowledge manage ...

In this paper, a modified TF-IDF approach is proposed to recommend experts by inferring search query topics using metadata. A multi-disciplinary reputation metric is also introduced to select people with specific expertise. The approach is validated on Mendeley corpus using a prototypal expert mining platform, Magnifico. The user interface of the platform is also discussed.

This paper reports on the successful use of Graasp, a social media platform, by university students for their collaborative work. Graasp features a number of innovations, such as administrator-free creation of collaborative spaces, context-aware recommenda ...

Robotic fiber positioners play a vital role in the generation of massive spectroscopic surveys. The more complete a positioners set is coordinated, the more information its corresponding spectrograph receives during an observation. The complete coordinatio ...

This paper discusses the adoption of bottom-up social software tools in formal learning environments. This is believed to enhance the learning experience of today’s young generation characterized by being technology savvy and keen on social networking. As ...

Coordination of autonomous non-point agents in four-way crossings is studied in this work. A control scheme based on artificial potential functions is proposed in order to coordinate holonomic agents whose aim is to pass through an intersection while avoidi ...

For patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, appropriate control of blood glucose concentrations is vital. Exercise is one of the disturbances that can affect these concentrations. Therefore, predictions in the presence of exercise are useful among others f ...

Interacting with knowledge in a timely fashion is critical for the success of humanitarian missions. At the same time, the places where humanitarian action is needed are often those where Internet connection is poor or not available at all, making digital ...

Over the past years, the field of small unmanned aerial vehicles has grown significantly and several applications have appeared, requiring always more autonomous flight. An important remaining challenge for fully autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles is coll ...

The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne is developing a Web 2.0 social software called eLogbook and designed for sustaining interaction, collaboration, and learning in online communities. This chapter describes the 3A model on which eLogbook is based as well as the main services that the latter provides. The proposed social software has several innovative features that distinguish it from other classical online collaboration solutions. It offers a high-level of flexibility and adaptability so that it c

Gamification aims to enhance the educational experience by enabling students to have fun with technology. Although research in the field has previously looked into the effectiveness of gamification, reviews of existing studies show that in the context of e ...

This work presents a cooperative yielding maneuver planner that allows automated vehicles circulating inside single-lane roundabouts to create feasible merging gaps for oncoming cars. The maneuver is triggered once its impact on the predicted evolution of ...

In contemporary engineering education, project-based learning (PBL) has emerged as a prominent pedagogical approach to foster transversal skills like collaboration and communication. However, effective supervision and guidance of student groups in PBL pres ...

To tackle the challenges of the 21st century, future scientists and engineers have to understand the interplay between societal challenges and technical solutions as early as possible in their education. They also have to develop the communication and the ...

This paper introduce the smart device paradigm and it usage to streamline the development of the next generation of online labs where more intelligence is placed at the server side and little or no assumption is made about the client. The requirements, the ...

The integration of generative AI into summative assessments is both a trend and an added value to ease and scale up the evaluation of students in higher education. This paper discusses the implementation of a design-based research approach for the elicitation and the development of an innovative generative AI solution aiming at supporting educators to create personalized exams that respond to different educational objectives, disciplines, and competence levels.
