The European Commission is funding a large-scale research project on federated online laboratories (Labs) for education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at School. The main educational focus is on inquiry learning and the main te ...

To improve the resolution of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) a two-stage mechanical system, a so called Differential Delay Line (DDL), is developed jointly by the EPFL and the Observatory of Geneva. The system is designed to reach nanometer ...

The eLogbook is a Web-Based collaborative environment particularly adapted to the needs of communities of practice. It is deployed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and developed within the framework of the Palette European Pr ...

In engineering education, laboratories represent an important academic resource as they provide practical training in addition to the fundamental theories. However, the acquisition of new machinery and the maintenance of the equipment imply a large investm ...

Driven by the rising popularity of chatbots such as ChatGPT, there is a budding line of research proposing guidelines for chatbot design, both in general and specifically for digital education. Nevertheless, few researchers have focused on providing concep ...

The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is currently using a Web-based experimentation environment to support laboratory activities in engineering education. The key service for the acceptance of the learning modalities and the appropriation of ...

In this paper, we first discuss the concept of Personal Learning Environment (PLE) with respect to higher- education institutions and Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). This discussion rapidly confronts us to the place of the PLE and self-directed learn ...

Astrobot swarms are used to capture astronomical signals to generate the map of the observable universe for the purpose of dark energy studies. The convergence of each swarm in the course of its coordination has to surpass a particular threshold to yield a ...

Convinced by the important role of CoPs (communities of practice) and the innovative learning modality they offer, the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne is currently developing a framework to sustain interaction, collaboration, and learning in labor ...

This paper presents an initiative for integrating leading edge remote experimentation and synchronous collaboration solutions as a proof of concept to pave the way towards comprehensive learning environments for live interaction, not only between people th ...

Benefiting from the advent of social software, information sharing becomes pervasive. Personalized rating systems have emerged to evaluate the quality of user-generated content in open environment and provide recommendation based on users’ past experience. ...

This paper presents the findings of a study on the acceptability in higher education of a Web 2.0 collaborative application, namely eLogbook. The latter offers several features for sustaining collaboration and supporting personal and group learning. It was ...

Collision avoidance, in particular between robots, is an important component for autonomous robots. It is a necessary component in numerous applications such as human-robot interaction, automotive or unmanned aerial vehicles. While many collision avoidance ...

In the framework of the European Integrated Project PALETTE, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is developing the eLogbook Web 2.0 social software. The purpose of eLogbook is to support tacit and explicit knowledge management in communitie ...

The design of effective trust and reputation mechanisms for personal learning environments (PLEs) is believed to be a promising research direction. In this paper, we propose a 4-dimensional trust model that complies with the specific requirements of PLEs. ...
