Electrical measurement is a widely used technique for the characterization of nanofluidic devices. The electrical conductivity of electrolytes is known to be dependent on temperature. However, the similarity of the temperature sensitivity of the electrical ...

We present a tunable interference filter for infrared and visible light that scans the desired part of the optical spectrum within milliseconds. A single pixel detector measures serially the intensity at selected wavelengths. This concept avoids expensive linear detectors as used for grating spectrometers. The tunable optical interference filter is fabricated by a new porous silicon batch technology using only two photolithography steps. The refractive index of this filter microplate is gradually modulated

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is a powerful tool to manipulate cells and molecules in microfluidic chips. However, few practical applications using DEP exist. An immediate practical application of a carbon- electrode DEP system, in removing PCR inhibitors from a ...

The performance of a novel microfluidic impedance cytometer [1] for single-cell analysis is investigated in-silico by means of a finite element model. The main feature of the device is the ability to probe impedance of flowing cells along two orthogonal di ...

We propose a novel neural probe which combines microfluidic channels with recording and stimulation electrodes. The developed microfabrication approach enables the concentration of every active element such as electrodes and the sampling inlet in close pro ...

Zero-depth nanopores present a promising solution to the challenges associated with ultrathin membranes used in solid-state resistive pulse sensors for DNA sequencing. Most existing fabrication methods are either complex or lack the nanoscale precision required. In this study, we introduce a cost-effective approach that combines PDMS molding at the intersection of silicon micro-blades with an innovative high-resolution nano-positioning technique. These blades are created through photolithography and a two-s

A paradigm shift is taking place in medicine and dentistry from using synthetic implants and tissue grafts to a tissue engineering approach that uses degradable porous three-dimensional (3D) material hydrogels integrated with cells and bioactive factors to ...

A new concept for a 1 × 2 micromechanical optical switch with 10 μs of switching speed, 29 dB of ON/OFF ratio, and insertion loss of −7.22 dB for λ = 1550 nm and −4.96 dB for λ = 635 nm is presented. The idea is to insert a micromechanical switching mechan ...

There is great interest in highly sensitive separation methods capable of quickly isolating a particular cell type within a single manipulation step prior to their analysis. We present a cell sorting device based on the opposition of dielectrophoretic forc ...

The manipulation of living biological cells in microfluidic channels by a combination of negative dielectrophoretic barriers and pressure-driven flows is widely employed in lab-on-a-chip systems. However, electric fields in conducting media induce Joule he ...

PURPOSE. To present a novel and minimally invasive approach to intraocular pressure (IOP) monitoring based on a sensing contact lens. METHODS. The key element of this measurement method is a soft contact lens with an embedded microfabricated strain gauge a ...

Here, we demonstrate a new approach for the synthesis of ion exchange microfibers with finely tuned anhydrous conductivity. This work presents microfluidics as a system to control the size and phosphoric acid (PA) doping level of the polybenzimidazole (PBI ...

The fabrication, characterization and application of polyimide-based flexible microelectrodes for recording from and stimulation of biological tissue are described. The planar electrodes consist of a polyimide-platinum-polyimide sandwich structure with a t ...

The large majority of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are fabricated on silicon, glass or Pyrex substrates by manufacturing techniques, which originated from the semiconductors industry. However, their final application often requires removal of the ...

Micronanotechnology-based multielectrode ar- rays have led to remarkable progress in the field of transmembrane voltage recording of excitable cells. However, providing long-term optoporation- or electroporation-free intracellular access remains a consider ...

Several multi-electrode array devices integrating planar metal electrodes were designed in the past 30 years for extracellular stimulation and recording from cultured neuronal cells and organotypic brain slices. However, these devices are not well suited for recordings from acute brain slice preparations due to a dead cell layer at the tissue slice border that appears during the cutting procedure. To overcome this problem, we propose the use of protruding 3D electrodes, i.e. tip-shaped electrodes, allowing

Here we present an electrical lysis throughput of 600 microliters per minute at high cell density (108 yeast cells per ml) with 90% efficiency, thus improving the current common throughput of one microliter per minute. We also demonstrate the extraction of ...

This paper reports the new combination of cell sorting and counting capabilities on a single device. Most state-of-the-art devices combining these technologies use optical techniques requiring complicate experimental setups and labeled samples. The use of a label-free, electrical device significantly decreases the system complexity and makes it more appropriate for use in point-of-care diagnostics. Living and dead yeast cells are separated by dielectrophoretic forces and counted using coulter counters. The

The poor efficiency of microfluidic single cell trapping is currently restricting the full potential of state-of-the-art single cell analyses. Using fluid dynamics simulations in combination with particle image velocimetry to systematically optimize trap a ...
