The amount of visual feedback when using a mobile device in a busy context is often limited. For example, while texting and walking in a crowded place, we need to focus on the environment and not on the phone. A way to type fast, accurately and with limite ...

In this paper we present the motivation, design, development, and initial evaluation of a time awareness technology for meetings. As part of improving meetings effectiveness using technology, we focus on the meeting time management, and the method relies o ...

Research suggests that massive open online course (MOOC) students prefer to study in groups, and that social facilitation within the study groups may render the learning of difficult concepts a pleasing experience. We report on a longitudinal study that in ...

Teacher orchestration of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) processes plays a major role in students' outcomes, especially in face-to-face classrooms. However, few studies look into the fine-grained details of how such orchestration unfolds, the challenges ...

This paper describes TinkerSheets, a paper-based interface to tangible simulations. The proposed interface combines the advantages of form-based input and paper. Form-based input allows to set an arbitrary number of parameters. Using paper as a medium for ...

This study aims to explore the possibility of using machine learning techniques to build predictive models of performance in collaborative induction tasks. More specifically, we explored how signal-level data, like eye-gaze data and raw speech may be used ...

Paper interfaces offer tremendous possibilities for geometry education in primary schools. Existing computer interfaces designed to learn geometry do not consider the integration of conventional school tools, which form the part of the curriculum. Moreover ...

Exploring design space is an important process in finding solutions to a design task. In this paper, we present BloomGraph, an online application developed for florist apprentices to explore the space of bouquet designs. BloomGraph provides a graph-based i ...

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy of handwriting errors exhibited by children as a way to build adequate strategies for integration with a co-writing peer. The exploration includes the collection of letters written by children in an initial study, which ...

Augmented tabletops have recently attracted considerable attention in the literature. However, little has been known about the effects that these interfaces have on learning tasks. In this paper, we report on the results of an empirical study that explores ...

A key element for the success of any game is its ability to produce a different experience at each round, thus keeping the player engagement high. This is particularly important for those games that also have a serious objective, such as gamified rehabilit ...

Although positive effects of computer technologies to improve vocabulary learning have been widely reported, most of these technologies are designed specifically for individual learning, or disregard formal classroom learning. In this paper, we present the ...

The importance of space and place in collaborative practices has been strengthened with the ubiquitous computing paradigm, which aims at the integration of computation in physical objects and places. New location-based applications allow users to know wher ...

We describe FROG, an integrated environment for authoring and running collaborative learning scenarios, called Orchestration Graphs. We describe the pedagogical background and the technical architecture, and present a case study of a teacher using FROG to ...

Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) have drawn the interest of HCI and learning communities because of their potential positive impact on the learning experience. In this paper, we describe a preliminary study of a TUI ap- plication for training spatial skills ...

Improving educational practice through reflection is one important focus of teacher professional development approaches. However, such teacher reflection operates under practical classroom constraints that make it happen infrequently, including the relianc ...
