This paper presents the design of a novel and engaging collaborative learning activity for handwriting where a group of participants simultaneously tutor a Nao robot. This activity was intended to take advantage of both collaborative learning and the learn ...

We present the results of an eye-tracking study on a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) lecture showing the relation between gaze variables and students’ performance and learning strategy. 40 students watched a MOOC lecture while their eye-movements were be ...

Study groups are common approaches for students to study together at schools. However, little is known about how this approach is suited to MOOC based learning, where learners watch and discuss MOOC lecture videos in a collaborative manner. Watching MOOCs ...

This article presents a learning activity and its user study involving the Cellulo platform, a novel versatile robotic tool designed for education. In order to show the potential of Cellulo in the classroom as part of standard curricular activities, we des ...

Educational Robots are gaining popularity in classrooms but can increase the load on teachers compared to the use of more traditional technologies. Providing support to teachers can make teachers confident in including robots in their teaching routines. In ...

Massive online open courses' (MOOCs') students who use discussion forums have higher chances of finishing the course. However, little research has been conducted for understanding the underlying factors. One of the reasons which hinders the analysis is the ...

Mutual modelling, the reciprocal ability to establish a mental model of the other, plays a fundamental role in human interactions. This complex cognitive skill is however difficult to fully apprehend as it encompasses multiple neuronal, psychological and s ...

We designed BOOC, an application that synchronizes textbook content with MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) videos. The application leverages a tablet display split into two views to present lecture videos and textbook content simultaneously. The display o ...

We study the interaction of the participants in a pair program comprehension task across different time scales in a dual eye-tracking setup. We identify four layers of interaction episodes at different time scales. Each layer spans across the whole interac ...

We describe an interactive table designed for supporting face-to-face collaborative learning. The table, Reflect, addresses the issue of unbalanced participation during group discussions. By displaying on its surface a shared visualization of member partic ...

The social aspects of therapy and training are important for patients to avoid social isolation and must be considered when designing a platform, especially for home-based rehabilitation. We proposed an online version of the previously proposed tangible Pa ...

Human body-language is one of the richest and most obscure sources of information in inter-personal communication which we aim to re-introduce into the classroom’s ecosystem. In this paper we present our observations of student-to-student influence and mea ...

As concerns regarding sustainability and ethical responsibility in engineering practices continue to rise, it becomes imperative for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to equip future engineers with the necessary knowledge and skills to address these cha ...

In this paper we give a preview of our system for automatically evaluating attention in the classroom. We demonstrate our current behaviour metrics and preliminary observations on how they reflect the reactions of people to the given lecture. We also intro ...

We report an empirical study where we investigated the effects, on the collaborative outcomes and processes, of a cognition-related awareness tool providing learners with cues about their peer’s level of prior knowledge. Sixty-four university students part ...

In the context of MOOCs, “With-me-ness” refers to the extent to which the learner succeeds in following the teacher, specifically in terms of looking at the area in the video that the teacher is explaining. In our previous works, we employed eye-tracking m ...

This is an explanatory video that gives a short overview of the CoWriting Kazakh project(1) that aims to implement an autonomous behavior of a social robot that would assist and motivate children in learning a new script and its associated handwriting. The ...

The present invention according to one embodiment concerns a computer-implemented method of analysing handwritten characters produced by a user. The method comprises: collecting (107) handwritten characters of the user, the user being part of a given user ...
