The orchestration process consists of managing classroom interactions at multiple levels: individual activities, teamwork and class-wide sessions. We study the process of orchestration in recitation sections, i.e. when students work on their assignments in ...

The AI-driven Fourth Industrial Revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic have one important thing in common: they both have caused significant and rapid changes to the skill set landscape of various industries. These disruptive forces mean that the early ident ...

We report the design and testing of TapaCarp, a CSCL environment for carpenter apprentices. From the start, we designed TapaCarp for a classroom usage. This led to an interface distributed over several components and modalities. A first user study conducte ...

Activating student knowledge (ASK) before receiving learning materials improves their learning outcome (Tormey and LeDuc (2014)). We implement ASK through priming by using two versions of the same pretest in a dual eye-tracking study in a MOOC context. We ...

Massive online open courses’ (MOOCs’) students who use discussion forums have higher chances of finishing the course. However, little research has been conducted for understanding the underlying fac- tors. One of the reasons which hinders the analysis is t ...

Research in education has long established how children mutually influence and support each other's learning trajectories, eventually leading to the development and widespread use of learning methods based on peer activities. In order to explore children's ...

Multiple loci of control is one of the main affordances of tangible tabletop UIs due to their capability for simultaneous manipulation. However, there is a tension between the efficiency given by simultaneous manipulation and the need to coordinate and ref ...

Social robots are being used to create better educationalscenarios, boosting children’s motivation and engagement. The focus of the research is to explore new ways to supportchildren in acquisition of their handwriting skills with thehelp of a social robot. ...

Large-scale experiments are often expensive and time consuming. Although Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) provide a solid and consistent framework for learning analytics, MOOC practitioners are still reluctant to risk resources in experiments. In this s ...

In this paper, we present a response to the Interest-Driven Creator (IDC) Theory from a European perspective. Specifically, we raise six questions intended to start a dialogue with respect to IDC Theory’s placement in existing learning theories, its adopti ...

In this paper we seek to empirically study the use of location-awareness of others in the context of mobile collaboration. We report on a field experiment carried out using a pervasive game we developed called CatchBob!. Using both quantitative and qualita ...

Inductive reasoning is an important educational practice but can be difficult for teachers to support in the classroom due to the high level of preparation and classroom time needed to choose the teaching materials that challenge students' current views. I ...

We present an eye-tracking study in the context of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) videos. We propose to use a pre-test as a way of priming students about the video content before they watch the video. In this study, we used two versions of the same pre- ...

Persuasive social robots employ their social influence to modulate children's behaviours in child-robot interaction. In this work, we introduce the Child-Robot Relational Norm Intervention (CRNI) model, leveraging the passive role of social robots and chil ...

Bringing robots into classrooms presents a new set of challenges for classroom management and teacher support compared to traditional technology-enhanced learning and has been left almost unexplored by the research community. In this paper, we present the ...

"Teaching analytics" is the application of learning analytics techniques to understand teaching and learning processes, and eventually enable supportive interventions. However, in the case of (often, half-improvised) teaching in face-to-face classrooms, su ...

We present an automatic method for trend detection in job ads. From a job-posting website, we collect job ads from 16 countries and in 8 languages and 6 job domains. We pre-process them by removing stop words, lemmatising and performing cross-domain filter ...

The Robots for Learning workshop series aims at advancing the research topics related to the use of social robots in educational contexts. The full-day workshop follows on previous events in Human-Robot Interaction conferences focusing on efforts to design ...
