This paper reports on an electrical lysis device integrating multiple-frequency impedance measurements for automated evaluation of the lysis efficiency and counting of the lysed cells. Conventional techniques use chemical reagents to dissolve the cell memb ...

NOVELTY - The device has a carrier (1) which is provided with micro-cavity (2) for containing medium in direct contact with the object on which the medium is to be applied. Other carrier is provided with ring to protect the medium from environment when the ...

The experimental and numerical investigation presented by Bertsch et al. (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 5, 2020a, p. 054202) describes the self-sustained oscillations induced by the interaction of two impinging jets in microfluidic devices. While the oscillatory ...

A 14-MHz in-plane nanoelectromechanical resonator based on a resonant-suspended-gate (RSG) MOSFET principle and integrated in a front-end process is demonstrated. The devices are in-plane flexural vibration mode beams (L = 10 mum, w = 165 nm, and h = 400 n ...

Suspended nanochannel resonators (SNRs) are promising devices able to characterize mass down to the attogram scale, thus being able to detect nanoparticles or biomolecules. In this paper, we present a flexible fabrication process for SNRs based on a sacrif ...

Microstereolithography is a technique that allows the manufacture of small and complex three-dimensional (3D) components in plastic material. Many of the components produced by this technique are too small and too complex to be replicated by molding and, consequently, the produced components need to have adequate mechanical or chemical characteristics to be useful. Until now, the choice of materials available in the microstereolithography process was limited to plastic, with only a few photosensitive resins

In this article the authors present techniques which allow the microfluidic design of alginate microgels with layer composition on a chip. The hydrogel is created by combining two laminar flows of the gel precursor solutions-a calcium solution and an algin ...

This paper presents the study of a novel scintillation detector based on standard microfabrication techniques. It consists of a fine pitch array of hollow waveguides filled with a liquid scintillator and optically coupled to photodetectors. The detector has been fabricated by patterning the SU-8 photoresist on silicon wafers. Experimental studies have been performed by exciting the liquid scintillator contained in the SU-8 waveguides with electrons. The scintillation light produced was read out by an extern

Impedance spectroscopy is a powerful tool for label-free analysis and characterisation of living cells. In this work, we achieved the detection of Babesia bovis infected red blood cells using impedance spectroscopy on a microfabricated flow cytometer. The ...

In vitro studies of Alzheimer’s disease are based on homogenously seeded neural cells. These studies reveal molecular pathway mechanism related to neurite degeneration, but they cannot analyze interactions between diseased and healthy cells. Furthermore, t ...

The use of solvent-free microfluidics to fine-tune the physical and chemical properties of chitosan nanoparticles for drug delivery is demonstrated. Nanoparticle self-assembly is driven by pH changes in a water environment, which increases biocompatibility ...

Many chem. reactions, like the dehydrogenation of gaseous methanol to formaldehyde, require fast heating and cooling of the gases to control precisely the residence time at the reaction temp. (on the order of hundreds of ms) to minimize consecutive reactions. For these applications, microsystems are of great interest thanks to their characteristic high surface- to-vol. ratio and low thermal inertia. Heater and cooler units were developed with compatible micromachining technologies in view of a future integr

We present a microspectrometer based on a tunable interference filter for infrared or visible light that scans the desired part of the spectrum within milliseconds. A single pixel detector measures serially the intensity at selected wavelengths. This conce ...

We have examined the properties of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in embryonic chick retinal ganglion cells. Ganglion cells, identified according to morphological and physiological criteria, displayed spontaneous or induced action potentials. In 94/99 cells acetylcholine pulses evoked responses. In current clamp mode, acetylcholine provoked membrane depolarization and triggered action potentials. Under voltage clamp conditions, acetylcholine evoked inward currents that were readily blocked by d-tubocurar

High-aspect-ratio nanostructures can improve intracellular delivery through nanopores and enhance electrophysiological recordings by strengthening the physical coupling between cells and underlying micro/nanostructures. However, key properties of this cell–nanostructure interface, especially the seal resistance, remain poorly quantified. Here, we report a wafer-scale “nano-volcano” platform with integrated sub-micropores (800 nm diameter) and 100 nm-thick walls. The device supports cell culture, enables int

In nanometer-sized apertures with charged surfaces, the extension of the electrical double layer results in the electrostatic exclusion of co-ions and enrichment in counterions, which affects the permselectivity of such structures. A modeling of this pheno ...

A method for fabricating a micromirror in a wafer, including the steps of: depositing and etching layers forming two arms; etching the wafer such that in the back face only a thin portion of the wafer remains in the region of formation of the micromirror a ...

This paper reports on the modeling and key design aspects of an innovative MEMS device: the suspended-gate MOSFET (SG-MOSFET). Based on the coupled-electromechanical equations describing the suspended gate actuation, we present the investigation of the pull-in voltages and of the capacitance switching and tuning ranges for RF applications. A quasi-analytical model and is developed for the gate-to-substrate capacitance of the SG-MOSFET and then, validated by numerical simulation. A SPICE macro-model using po

A novel scintillation detector is being developed with standard microfabrication techniques. It consists of a dense array of scintillating waveguides obtained by filling microfluidic channels with an organic liquid scintillator. Such a microfluidic device ...

Neuronal cell culture models in vitro are often restricted to 2D surfaces. Engineering the complexity of the neuronal microenvironment in microfluidic systems can help to generate more tissue like cultures. We have developed a new neuronal cell culturing s ...
