The diversity of road applications and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) makes the definition of positioning integrity a real challenge because the requirements are changing from one application to another. Even within liability or safety critical applications, the role of positioning may vary if the application layer requires a position at specific location (e.g. emergency call) or a series of positions along a vehicle’s trajectory (e.g. transport of dangerous goods). -- This paper is focusing on th

Context of indoor navigation The objective of this research is to define and to implement a dedicated data model for indoor applications. Based on this specific model, route guidance and navigation algorithms can be integrated in order to develop applications with particular requirements. 2. Geodata modelling and algorithms for navigation In this paper, we present the development and the implementation of algorithms to access map databases by a user equipped with a pedestrian navigation system. The first

Retrieving the water-leaving reflectance from airborne hyperspectral data implies to deal with three steps. Firstly, the radiance recorded by an airborne sensor comes from several sources: the real radiance of the object, the atmospheric scattering, sky an ...

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) has successfully integrated the Bologna reform process that standardizes the Bachelor and Master programmes across Europe. This reform particularly affects the curriculum offered by the EPFL scho ...

Navigation is usually associated with marine and aviation domains. Except for some lighthouses for orientation or landmarks near the coast, navigation instruments are essential because routes are virtual. Therefore, current position of ships and aircrafts must be drawn on the map. Land navigation is generally bound to the road infrastructure. Car navigation systems have been introduced to replace the use of road maps in order to assist the driver in the choise of the correct way...

Integrating visual and inertial sensors has become a common practice in navigation due to the increase in computer power, in algorithms advancement and in sensor improvements. One of the problems yet to be solved is the Simultaneous Localisation And Mappin ...

When satellite are available, the localisation of a pedestrian is fairly straightforward. However in cities or indoors, dead reckoning systems are necessary to determine the user's position. Our current research focuses on the development of algorithms and hardware for pedestrian navigation in both post-processing and real-time modes.

Traffic problems have mainly resulted from an increase in mobility over the last decades involving an increase in traffic congestion and degradation of environmental conditions. The employment of new systems - namely, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is ...

Thanks to its physical characteristics, Ultra-wideband (UWB) is one of the most promising technologies for indoor pedestrian navigation. UWB radio localisation systems however experience multipath phenomena that decrease the precision and the reliability o ...

When Massive Open Online Courses became a hot topic in Europe. The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) decided to take the challenge and launched an internal call for proposals. At the Geodetic Engineering Lab, we saw a possibility to use contact hours for exercises and fieldwork, rather than telling stories and showing diagrams. External students were considered, but the main purpose was to modernise the first year course "Fundamentals of Geomatics" for approximately 250 civil and environmental

The estimation of reflectance from hyperspectral data, a process called atmospheric correction, is a critical first step. Most of the methods need measurements of ground reflectances or atmosphere. When no information is available, unsupervised methods as Quick Atmospheric Correction (QUAC) exist assuming a large variability on the scene. But when studies on specific materials are conducted, no such large variability occurs. To solve the atmospheric correction in that case, we propose a new atmospheric corr

In this paper the perturbation influence properties of the stochastic model (variance-covariance) in linear models is discussed in detail. Some very useful formulae are established about the variance-covariance perturbation influence on the model parameter estimation. Then, the influence properties are analyzed in different cases and illustrated by two examples.

As demand increases for positioning rescue crews, military users, and individuals with special needs, miniaturized low-power inertial measurement units (IMUs) coupled with GPS receivers and other sensors can provide accurate position in both indoor and outdoor situations.

Over the last few years, research had been conducted on how to develop basic mobility aid for visually impaired and blind people using vision and image processing techniques. However, our research at Geodetic Engineering Laboratory has taken a different view to this problem.

This paper presents a cell-based approach for computing the deformation of a monitored object by analyzing point cloud data from terrestrial lidar. This approach can automatically generate an informative deformation description (called "deformation map") w ...

In this paper, a GPS-independent mobile navigation and mapping system is introduced. This system employs the photogrammetric intersection to determine the coordinates of the surrounding objects and then it uses these newly known objects to compute its own position, when it moves, by the photogrammetric resection.

The applications to dynamic sports for an accurate analysis of trajectories represent a new perspective for carrier phase-based GPS positioning. Introduced in competitive skiing, the GPS technique provide all the qualitative data for a complete analysis of position/velocity/acceleration so that the measured trajectories can be compared throughout the entire track.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) has introduced the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) in 2005. Since then, the number of teachers and users has increased rapidly. With more than 350 active courses hosted on Moodle for this ...

Existing indoor navigation solutions usually rely on pre-installed sensor networks, whereas emergency agents are interested in fully auto-deployable systems. In this paper, an almost self-deployable solution based on Radio-frequency identification tags and ...
