Nowadays, students bring their full ecosystem of social media platforms and their own devices to school, while teachers benefit from and contribute to local or global repositories of educational resources. As a consequence, educational institutions have to ...

Over the past decade, social computing has emerged immensely as a phenomenon among distributed communities. The benefits of social systems depend on a large part on the existence of an active user community who use it continuously to deploy and share infor ...

This paper presents the approach taken to give engineering students the necessary competencies and facilities to implement real-time control solutions. This goal is achieved first by way of an introduction to the basic principles underlying real-time control. Then, by motivating the use of personal computers as a versatile alternative to more traditional implementation equipment. Finally, by combining LabVIEW and DAQ boards to form an integrated framework for fast prototyping of real-time control solutions.

Humanitarian organisations provide invaluable work to improve the lives of individuals impacted by natural and anthropogenic hazards. While humanitarian organisations are highly knowledge intensive, they often fail to manage knowledge effectively. Providin ...

The paper presents a novel approach to conduct laboratory experiments in relation with the Control class taught at EPFL. The existing laboratory interface built as a Java applet, which allows students to access experimentation devices locally or remotely, ...

A new dynamical model of the shoulder has been developed. It consists of eleven muscles. The glenohumeral joint, modeled as a spherical joint, allows three rotations and blocks the translations. Muscle wrapping around a spherical humeral head is calculated ...

Establishing trust is an important aspect of the design of technological tools for mental health, as individuals are persuaded to disclose personal distressing experiences when privacy is ensured. This work-in-progress paper presents an interdisciplinary r ...

A new nonlinear model is proposed for describing the rela-tionship between the relevant inputs and outputs of a DC-magnetron sputtering system used in a manufacturing line for digital-compact discs and analogous optical data-storage devices. It is shown that the process is inherently discrete, and that it has an inherent transport delay. A control scheme is proposed consisting of a Smith predictor to address the delayed dynamics, and a globally linearizing operator is introduced to address the nonlinear nat

Designing and implementing online or digital learning material is a demanding task for teachers. This is even more the case when this material is used for more engaged forms of learning, such as inquiry learning. In this article, we give an informed accoun ...

A double-stage feedback control structure for a double-stage mechanical system, with a single optical metrology is developed to reach the nanometer accuracy at high bandwidth over large displacements. A piezoelectric stack actuator is used for fine positio ...

This paper focuses on Engineering Education Research on Technology Enhanced Learning carried out at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), and on its current focus on personal and collaborative learning. After some thoughts on the di ...

This study aims to examine the future of computer science programs in higher education in North Africa in the age of AI. The main objective is to identify expectations of students enrolled in a bachelor program in computer systems development regarding curriculum reform, with a focus on the professions of tomorrow. Through a survey, 170 responses were collected from final-year bachelor students in Tunisia regarding the changes they would make to their program if they were responsible for their university ed

As computational thinking (CT) becomes increasingly acknowledged as an important skill in education, self-directed learning (SDL) emerges as a key strategy for developing this capability. The advent of generative AI (GenAI) conversational agents has disrup ...

This paper proposes a novel approach to build and deploy learning analytics dashboards in multiple learning environments. Existing learning dashboards are barely portable: once deployed on a learning platform, it requires considerable effort to deploy the ...

The consequence of the loss of involutivity of a specific set of vector fields on the periodicity of the joint motion is examined for redundant robots. An output task, defined as a one dimensional periodic closed curve embedded in a two dimensional working ...

One of the challenges with autonomous vehicles is their performance at intersections. An alternative control method for the coordination of autonomous vehicles at intersections is shown. The proposed approach was grounded in multiple-robot coordination and ...

Sexual harassment is prevalent at all levels of higher education and research and in all disciplines, which means that engineering education is no exception. Following the #MeToo movement, students have started to report cases of abuses publicly in our ins ...

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming a significant field of research with numerous applications, ranging from mapping to surveillance. New applications, such as aerial delivery of goods, are expected to appear in the next years and will require mor ...

This paper aims to propose an implementation framework for the adoption and management of Open Educational Resources (OER), focusing on their lifecycle, as well as the integration of AI for supporting educators in their classification of the created conten ...

Some of the next generation massive spectroscopic survey projects, plan to use thousands of fiber positioner robots packed at a focal plane to quickly move in parallel the fiber-ends from the previous to the next target points. The most direct trajectories ...
