The identification of kinetic models can be simplified via the computation of extents of reaction on the basis of invariants such as stoichiometric balances. With extents, one can identify the structure and the parameters of reaction rates individually, wh ...

This paper deals with input adaptation in dynamic processes in order to guarantee feasible and optimal operation despite the presence of uncertainty. The proposed adaptation consists in using the nominal optimal inputs and adding appropriately designed inp ...

A numerical sufficiency test for the asymptotic stability of linear time-varying Hurwitz systems is proposed. The algorithmic procedure constructs a bounding tube in which the state is guaranteed to stay. The continuous-time system is evaluated at discrete ...

Improvement over classical dynamic feedback linearization for a unicycle mobile robots is proposed. Compared to classical extension, the technique uses a higher-dimensional state extension, which allows rejecting a constant disturbance on the robot rotatio ...

Solving a multi-input dynamic optimization of a batch processes is a complex problem involving interactions between input variables and constraints over time. The problem gets more difficult due to the presence of local solutions that have almost the same ...

This paper proposes a feedback law capable of swinging up and stabilizing the cartpendulum system. The approach uses an iterative algorithm that is typically used to construct a locally linearizing output for nonlinear control-affine systems. However, rath ...

The feasibility of using chemometric techniques for the automatic detection of whether a rabbit kidney is pathological or not is studied. Sequential images of the kidney are acquired using Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging with contrast ...

This paper investigates the problem of load-sharing optimization of gas compressors in the presence of uncertainty. The objective is to operate a set of compressor units in an energy-efficient way, while at the same time meeting a varying load demand. The ...

Target factor analysis (TFA) has been used successfully with reaction data to determine, without knowledge of reaction kinetics, the number of independent reactions and the corresponding stoichiometries. This paper analyzes the applicability of TFA techniques to reaction data on the basis of concentration measurements. It is shown that, in some cases, a data matrix that is well suited to existing TFA techniques can be constructed from concentration measurements, material exchange terms, and initial conditio

The problem of swinging up an inverted pendulum on a cart and controlling it around the upright position has traditionally been treated as two separate problems. This paper proposes a control strategy that is globally asymptotically stable under actuator s ...

OPTIMIZATION OF A SEMI-BATCH REACTION SYSTEM UNDER SAFETY CONSTRAINTS O. Ubrich+, B. Srinivasan*, F. Stoessel+, D. Bonvin* * Novartis Services AG, CH-4002 Basel, Switzerland Institut d’ utomatique, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne A CH-1015, Lausanne, Switzerland * Fax: +41 21 693 2574 and e-mail: dominique.bonvin@epfl.ch + An important objective in the chemical industry is to find the operating conditions that maximize profit while ensuring safe operation. The safety considerations arise from the e

The steady-state performance of a parametrically or structurally uncertain system can be optimized using iterative real-time optimization methods such as modifier adaptation. Here, we extend a recently proposed second-order modifier-adaptation scheme in tw ...

The steady advance of computational methods makes model-based optimization an increasingly attractive method for process improvement. Unfortunately, the available models are often inaccurate. An iterative optimization method called "modifier adaptation" ov ...

On-line control and optimization can improve the efficiency of fuel cell systems whilst simultaneously ensuring that the operation remains within a safe region. Also, fuel cells are subject to frequent variations in their power demand. This paper investigate ...

For the investigation of complex reaction systems, it has been proposed to decouple the various rate processes using a linear time-invariant transformation that is constructed from knowledge of stoichiometry, reaction enthalpies, inlet compositions and tem ...

In fluidized-bed gas-phase polymerization reactors, several grades of polyethylene are produced in the same equipment by changing the operating conditions. Transitions between the different grades are rather slow and result in the production of a considera ...

This paper extends the quotient method proposed in [1] and applies it to stabilize a “ball-on-a-wheel” system. The quotient method requires a diffeomorphism to obtain the normal form of the input vector field and uses canonical pro- jection to obtain the q ...

Real-time optimization (RTO) methods use measurements to offset the effect of uncertainty and drive the plant to optimality. RTO schemes differ in the way measurements are incorporated in the optimization framework. Explicit RTO schemes solve a static opti ...

In the context of static real-time optimization (RTO) of uncertain plants, the standard modifier-adaptation scheme consists in adding first-order correction terms to the cost and constraint functions of a model based optimization problem. If the algorithm ...

Modeling chemical reaction systems is an important but complex task. The identified kinetic model must be able to explain all the underlying rate processes such as chemical reactions and heat and mass transfers. Traditionally, the modeling task is carried ...
