Engineering of fetal tissue has a high potential for the treatment of acute and chronic wounds of the skin in humans as these cells have high expansion capacity under simple culture conditions and one organ donation can produce Master Cell Banks which can ...

Micromotion-induced interstitial fluid flow at the bone-implant interface has been proposed to play an important role in aseptic loosening of cementless implants. High fluid velocities are thought to promote aseptic loosening through activation of osteocla ...

The fixation of an orthopedic implant depends strongly upon its initial stability. Peri-implant bone may resorb shortly after the surgery. This resorbtion is directly followed by new bone formation and implants fixation strengthening, the so-called seconda ...

A vast majority of the available biomechanical models of the human shoulder has been developed based on inverse dynamics, e.g. [1,2]. This imposes a number of limitations on their application. For instance, the glenohumeral joint is approximated as an idea ...

Fetal bone cells were shown to have an interesting potential for therapeutic use in bone tissue engineering due to their rapid growth rate and their ability to differentiate into mature osteoblasts in vitro. We describe hereafter their capability to promot ...

Tissue decellularisation has gained much attention in regenerative medicine as an alternative to synthetic materials. In decellularised tissues, biological cues can be maintained and provide cellular environments still unmet by synthetic materials. Supercr ...

During the last decade, extensive research has been performed in the field of orthopedic medicine to develop cell-based therapies for the restoration of injured bone tissue. We previously demonstrated that human primary fetal bone cells (HFBCs) associated ...

Cartilage degeneration, typically viewed as an irreversible, vicious cycle, sees a significant reduction in two essential biophysical cues: the well-established hydrostatic pressure (HP) and the recently discovered transient temperature increase. Our study ...

To improve implant biocompatibility, we developed a simple cost-effective thermal surface treatment allowing an increase in the oxide layer thickness of a titanium (Ti) alloy used in orthopaedic implants. The goal of this study was to test in vitro the reaction of osteoblasts to the developed surface treatment and to compare it to the osteoblast reaction to two other surface treatments currently used in the practice of implant surgery. Quantification of osteoblast gene expression on a large scale was used i

Estimation of muscle forces in over-actuated musculoskeletal models involves optimal distributions of net joint moments among muscles by a standard load-sharing scheme (SLS). Given that co-contractions of antagonistic muscles are counterproductive in the n ...

We envision the use of human fetal bone cells for engineered regeneration of adult skeletal tissue. A description of their cellular function is then necessary. To our knowledge, there is no description of human primary fetal bone cells treated with differentiation factors. The characterization of fetal bone cells is particularly important as the pattern of secreted proteins from osteoblasts has been shown to change during aging. In the first part of this work, human primary fetal bone cells were compared to

Previous studies support resorbable biocomposites made of poly L-lactic acid (PLA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) produced by supercritical gas foaming as a suitable scaffold for tissue engineering. The present study was undertaken to demonstrate the bio ...

The purpose of the present work was to examine the effect of different Ti-6Al-4V surface treatments on osteoblasts behaviour. Previous work in this laboratory has demonstrated that an ageing treatment reduces metal ion release from this alloy compared to standard passivation procedures. In this study. human osteosarcoma MG-63 were used in short-term in vitro tests to assay for cell viability and cell proliferation at 12, 24 and 72 h while SaOS-2 were used in long-term in vitro tests to assay for osteonectin

Several studies have reported an increase of temperature in cartilage submitted to cyclic sinusoidal loading. The temperature increase is in part due to the viscous behavior of this tissue, which partially dissipates the input mechanical energy into heat. ...

Bone is a complex porous composite structure with specific characteristics such as viscoelasticity and anisotropy, both in morphology and mechanical properties. Bone defects are regularly filled with artificial tissue grafts, which should ideally have prop ...

Chronic and acute tendon injuries are frequent afflictions, for which treatment is often long and unsatisfactory. When facing extended injuries, matrices and scaffolds with sufficient biomechanical properties are required for surgical repair and could addi ...

Secure attachment of repair constructs to native cartilage and underlying bone tissues remains a major unmet need in chondral and osteochondral surgery. Currently existing injectable or scaffold-based cell carriers, while biologically compatible, lack the mechanical integrity and interfacial adhesion. In most cases, a secondary fixation using suturing or fibrin glue remains necessary, which can be challenging in terms of achieving long-term integration and reproducible clinical outcomes. Here, we investigat

Cellular thermoplastic structures with multiscale porosity (1–300 µm microporosity to 0.3–10 mm macroporosity) are produced from an integrated approach of 3D printing by Fused Deposition Modeling printing and Supercritical CO2 Foaming. Porous strands and r ...

The common approach to assess the stabilizing role of the ACL in the knee has been to measure the elongation of a few marked fibers in the ligament. A comparison of the relative elongation (RE) of these marked fibers between different specimens and studies is delicate due to the difficulty of marking the same fibers. More consistent comparisons would be achieved if the RE of the whole ligament surface was presented. Hence, we developed a mathematical method leading to a continuous description of the relativ

Attaching hydrogels to soft internal tissues is crucial for the development of various biomedical devices. Tough sticky hydrogel patches present high adhesion, yet with lack of injectability and the need for treatment of contacting surface. On the contrary ...
