Phosphate glass (PG) of the composition 0.46(CaO)-0.04(Na(2)O)- 0.5(P(2)O(5)) was used as filler in poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) foams developed as degradable scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. The effect of PG on PLA was assessed both in bulk and porous c ...

Intracranial aneurysms are increasingly being treated with endovascular therapy, namely coil embolization. Despite being minimally invasive, partial occlusion and recurrence are more frequent compared to open surgical clipping. Therefore, an alternative tr ...

Background and Objective: While there is a reported correlation between shoulder condition and scapular morphology, the precise impact of typical anatomical variables remains a subject of ongoing debate. This study aimed to evaluate this causal association ...

We describe herein some immunological properties of human fetal bone cells recently tested for bone tissue engineering applications. Adult mesenchymal stem cells and adult osteoblasts were included in the study for comparison. Surface markers involved in b ...

Background - Nucleus pulposus degeneration is a very common musculo-skeletal pathology, which is in part responsible for low back pain, a pandemic medical problem. Artificial hydrogels are being investigated by research group around the world for the purpose of replacing the damaged tissue and thus contributing to a healing solution for low back pain. In collaboration between the LTC and the LBO, a composite reinforced hydrogel has been developed with mechanical and swelling characteristics well suited for

Wear of polyethylene is associated with aseptic loosening of orthopaedic implants and has been observed in hip and knee prostheses and anatomical implants for the shoulder. The reversed shoulder prostheses have not been assessed as yet. We investigated the ...

Photopolymerization is a common tool to harden materials initially in a liquid state. A surgeon can directly trigger the solidification of a dental implant or a bone or tissue filler simply by illumination. Traditionally, photopolymerization has been used ...

Calcium phosphate cements (CPC) are increasingly used in the orthopedic field. This kind of cement has potential applications in bone defect replacements, osteosynthetic screw reinforcements or drug delivery. In vivo studies have demonstrated a good osteointegration of CPC. However, it was also observed that the resorption of CPC could create particles. It is known from orthopedic implant studies that particles can be responsible for the peri-implant osteolysis. Biocompatibility assessment of CPC should the

Photopolymerization is a common tool to harden materials initially in a liquid state. A surgeon can directly trigger the solidification of a dental implant or a bone or tissue filler. Traditionally, photopolymerization has been used mainly in dentistry. Ov ...

Current homogenized finite element (hFE) models of the patella lack a validated material law and mostly overlook trabecular anisotropy. The objective of this study was to identify the elastic constants of patellar trabecular bone. Using mu CT scans of 20 f ...

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is one of the prevailing medical concern and actual health cost. Industries and academic institutions research for therapeutic solutions going from drugs to complete and partial arthroplasty devices as well as engineered tissues. Most research focus on the nucleus pulposus (NP) of the IVD because it is believed that, in the degeneration process, the NP is the scene of the first (irreversible) biochemical and mechanical changes. Mechanical, biochemical, nutritional and

Total joint replacements are highly successful in relieving pain and restoring movement of damaged joints. However, the lifespan of the implants is limited. The implant’s long-term stability depends largely on the preservation of periprosthetic bone. Debri ...

Bone defects in revision knee arthroplasty (RKA) are often located in load-bearing regions. The goal of this study was to determine if a physiologic load could be used as an in situ osteogenic signal to the scaffolds filling the bone defects. In order to a ...

Rotator cuff tear is one of the most common types of shoulder injuries, often resulting in pain and physical debilitation. Allogeneic tendon-derived decellularized matrices do not have appropriate pore size and porosity to facilitate cell infiltration, whi ...

The hypothesis of variables separation, namely the time and the strain separation in the relaxation function, is widely used in soft tissue biomechanics. Although this hypothesis is central to several biomechanical models, only few experimental works have tried to verify it. From these studies, contradictory results have been found. Moreover, it has recently been noted that no such experimental verification has been performed for ligament tissues. In this paper, an experimental method is developed to test t

Although we need to continue our efforts in basic sciences and research for the discovery of fundamental knowledge, we also need to focus on how this knowledge can improve human health. Often, it is not a single view or approach that will lead to discoveries, but rather the interface of disciplines that combine multiple fields of knowledge such as engineering, biology and medicine. An interdisciplinary approach, allowing for a new way of thinking, can benefit the future of human health and enable new therap

The goal of this study was to investigate if the preparation of implantation site has an impact on bone formation inside tissue engineering scaffolds. For this purpose, two different drilling techniques were used to create a hole in distal femurs of rats b ...

To illuminate the effect of titanium particles on osteoblast function, we compared the adhesion force of neonatal rat calvarial osteoblasts on fibronectin-coated glass after incubation with titanium particles (80% had diameters of less than 5 microm). The cells were incubated with the particles for 1.5-72 hours. Using a micropipette single-cell manipulation system, we showed that the adhesion force of the osteoblasts to fibronectin-coated glass (1.0 microg/ml) was significantly affected by the presence of p

Background: The effect of shoulder pathologies on glenoid bone mineral density (BMD) remains unclear and can be critical in surgical treatments. It is thus useful to predict this effect and understand how it is influenced by sex, age, and body mass index (BMI), in various glenoid locations. Methods: To address this question, we developed a causal model and used do-calculus to identify the minimal adjustment set of covariate variables and developed a varying-intercept varying-slope Bayesian model. We consid

Current surgical management of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture still remains an intractable challenge in ACL regeneration due to the weak self-healing capability of ACL. Inadequate cell numbers and vascularization within the articular cavity contr ...
