Shapes incorporate geometry as well as semantics and can be defined in 2D, 3D or higher dimensions. Geometric models can be structured in such a way that they can provide a relevant framework to insert semantic information or view dependent information abo ...

We present a system that exploits advanced Virtual Reality technologies to create a surveillance and security system. Surveillance cameras are carried by a mini Blimp which is tele-operated using an innovative Virtual Reality interface with haptic feedback ...

Despite the wide amount of computer graphics frameworks and solutions available, it is still difficult to find a perfect one fitting at the same time many constraints, like pedagogical intents and user-friendliness or speed with high rendering quality and ...

We present a system that exploits advanced Mixed and Virtual Reality technologies to create a surveillance and security system that could be also extended to define emergency prevention plans in crowdy environments. Surveillance cameras are carried by a mi ...

Instead of the reality in which you can see your own limbs, in virtual reality simulations it is sometimes disturbing not to be able to see your own body. It seems to create an issue in the proprioperception of the user who does not completely feel integra ...

In this paper we present an object representation based on the semantics and functionality of interactive digital items - virtual objects - within a virtual environment (VE). We consider every object participating in a VE application not only as a 3D shape ...

This paper presents the “caddie paradigm” a new interface for teleoperation of mobile robots. We present a prototype based on the use of a treadmill as a free-locomotion interface. The “caddie paradigm” allows for controlling a real robot by “pushing” its ...

Our experience with a Haptic Workstation™ has shown that this device is uncomfortable to use during long sessions. The main reason is the uncomfortable posture of the arms, which must be kept outstretched horizontally while supporting the weight of an exos ...

Augmented reality (AR) environments are suffering from a limited workspace. In addition, registration issues are also increased by the use of a mobile camera on the user that provides a first-person perspective (1PP). Using several fixed cameras reduces th ...

The use of inhabited Virtual Environments is continuously growing. People can embody a human-like avatar to participate inside these Virtual Environments or they can have personalized character acting as mediator; sometimes they can even customize it to so ...

This paper develops the concept of mediators: virtual interfaces with haptic feedback for teleoperation. Our approach is to replace physical operator interfaces by fully parameterizable adaptive virtual interfaces. Mediators open new possibilities for mult ...

We have designed a mobile -PDA-based- interface for real-time control of virtual characters in multiuser semi-immersive virtual environments - using a large rear-projection screen. The proof-of-concept implementation we present shows the potential of handh ...

The virtual orchestra is a multimodal system architecture based on complex 3D sound environment processing and a compact user interface. The system architecture supports high-performance sound content for VR (virtual reality) applications, and the user con ...

This paper presents a new library called MHaptic for bimanual haptic interaction within generic virtual environments. It has been specifically designed to work with a Haptic Workstation. MHaptic provides tools for accelerated development of virtual environ ...

This paper presents an evaluation of the benefits and user acceptance of a multimodal interface in which the user interacts with a game-like interactive virtual reality application "The Enigma of the Sphinx". The interface consists of a large projection sc ...

In this paper , we present a VR-based first-person view paradigm applied to a tele-surveillance application. Using an Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV), we have developed an intuitive tangible interface between the pilot and his airship (blimp). The idea is to ma ...

We aim to create a model of emotional reactive virtual humans. This model will help to define realistic behavior for virtual characters based on emotions and events in the virtual environment to which they react. A large set of pre-recorded animations will ...

Most of the efforts concerning graphical representations of humans (Virtual Humans) have been focused on synthesizing geometry for static or animated shapes. The next step is to consider a human body not only as a 3D shape, but as an active semantic entity ...

This paper presents a sketching system for 3D organic shapes modeling and animation using virtual reality devices. On the hardware side, it is based on the Haptic Workstation™ which conveys force feedback on the user arms (upper body limbs), and a head mou ...

In this paper, we present a telerehabilitation system aiming to help the physiotherapists for the shoulder and elbow treatment. It is based on a two-arm haptic force feedback to avoid excessive efforts and discomfort with the spinal column. This system, re ...
