Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is one of the recommended techniques for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status assessment on cancer tissues. Here we develop microfluidics-assisted FISH (MA-FISH), in which hybridization of the FIS ...

We have developed a cheap and simple trilayer printed circuit board (PCB)-based technology, adapted for the fabrication of fluxgate magnetic sensors. The two outer layers of the PCB stack comprise the electrical windings of the fluxgate, while the inner layer is made of patterned amorphous magnetic core with extremely high relative magnetic permeability (µr100,000). The output voltage and the sensitivity of the fluxgate devices have been studied as a function of the external field and of the geometry of the

The design and operation of ITER experimental fusion reactor requires the development of neutron measurement techniques and numerical tools to derive the fusion power and the radiation field in the device and in the surrounding areas. Nuclear analyses prov ...

The total emission of radiation is a crucial quantity to calculate the power balances and to understand the physics of any Tokamak. Bolometric systems are the main tool to measure this important physical quantity through quite sophisticated tomographic inv ...

We introduce two new low temperature bonding technologies for the assembly of microstructured glass substrates for the realisation of microchannels for miniaturised chemical analysis applications. A first method consists of a proper cleaning of the two glass surfaces, followed by a simple epoxy gluing process at 90°C. In a second method, direct bonding is obtained just by exposing the glass stack to a high pressure (up to 50 MPa) in the 100-200°C temperature range. We obtain bonding strengths as high as 10

The intensity of Be-9 + p nuclear fusion reactions was experimentally studied during second harmonic (2 omega CH) ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) and further analyzed during fundamental hydrogen minority ICRH of JET-ILW hydrogen and deuterium plasma ...

We present techniques and methodologies for the manipulation of magnetic micro- and nanoparticles ('beads') in microfluidic systems. We first introduce the most important forces that act on magnetic particles in a microfluidic system. Starting with the magnetic force that is responsible for the primary actuation of the magnetic particles, we discuss the viscous drag force induced when the particles are moving with a speed different from the liquid in the microfluidic channel. These forces can be combined in

In-plane linear displacements of microelectromechanical systems are measured with subnanometer accuracy by observing periodic micropatterns with a CCD camera attached to an optical microscope. The translation of the microstructure is retrieved from the vid ...

We report on a high-efficiency and self-priming active-valve micropump consisting of a microfluidic chamber structure in glass that is assembled with a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastic sheet. The latter comprises two valving membranes and a central pump ...

This focus article introduces the concept of NutriChip, an integrated microfluidic platform for investigating the potential of the immuno-modulatory function of dairy food. The core component of the NutriChip is a miniaturized artificial human gastrointest ...

Nano-objects (8) with feature size smaller than the classical Abbe's diffraction limit can be optically detected via a microlens (4) array configured in a miniaturized microfluidic device. A hydrophilic microwell (3) array in a hydrophobic layer (2) is fir ...

Compact DT neutron generators based on accelerators are often built on the principle of a mixed beam operation, meaning that deuterium (D) and tritium (T) are both present in the ion beam and in the target. Moreover, the beam consists of a mixture of ions ...

We have measured the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) of Metglas®/Cu/Metglas trilayer stacks of micropatterned amorphous magnetic Metglas 2714a ribbons and Cu foils. We obtain roomtemperature GMI ratios [Z(0)-Z(Hs)]/Z(Hs) up to 800 % and GMR ratios [R(0)- R(Hs)]/R(Hs) up to 2400 % at frequencies of 100 kHz-10 MHz, with Hs the magnetic field where impedance and resistance saturate towards their minimum values. These high values are a direct consequence of the large dynamic relat

Mitochondrial respiration is a key signature for the assessment of mitochondrial functioning and mitochondrial dysfunction is related to many diseases including metabolic syndrome and aging-associated conditions. Here, we present a microfluidic Caenorhabdi ...

We present leakage-free valves and an efficient fixed-volume mixer fabricated using a four-layer soft lithography technique in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Mixing is achieved with a 95% efficiency in a few seconds by creating circular flow patterns inside ...

An effect due to fusion born triton production has been observed in JET high-performance deuterium plasma discharges with neutral beam injection (NBI) and H-minority ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating, using DD and deuterium tritium (DT) neu ...

Geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) may generate strong oscillations in the radial electric field and therefore are considered as a possible trigger mechanism for the L-H transition. This contribution focuses on the characterization of GAMs in JET plasmas when ...

We propose an original concept to perform a complete on-chip sandwich immunoassay on magnetic nanoparticles that are self-assembled in chains in a uniform magnetic field. The magnetic chains are retained over periodically enlarged cross sections of a micro ...

We present a new approach for the manipulation of small liquid samples for the miniaturization of bioanalytical systems. In our system, minute liquid volumes are manipulated via the interaction of a changeable magnetic field and magnetic microparticles con ...

We present a microfluidic device for on-chip analysis of low-concentration protein biomarkers. A new detection method, based on the magnetic capture of proteins via superparamagnetic beads and counting the surface coverage of the latter is presented. The p ...
