We present a method for magneto-microfluidic three-dimensional focusing of magnetic microparticles from a dense plug into a single streamline with longitudinal inter-particle spacing. Plug formation on-chip is induced by a high-gradient magnetic field gene ...

We describe the assembly of silica nanoparticles into superstructures with controlled shape and size. The individual nanoparticles are chemically linked to each other via silica bridges, thus providing high mechanical stability to the assembly. Key to cont ...

A new compact gamma-ray spectrometer was developed in order to optimise the measurement of bremsstrahlung radiation emitted from runaway electrons in the MeV range. The detector is based on a cerium doped lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) scintil ...

Frozen sections (FS) of tumor samples represent a cornerstone of pathological intraoperative consultation and have an important role in the microscopic analysis of specimens during surgery. So far, immunohistochemical (IHC) stainings on FS have been demons ...

The giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) of amorphous ribbon/Cu/amorphous ribbon trilayer microstructures, based on Metglas(TM) 2714a ribbons and Cu foils, is measured and analyzed. We obtain GMI and GMR ratios of 830% and 2630%, respectively, in the 0.2-20 MHz frequency range. These very large GMI and GMR values are a direct consequence of the large effective relative permeability due to the closed magnetic flux path in the trilayer structure. We study the effect of magnetocrystal

Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) are routinely seen in present-day tokamaks and stellarators with energetic particles and they represent an attractive form of MHD spectroscopy that provides valuable information on background plasma and on the energetic particles. P ...

We present the use of a microlens array in combination with a conventional optical microscope set-up for the detection of single nanoparticles (NPs) in fluid medium. Optically transparent dielectric microspheres are patterned in a microfabricated well array template and used as microlenses focusing the light originating from a microscope objective into so-called photonic nanojets that expose the medium within the microfluidic channel. When the NPs pass the nanojets, the detection signal is highly enhanced,

Matching the scale of microfluidic flow systems with that of microelectronic chips for realizing monolithically integrated systems still needs to be accomplished. However, this is appealing only if such re-scaling does not compromise the fluidic throughput ...

A disposable micropump is presented that uses the piston actuation principle and relies on the magnetic properties of a ferrofluid, a colloidal suspension of nanosize ferromagnetic particles. The cost effective micropump consists of 7 bonded layers of polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) that are either micromachined or structured by powder blasting. Two silicone check-valves are also integrated in the microchip. External dimensions of our prototype are 36 mm x 22 mm x 5 mm. The magnetic liquid plug is externally a

In this paper we describe the two-dimensional (2D) magnetic manipulation of aqueous droplets suspended in silicone oil over the chip surface. The magnetic actuation is based on the force imposed on superparamagnetic microparticles inside the droplets. Thes ...

The kinetic code for plasma periphery (KIPP) was used to assess the importance of the kinetic effects of parallel electron transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and divertor of JET high radiative H-mode inter-ELM plasma conditions with the ITER-like wall ...

We report on a novel microsynthesis method for easy controlling the size of silica micro- and nanoparticles. Colloids are synthesized in a microfluidic chamber by layer-wise adsorption of silica to precipitated nuclei. We prepare samples of spherical parti ...

The scope of this work has been the design of a mechanical actuator in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) / glass for precise liquid sampling, based on the electrochemical generation of O2. The device is composed of two chambers separated by a PDMS membrane. In t ...

Fast ions have recently been found to significantly impact and partially suppress plasma turbulence both in experimental and numerical studies in a number of scenarios. Understanding the underlying physics and identifying the range of their beneficial effe ...

We present the fabrication of a microlens array which can be integrated into a microfluidic device. In the demonstrated technique, a microwell array is firstly fabricated in a Parylene-C layer by a standard cleanroom process. Afterwards, the optically transparent dielectric microspheres with high refractive index are patterned inside the well template by utilizing an electrostatic technique. The mechanism of microsphere patterning is studied, and the lens effect of the microsphere is experimentally verified

The paper is dedicated to the characterisation of multi-strap ICRH antenna coupling to plasma. Relevance of traditional concept of coupling resistance to antennas with mutually coupled straps is revised and the importance of antenna port excitation consist ...

We present an aspect ratio dependent etching (ARDE) method, utilizing the Bosch dry etching process of silicon, to create the optimal silicon master microstructures for replication of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannels that allow immobilizing C. ele ...

We report the microfluidic chip-based assembly of colloidal silanol-functionalized silica nanoparticles using monodisperse water-in-oil droplets as templates. The nanoparticles are linked via silica bridges, thereby forming superstructures that range from ...

We discuss the successful transport of jurkat cells and 5D10 hybridoma cells using a reciprocating micropump with nozzle-diffuser elements. The effect of the pumping action on cell viability and proliferation, as well as on the damaging of cellular membran ...

Separation and subsequent culturing of MCF-7 breast cancer cells on self-assembled protein-coated magnetic beads in a microfluidic chip is demonstrated. The beads were patterned in situ inside a sealed microfluidic channel using magnetic-field-assisted electrostatic self-assembly. Hereafter, they were grafted by exposure to a solution of 5D10 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) and fibronectin (FN), with the first being used for immunospecific cell capture and the latter being used for cell adhesion and growth.
