Background: While many biological studies can be performed on cell-based systems, the investigation of molecular pathways related to complex human dysfunctions - e.g. neurodegenerative diseases - often requires long-term studies in animal models. The nemat ...

The phenomena of retention and de-trapping of deuterium (D) and tritium (T) in plasma facing components (PFC) and supporting structures must be understood in order to limit or control total T inventory in larger future fusion devices such as ITER, DEMO and ...

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is one of the main techniques currently used in the clinics for biomarker characterization. It consists in colorimetric labeling with specific antibodies followed by microscopy analysis. The results are then used for diagnosis an ...

High pressure-rated channels allow microfluidic assays to be performed on a smaller footprint while keeping the throughput, thanks to the higher enabled flow rates, opening perspectives for cost-effective integration of CMOS chips to microfluidics circuits ...

We report here a simple method, based on electrostatic self-assembly, for realizing bead-based single protein micro-arrays. We generate positively charged surface micro-patterns on a glass substrate and use them as template for adsorbing negatively-charged ...

The powder-blasting method is used to fabricate structures with a three-dimensional topography in glass using elastomeric masks. The relation between the mask opening width and the erosion depth is exploited to fabricate microstructures with varying depth ...

The Joint European Torus (JET), the largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment in operation, has a large amount of key diagnostics for physics exploration and machine operation, which include several Gamma Ray Diagnostics. The Gamma-Ray Spectro ...

We introduce powder blasting using a pressurised nozzle and a metallic mask as a new promising technology for microsystem fabrication. We study basic parameters of this powder blasting erosion process as well as mask-geometry effects on the erosion rate. We demonstrate the application potential of this technique in three important fields of microsystems research: (i) the realisation of microfluidic chips for biochemical separations, (ii) the micropatterning of composite hard magnetic layers for mechatronic

We present two types of oscillating diaphragm micropumps configured with passive ball valves and using electromagnetic actuation. One type is made out of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), while the other one is made out of borosilicate glass. Both were pro ...

We present powder blasting as a new technology for the realization of Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). The technique is base don the erosion of a masked substrate by a high velocity powder beam. We study the erosion rate of the process using glass wafers and introduce oblique powder blasting, where we vary the angle of incidence of the powder beam with respect tot the target surface. The oblique impact gives rise to particular side walls effects of micro patterned hole structures. We have applied th

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is an essential technology for DNA identification in genomic research. DNA fragmentation is a critical step for NGS and doing this on-chip is of great interest for future integrated genomic solutions. Here we demonstrate fa ...

We report on powder blasting as a promising technology for the three-dimensional structuring of brittle materials. We investigate the basic parameters of this process, which is based on the erosion of a masked substrate by a high-velocity eroding powder beam, using glass substrates. We study the effect of various parameters on the etching rate, like the powder velocity and the mask feature size, which induces geometrical effects to the erosion process. We introduce oblique powder blasting and investigate, i

We present a monolithic silicon chip comprising a matrix of 84 single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) to detect and discriminate fluorescent beads or fluorescently labeled single cells in a polydimethyl(-siloxane) (PDMS) cartridge that is positioned on top ...

We present the microfabrication and characterization of a reciprocating-type poly(methylmetacrylate) (PMMA) ball-valve micropump which is actuated with a high-performance and compact electromagnetic circuit of centimeter size. We have improved by finite el ...

We propose a microfabrication technology for a flexible temperature sensor with a 100x100 mu m(2) sensing area and a probe length of 7 cm. We use a biocompatible new high temperature-resistant polyimide (U-Vamish-S, Ube, Dosseldorf, Germany) to embed a thin film platinum resistor as sensing element. The sensor is operational from 0 degrees C up to 400 degrees C with an accuracy of +/- 1 degrees C at high temperatures and has a time constant of 0.05 seconds. This sensor was designed for temperature character

We have realised a microsystem for the culture and electrical characterisation of epithelial cell layers for cell-based diagnostic applications. The main goal of this work is to achieve both cell culture and impedimetric and potentiometric characterisation on a single device. The miniaturised cell culture system enables the uses of scarce epithelial cells, as obtained from transgenic mice or from human biopsies. The device is completely modular and offers high flexibility: a polycarbonate membrane used as c

Glucose uptake in muscle cells in response to insulin is a fundamental mechanism for metabolism. The inability of cells to mobilize the specific glucose transporter GLUT4 is believed to be at least partially accountable for diseases, like diabetes, where c ...

We propose the use of a high-refractive index glass microsphere in combination with a conventional fluorescence microscope for imaging sub-cellular organelles and biomolecules. The microsphere is placed on a sample that is immersed in water, collects the n ...

A calibration of the JET neutron detectors was carried out prior to the upcoming deuterium-tritium experimental campaign. Two Compact DT neutron generators (NGs) were purchased for this purpose from VNIIA, Russia. These generators are capable of producing ...

We have designed and realised a new type of microsystem for the electrical characterisation of epithelial cell layers for biomedical diagnostic purposes. We have used deep plasma and other micromachining procedures for the fabrication of vias and microfluidic channels in silicon and glass substrates. Miniaturised cell culture devices have been realised by gluing nano-porous polycarbonate membranes in between two structured wafers and by combining these with glass wafers to provide integrated microfluidic ch
