We report on real-time detection of single electrons inside a n-p-n bipolar junction transistor at room temperature. Single electrons injected through the base-emitter junction trigger with a high probability the avalanche breakdown of the strongly reverse ...

An innovative release method of polymer cantilevers with embedded integrated metal electrodes is presented. The fabrication is based on the lithographic patterning of the electrode layout on a wafer surface, covered by two layers of SU-8 polymer: a 10-um-t ...

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the possibility to achieve the strong coupling regime at room temperature with a microwave electronic oscillator coupled with an ensemble of electron spins. The coupled system shows bistable behaviour, with a ...

Hall devices having an active area of about (500 nm)(2) are fabricated by focused electron-beam-induced deposition. The deposited material consists of cobalt nanoparticles in a carbonaceous matrix. The realized devices have, at room temperature, a current ...

We report on the experimental observation of oscillation frequency jumps in microwave LC oscillators fabricated using standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technologies. The LC oscillators, operating at a frequency of about 20 GHz, consist of a ...

We present the first CMOS-only receiver chip for NMR-applications at 300 MHz. The system consists of an on-chip reception coil, a tuning-capacitor, a downconversion-mixer and a low-frequency gain-stage as well as biasing and offset-compensation circuitry. ...

The rapidly evolving field of 2D materials has developed a plethora of emerging micro/nano devices where atomically-thin materials play a fundamental role. In most cases, this implies the need of nanostructuring them, but due to their delicate nature, conventional lithographies using electrons or ions can deteriorate their performance. Thermal scanning probe lithography (t-SPL) is an advanced direct-write method that uses a heated nanotip for 2D and 3D subtractive/additive manufacturing [1]. The creation of

Implantable drug delivery systems that can realize a scheduled drug release according to the needs of patients would be highly beneficial for the treatment of chronic diseases and cancer. Here, micrometer‐sized hydrogel particles with both thermal and pH s ...

We investigated the performance of Hall sensors with different Co-C ratios, deposited directly in nanostructured form, using Co-2(CO)(8) gas molecules, by focused-electron or ion-beam-induced deposition. Due to the enhanced intergrain scattering in these g ...

We present the design, fabrication and test of high-Q factor radiofrequency planar microcoils for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in small volume samples. The coils are fabricated on glass wafers using high-aspect ratio SU-8 photoepoxy and copper electroplating. On-wafer electrical characterization shows quality factors up to 40 at 800 MHz. A 500 μm diameter microcoil with a measured quality factor of 24 at 300 MHz is mounted on a printed circuit board and electrically contacted using aluminum

Four-point probes (4PPs) are used for the resistivity measurement of thin metal or semiconductor films. There is an interest in miniaturization of 4PPs to obtain higher surface sensitivity, increased spatial resolution and less damage to the sample. Several attempts have been made to reduce the probe spacing, e.g. a four-tip scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was reported and a 4PP based on silicon cantilevers was designed. This paper shows design, fabrication and characterisation of a micrometer scale 4PP

Nanogap electrodes (NGEs) are a fundamental structure for the exploration of nanoscale phenomena. In this paper, we describe the fabrication and the electro-mechanical characterization of tunable tunneling NGEs on a stretchable PDMS substrate. Bottom-up ca ...

A new type of hydrogen dissociator for polarized atomic beams, based on a surface-wave discharge at 2.45 GHz, is described. We report dissociation-degree measurements as function of gas throughput, microwave power and oxygen fraction. A dissociation degree of more than 80% has been achieved for a gas input up to about 6 mbar 1/s.

We describe a setup for the x-ray detection of ferromagnetic resonance in the longitudinal geometry using element-specific transmission measurements. Thin magnetic film samples are placed in a static magnetic field collinear with the propagation direction ...

The observation of the production of antihydrogen atoms H̄0 = p̄e+, the simplest atomic bound state of antimatter, is presented. A method has been used by the PS210 collaboration at LEAR which assumes that the production of H̄0 is predominantly mediated by the e+e--pair creation via the two-photon mechanism in the antiproton-nucleus interaction. Neutral H̄0 atoms are indentified by a unique sequence of characteristics. In principle H̄0 is well suited for investigations of fundamental CPT violation studies u

We report the fabrication, functionalization and testing of microdevices for cell culture and cell traction force measurements in three-dimensions (3D). The devices are composed of bent cantilevers patterned with cell-adhesive spots not lying on the same p ...

Innovative surface imaging techniques allowing parallel magnetic and topographical microscopy with nanometer scale spatial resolution are developed in this project. Nanometer scale magnetosensitive devices on Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) tips will be studied and fabricated, allowing quantitative and noninvasive magnetic field imaging with spatial resolution better than 100 nm and magnetic field resolution better than 100 mT/Hz. Such performance will allow one to perform magnetic microscopy studies, which a

A new technology based on a combination of Al-protection layers and HF-vapor etching to produce ultrathin single crystal silicon cantilevers is presented. 500 um long, 10 um wide and 0.5 um thick cantilevers have been fabricated with a high yield. A resona ...

Embedding liquid metals (LMs) into an elastomer is emerging as a promising strategy for stretchable conductors. Existing manufacturing techniques are struggling between spatial resolution and process complexity and are limited to chemically resistant subst ...

Inductive proximity sensors are low-cost and versatile detectors achieving resolutions in the nm and sub-nm range. Their typical working frequency ranges from tens of kHz to a few MHz. Operation at higher frequencies is considered as a possible route for t ...
