A novel MEMS technological platform for RF passive components, namely RF MEMS switches, tuneable capacitors and high-Q suspended inductors, is reported. The proposed process employs a metal (Al, AlSi or Cu) as active movable layer and amorphous silicon or polycrystalline silicon as sacrificial layers, providing multi-air-gaps. Various types of substrates like bulk silicon and SOI can be used. Full-dry releasing of suspended beams and membranes is performed with SF_6 or XeF_2, with unrivalled yield/reproduci

Mixing liquids on the micro-scale is difficult because the low Reynolds numbers in microchannels and in microreactors prohibit the use of conventional mixing techniques based on mechanical stirring which induces turbulence. Static mixers can be used to solve this mixing problem. In this paper, micromixers having geometries very close to those of conventional large-scale static mixers used in the chemical and food-processing industry are presented. Two kind of geometries have been studied. The first type of

We present a finite element based simulation and analysis method to describe the spatial extent of stimulation and the effects of electrode–tissue interactions in subretinal prostheses. In particular, we estimate the threshold stimulation current needed to ...

A method to evaluate capacitance based on parameter extraction from finite- element analysis as well as a global model for a novel silicon microfabricated accelerometer are presented. Mechanical simulations have been performed and results are coupled with the capacitance-evaluation method to compute the static and dynamic response of the accelerometer. Using both mechanical data and capacitance data, a global model for the accelerometer is generated with models written in Hardware Description Language for A

Cell cycle synchronization is an important tool for the study of the cell division stages and signalling. It provides homogeneous cell cultures that are of importance to develop and improve processes such as protein synthesis and drug screening. The main a ...

We present a microfluidic dielectrophoretic-actuated system designed to trap chosen single-cell and form controlled cell aggregates. A novel method is proposed to characterize the efficiency of the dielectrophoretic trapping, considering the flow speed but ...

A simple and efficient technique for the fabrication of buried microfluidic channels is presented. Microchannels made using a contribution of thick liquid and laminated photopolymers are used for the realization of smart microchips for culture, stimulation and recording of neural cell arrays. We present the fabrication, characterization, use in cortical recording and histological results of a flexible implantable neural probe. The microfabricated device is implemented in polyimide and platinum providing mechanical flexibility, high quality elec ...

We use Molecular Dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations to examine molecular transport phenomena in nanochannels, explaining four orders of magnitude difference in wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) protein diffusion rates observed by fluorescence correlation spect ...

The present paper describes a microfluidic oscillator based on facing impinging jets and operating in laminar flow conditions. Using appropriate microchannel configurations, pulsatile liquid flows are generated at the microscale from steady and equal inlet ...

A method for determining the presence of a molecule coupled to the cytoplasmic side of a cellular membrane is disclosed. The method is implemented in a microfluidic setting and is particularly suitable for determining the presence and/or the activity of a ...

Accurate perception of taste information is crucial for animal survival. In adult Drosophila, gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) perceive chemical stimuli of one specific gustatory modality associated with a stereotyped behavioural response, such as aversio ...

Locomotion in vertebrates is controlled by central pattern generators in the spinal cord. The roles of specific network architecture and neuronal properties in rhythm generation by such spinal networks are not fully understood. We have used multisite recording from dissociated cultures of embryonic rat spinal cord grown on multielectrode arrays to investigate the patterns of spontaneous activity in randomised spinal networks. We were able to induce similar patterns of rhythmic activity in dissociated cultur

A method of producing a cryogel-based multicompartment 3D scaffold is herein disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: a) providing a first frozen polymeric layer on a refrigerated support kept at subzero temperature; b) providing subsequent polymeric ...

For over 30 years, carbon fiber microelectrodes have been the gold standard for measurements related to exocytosis and more generally to the processes taking place at the synaptic level. However, this method has a low throughput and molecules can escape de ...

Many biological methods are based on single-cell isolation. In single-cell line development, the gold standard involves the dilution of cells by means of a pipet. This process is time-consuming as it is repeated over several weeks to ensure clonality. Here ...

We have developed an active microphotodiode array (MPDA) for retinal stimulation. The unique feature of the device is that each pixel acts as an independent oscillator, whose frequency is controlled by the incident light intensity. The design is based on a ...

In this study we present a novel microfluidic hydrodynamic trapping device to probe the cell–cell interaction between all cell samples of two distinct populations. We have exploited an hydrodynamic trapping method using microfluidics to immobilize a batch ...

A set of new technologies to fabricate microchannels using photosensitive polymer materials is presented. They are based on the use of polymers, hereafter called photopolymers, that are cured with UV light under a mask exposure. The basic material is ail epoxy-based photopolymer which can be patterned in thick layers with high aspect ratio.-Several process variations for making multilayered channel network are described and discussed. a) a process based on the refill of channels with a non-sensitive polymer

We report a process for the realization of polyimide films with custom-designed microporosity based on the heat-induced depolymerization of polyimide-embedded polypropylene carbonate microstructures. The foam-like microstructures are up to 40 µm thick and ...
