We describe a new low-cost technique for continuous monitoring of the thickness of biofilms and tissue cultures, and we demonstrate the advantage of using electrodes of different dimensions to probe different depths of a sample. We have used electric imped ...

This paper describes a lab-on-a-chip device for continuous liquid/solid chromatography measurements. Chromatographic separations of phenolic test solutions as well as of vitamins are illustrating the ability and versatility of the system. The dependence of ...

We present the use of an array of rectangular microelectrodes to discriminate between different resistivities in a thin, layered sample. Each electrode was 8 rum long and 200 nm thick. The electrode widths ranged from 20 to 500/mum. The electrodes were designed such that all pairs of consecutive electrodes had the same relative geometry, and therefore identical cell constants. A hydrogel-based tissue phantom, made by photopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), was developed. By changing the h

New cell-imprint surface modification techniques based on direct-cell photolithography and optical soft lithography using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) cell imprints are presented for enhanced cell-based studies. The core concept of engineering materials f ...

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative disease in elderly people. Toxic brain amyloid-beta (ASS) aggregates and ensuing cell death are believed to play a central role in the pathogenesis of the disease. In this study ...

Bubble-free electroosmotic flow (fr-EOF) of aqueous electrolytes in microfluidic channels with integrated electrodes is demonstrated. Undesirable electrolytic bubble formation is avoided by applying a periodic, zero net charge current to generate a nonzero ...

The design, fabrication techniques and characterization of an on-chip flow- cytometer device as well as the packaging approach is described. The device consists of planar microelectrodes situated on one or both sides of a micro- channel connected to an electronic detection circuitry. Simulations of the cells effect on the channel impedance are presented and compared with real measurements. Efforts have particularly been focused on realizing an interconnnecting setup to provide easy electrical and fluidic co

We developed Al2O3/W heterogeneous nanopore arrays for field effect modulated nanofluidic diodes. They are fabricated by transferring self-organized nanopores of anodic aluminium oxide into a W thin film. The nanopores are ∼20 nm in diameter and 400 nm in ...

While interference colors have been known for a longtime, conventionalcolor filters have large spatial dimensions and cannot be used tocreate compact pixelized color pictures. Here we report a simple yetelegant interference-based method of creating microsc ...

We present the development, characterization and in vivo validation of a novel drug eluting coating that has been applied to flexible neural probes. The coating consists of drug eluting nanoparticles loaded with an anti-inflammatory drug embedded in a biod ...

This paper reports on polyimide microfluidic devices fabricated by photolithography and a layer transfer lamination technology. The microchannels are sealed by laminating an uncured polyimide film on a partially cured layer and subsequent imidization. Sele ...

We develop a microionizer as the ion source in a miniaturized spectrometerlike gas analyzer, operating at atmospheric pressure. Several options for the ionizing principle were considered. The application of dc glow discharge in a microsystem was studied in ...

The analytical modeling and simulation of conservative electrostatic, electromagnetic and electrodynamic transducers found in microsystems using a non-linear lumped-parameter approach is presented in this paper. A comparison is made between this approach and the linearized equivalent circuit method All models of transducers are written in HDL-A(TM), a proprietary analogue hardware description language (HDL). System-level simulation is performed in the SPICE simulator using behavioral models of the transduce

Purpose: Assessment on enucleated pig eyes of a novel and minimally invasive method for the continuous monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP), based on a novel wireless contact lens sensor (CLS). Methods: The wireless CLS is a disposable silicone soft co ...

We present a simple and easy to handle PDMS microfluidic device for neuronal cell culture studies in three-dimensional hydrogel scaffolds. The hydrogel is structured in parallel layers to reconstruct cell layers close to the natural environment. Dissociated cortical neurons of embryonic rats have been cultured in 0.5% w/v agarose including 0.2% w/v alginate. The cells formed neurite networks through neighboring cell free hydrogel layers. The cell culture showed neurite outgrowth in the microfluidic channel

IB-LIGA (Ion Beam Lithographie, Galvanoformung and Abformung) is a new technique for the 3D structuring of photoresist materials. It is a direct-write (maskless) technique that uses high energy (0.5-3.5 McV) light ions (protons or helium ions) for the irradiation of photoresist materials. At CAFI (Centre d'Analyse par Faisceau Ionique), the IB-LIGA technique has been implemented. The experimental parameters for irradiation and the subsequent development have been optimised for PMMA. The results obtained so

Micro-channel cooling is gaining considerable attention as an alternative technique for cooling of high energy physics detectors. This is of particular interest for future trackers, where large silicon surfaces are involved and the amount of material cross ...

A novel MEMS device architecture: the SOI SG-MOSFET, which combines a solid- state MOS transistor and a suspended metal membrane in a unique metal-over- gate architecture, is proposed. A unified physical analytical model (weak, moderate and strong inversions) is developed and used to investigate main electrostatic characteristics in order to provide first-order design criteria for low-voltage operation and high-performance. It is demonstrated that the use of a thin gate oxide (

iomimetics often provides efficient ways to create a product incorporating novel properties. Here we present the replication of the Pieris rapae butterfly optical structure. This butterfly has white wings with black spots. The white coloration is produced ...

Differentiation of stem cells into mature cells through the use of physical approaches is of great interest. Here, we prepared smart nanoenvironments by cell-imprinted substrates based on chondrocytes, tenocytes, and semifibroblasts as templates and demons ...
