We present a method to measure effective diffusion coefficients of fluorescently labeled molecules inside a nanofluidic system. Molecules with small diffusion coefficients show a larger lateral dispersion than highly diffusive species, which is counterintu ...

We have fabricated a microfluidic device based on a novel geometrical arrangement of lateral metal electrodes and a patterned insulator. Our device combines the concept of insulator-based “electrodeless” dielectrophoresis with multiple frequencies to achie ...

Rat spinal networks generate a spontaneous rhythmic output directed to motoneurons under conditions of increased excitation or of disinhibition. It is not known whether these differently induced rhythms are produced by a common rhythm generator. To investigate the generation and the propagation of rhythmic activity in spinal networks, recordings need to be made from many neurons simultaneously. Therefore extracellular multisite recording was performed in slice cultures of embryonic rat spinal cords grown on

This paper describes the development of microelectrodes with integrated three-dimensional electrode structures. The integration of three-dimensional structures aims at an improvement of the electrode/tissue interface. Due to the increase in surface area the electrode impedance is reduced, while the density of microelectrodes per area remains the same as with flat electrodes. Two different types of electrodes have been developed: Flexible, implantable microelectrodes with pyramidal, protruding structures and

Microstereolithography is a 3D microfabrication technology that is fundamentally different from the techniques commonly used in cleanroom environment for the manufacturing of MEMS components. Most microfabrication techniques evolved from the microelectronics industry and often use silicon wafers as substrate or carrier material, thin films of metals deposited by evaporation or sputtering, thin layers of polymers deposited by spin coating and patterned by photolithography, chemical and plasma etching to gene

We present a new method for measuring the electrical resistivities of a stratified sample of thin biomaterials or tissue layers. The presented technique makes use of impedance measurements between It pairs of electrodes separated by varying distances. The ...

Several recent detector technologies developed for particle physics applications are based on microfabricated structures. Detectors built with this approach generally exhibit the overall best performance in terms of spatial and time resolution. Many proper ...

This paper reports on a device capable of electrical cell lysis and evaluation of lysis efficiency in continuous flow using dielectrophoretic cell sorting. The device uses an innovative design, called liquid electrodes, to perform both cell lysis and cell sorting. A study of the cell position after sorting shows a very efficient lysis when a voltage of 55 Vpp is applied, whereas a voltage of 28Vpp does not induce any lysis.

A novel liquid scintillation detector with high spatial resolution is being developed with standard microfabrication techniques. It consists of a dense array of scintillating waveguides obtained by filling microfluidic channels with an organic liquid scint ...

The isolation, analysis, and enumeration of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patient blood samples are a paradigm shift for cancer patient diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring. Most methods used to isolate and enumerate these target cel ...

Controlling alginate gel formation by diffusion of Ca2+ ions through a filter barrier, a layer-by-layer deposition technique with resolution on the size scale of a single cell is presented. It offers the possibility of exposing cells under biocompatible co ...

Droplet breakup is an important phenomenon in the field of microfluidics to generate daughter droplets. In this work, a novel breakup regime in the widely studied T-junction geometry is reported, where the pinch-off occurs laterally in the two outlet chann ...

In this paper a nanofluidic molecular filtration system based on soft alginate hydrogel fillings and a solid-state alumina support membrane is presented. The electrostatically controlled diffusion is characterized by partition coefficient of the hydrogel and the flux through the composite membrane for positively and negatively charged dye molecules. The partition coefficient of negatively charged fluorescein sodium molecules into the gel is 2 orders of magnitude lower in 1 mM KCl solution than that in 1 M K

Transport of fluid in and around nanometer-sized objects with at least one characteristic dimension below 100 nm renders possible phenomena that are not accessible at bigger length scales. This research field is termed nanofluidics and received its name on ...

Cell shape is a fundamental biological feature, providing specific information about physiological or pathological cellular conditions. Most of the state-of-the-art microfluidic cytometers, however, only allow simple cell analysis, including viability stud ...

In order to provide an alternative measurement tool for arsenic contamination, we are developing a sensor that uses agarose beads containing a genetically engineered Escherichia coli strain producing a fluorescent signal in response to arsenite. Beads with cells are incorporated into a microfluidic system where they can be exposed to aqueous samples containing arsenic.

Described herein are microelectrode array devices, and methods of fabrication and use of the same, to provide highly localized and efficient electrical stimulation of a neurological target. The device includes multiple microelectrode elements arranged alon ...

Microstereolithography is a 3D microfabrication technology that is fundamentally different from the techniques commonly used in cleanroom environment for the manufacturing of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) components. Most microfabrication techniques evolved from the microelectronics industry and often use silicon wafers as substrate or carrier material, thin films of metals deposited by evaporation or sputtering, thin layers of polymers deposited by spin coating and patterned by photolithography, and

The invention provides for a device (100) for use in electrical nerve modulation in a subject, characterized in that it comprises a rotational and linear actuator (110); a tubular element (101) having a proximal end connected to the actuator (110) and a di ...

This paper reports the fabrication and electrical characterization of high tuning range AlSi RF MEMS capacitors. We present experimental results obtained by a surface micromachining process that uses dry etching of sacrificial amorphous silicon to release ...
