The sensitivity of RF CMOS receivers using a direct conversion or a low-IF architecture is strongly affected by flicker noise. This paper gives theoretical guidelines to predict the flicker noise in Gilbert-cell mixers. The conversion gain, the equivalent input and output noise, and the effect of the pole at the single internal RF node are discussed. For the first time, results which are valid in all modes of operation are given. Such complete results are required for some ultra low-power and low-voltage ap

The design of analog circuits strongly relies on the accuracy of the models available in the circuit simulators. The recently proposed BSIM6 bulk MOSFET compact model is set to replace the hitherto widely used BSIM3 and BSIM4 models as the de-facto industrial standard. Unlike its predecessors which were threshold voltage based, the BSIM6 core is charge-based and thus physically continuous at all levels of inversion and from linear region to saturation region. Hence, it lends itself conveniently for the use

This letter introduces a 5-transistors (5T) implementation of CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) pixels enabling the combination of deep sub-electronnoise performance with wide dynamic range (DR). The 5T pixel presents a new technique to reduce the sense node capaci ...

In the first part of the paper, also in this issue of the JOURNAL, the design of the frequency synthesizer and receiver section of an FSK transceiver was described. It operates in the 434-MHz ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) band and is realized in a standard digital 0.5-μm CMOS process. This companion paper focuses on the realization of the transmitter section. It includes a power amplifier, an upconverter, and the circuit generating the baseband quadrature signals with a continuous phase modulation.

In this paper, we propose a methodology to evaluate the potential of submicrometer organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with nanoimprinted gate and self-aligned source and drain contacts. In the first step, the dedicated static model we previously reporte ...

A low power sub-sampling multi-channel 2.4-GHz receiver front-end is presented. Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) resonators which intrinsically exhibit high quality factor (Q) are exploited in the frequency synthesis to provide low phase noise signal with low power consumption. A low power solution to perform channel selection and filtering directly at RF by employing current reuse and using a BAW resonator is proposed. The filter is capable of tuning the bandwidth and thus making the front-end to be suitable for m

In this article, the impact of the combination of the column-level gain and the correlated multiple sampling (CMS) on the noise of CMOS image sensor (CIS) readout chains is first analyzed. The theory is then validated experimentally with CIS readout chains ...

The downscaling of CMOS processes has led to devices with an impressive RF performance. Advanced nanoscale RF MOSFETs present very high transit frequency, which can be traded off with lower power consumption, by shifting the operating point towards the wea ...

The recent advances made in MEMS and particularly in RF MEMS technology are enabling new architectures for the integration of RF transceivers with improved performance and smaller size. Several fundamental building blocks benefit from the availability of h ...

This paper presents a low-power analog simulator for the transient stability of a two-machine power system. The simulator is implemented in a standard digital CMOS process. Its building blocks are: sine shaper, transconductor with extended linear range, and parametric current amplifier. All these circuits operate in weak inversion and use the bulk as an active terminal. Simulation time is typically 104 times shorter than the real time simulated phenomena

A sub-sampling RF front end which exploits the intrinsically high quality factor of MEMS devices for performing channel filtering directly at RF is proposed in this work. This narrow band filtering at RF also acts as a good anti-aliasing filter to support down-conversion by sub-sampling. The RF front end employs current reuse for amplification, mixing and filtering. A low phase noise BAW based DCO is used as the reference clock for channel selection and sub-sampling. The front end is integrated in 0.18 μm C

This paper highlights some of the challenges faced in the modeling of MOSFET devices operating at cryogenic temperature (CT). It will review the most important phenomena, including the saturation of the subthreshold swing (S S) below a critical temperature ...

This work presents a Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) resonator based 2.4-GHz front-end compliant to the Bluetooth LE standard and targeting advanced biomedical applications. A new transceiver architecture is proposed that combines BAW resonators and a sub-sampling architecture. It takes advantage of the high-Q of BAW resonators to perform channel filtering directly at RF. At the same time it also carries-out the critical anti-alias filtering required by the subsequent sub-sampling down-conversion mixer generating

This paper proposes, for the first time, a compact model for avalanche noise diodes that can easily be inserted in advanced CAD tools. The model is based on the theory of the Read type microwave avalanche diodes. It fully accounts for the electronic tuning ...

In this paper, a novel circuit referred to as complex Gm-C sampler that can be used for sub-sampling IF signals is presented. The circuit employs a conventional cross-coupled Gm-C filter structure with a built-in sampler to combine th ...

Many amputees have maps of referred sensation from their missing hand on their residual limb (phantom maps). This skin area can serve as a target for providing amputees with tactile sensory feedback. Providing tactile feedback on the phantom map can improv ...

This work explores the combination of a downscaled technology with in-pixel source-follower (SF) optimization, a high column-level gain and an analog implementation of Correlated-Multiple-Sampling (CMS) for noise reduction of CIS readout chains. Transient ...

Impact of physical parameters of ferroelectric layer on the performance of Negative Capacitance (NC) MOSFETs is experimentally studied in this paper. Electrical behaviors of PZT-based and Si:HfO2-based NC-FETs are investigated and discussed. In a PZT-based ...

The Ward-Dutton (WD) partitioning scheme is used extensively to develop transient and high-frequency advanced compact models in MOSFET analysis. However, it remains an open question if this scheme can be used for field-dependent mobility that is enhanced i ...

After a brief review of the principle of correlated multiple sampling (CMS) and its implementation techniques in CIS readout chains, a simple CMS passive circuit that (i) requires no additional active circuitry, (ii) has no impact on the output dynamic ran ...
