We report pressure-induced metallization in BaMn 2 P 2 based on resistivity measurements in a diamond anvil cell. At ambient pressure, the temperature-dependent resistivity is well described by a two-gap Arrhenius model, yielding intrinsic and extrinsic activation energies of approximately 0.2 and 0.04 eV, respectively. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) shows no detectable spectral weight at the Fermi level within the measured momentum window. The growth of spectral weight at higher binding

We derive a refraction law for superconducting vortices at superconductor/normal metal (S/N) interfaces that are exposed to tilted magnetic fields. Simulations of the proximity effect confirm this law and reveal vortex trapping for low effective mass. Under transport currents, we find tilt-angle-dependent core displacements due to vortex viscosities differing across the S/N interface and characteristic voltage oscillations due to the modified vortex dynamics. Our results are important for emerging three-dim

The superconducting diode effect is a key nonreciprocal phenomenon with broad relevance for superconducting electronics. Using time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau simulations, we predict and quantify a superconducting diode effect arising solely from geometric chirality imposed on a conventional superconductor. The helical geometry and magnetic-field-induced screening currents produce inequivalent critical currents for opposite polarities. The diode efficiency reaches a maximum when one current direction first n

Cryogenic systems are essential to many modern scientific and technological applications, including MRI superconducting magnets, particle accelerators, astrophysical detectors and quantum computing platforms, all of which operate at temperatures well below 120 K. In this framework, accurate temperature monitoring is, therefore, critical. However, conventional Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) suffer from significant limitations in cryogenic environments, such as wiring complexity, power dissipation, l

The steady decline of neutron imaging (NI) facilities, exacerbated by the closure of several research reactors such as Orphée (LLB, France) and BER (HZB, Germany), has increased the importance of leveraging existing reactors for NI applications. Zero-power research reactors offer a low-cost and flexible platform for student training, materials research and development, and proof-of-principle studies that can support larger neutron facilities. Previously, no dedicated NI beamline was available at the EPFL ze

We present a comprehensive first-principles study of the magnetoresistance in ZrSi⁢𝑋 (𝑋= ⁢S, Se, Te) topological nodal-line semimetals. Our study demonstrates that all primary features of the experimentally measured magnetoresistance in these materials are captured by our calculations, including the unusual butterfly-shaped anisotropic magnetoresistance. This anisotropic magnetoresistance can be accurately reproduced using the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory without introducing any information on t

This paper presents the design, construction, and simulation-based validation of the ColdBox, a combined neutron shielding and insulating enclosure for the Scattering and Neutrino Detector at the LHC (SND@LHC). The emulsion films in the detector's target region require protection from the intense neutron radiation background and a stable environment of 15 +/- 1 degrees C and 50-55% relative humidity for long-term stability. The ColdBox meets these requirements through a dual-layer structure: an external 5 c

Magnonics is an exciting and rapidly growing field revolving around the study and manipulation of magnons, the low-lying collective excitations of magnetically ordered systems. This field has emerged in response to both fundamental physics interests and the growing demand for faster, more efficient, and more reliable signal processing and computation up to THz frequencies, i.e., beyond clock frequencies of current computer technology. Magnonic devices promise to transmit and process information in ways that

This work unit proposes to construct a cold indirect geometry time of flight spectrometer for performing inelastic neutron scattering experiments optimized for optimal efficiency in the horizontal scattering plane at the European Spallation Source. A horizontal geometry is chosen for compatibility with performing neutron scattering experiments under extreme conditions. The instrument concept is called the Continuous Angular Multiple Energy Analysis Spectrometer, CAMEA. In this report we will outline the sci

The crossover from an exciton gas to an electron-hole plasma is studied in a GaN/(Al,Ga)N single quantum well by means of combined time-resolved and continuous-wave photoluminescence measurements. The two-dimensional Mott transition is found to be of continuous type and to be accompanied by a characteristic modification of the quantum well emission spectrum. Beyond the critical density, the latter is strongly influenced by band-gap renormalization and Fermi filling of continuum states. Owing to the large bi

Inelastic x-ray scattering is used to investigate charge-density wave (CDW) formation and the low-energy lattice dynamics of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.54. We find that, for a temperature similar to 1/3 of the CDW onset temperature (approximate to 155 K), the CDW order is static within the resolution of the experiment, that is the inverse lifetime is less than 0.3 meV. In the same temperature region, low-energy phonons near the ordering wave vector of the CDW show larg

We report the temperature dependence of the resistivity and thermoelectric power (TEP) under hydrostatic pressure of the itinerant antiferromagnet BaFe2As2 and the electron-doped superconductor Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)(2)As-2. We observe a hole-like contribution to the thermopower below the structural/magnetic (S-M) transition in the parent compound that is suppressed in magnitude and temperature with pressure. Pressure increases the contribution of electrons to transport in both the doped and undoped compound. In th

We discuss two different approaches for tuning the giant spin-orbit splitting of a BiAg2 surface alloy. The first approach consists of electron doping by alkaline metal deposition in order to shift the energy position of the spin-split surface states, while the second is based on the novel Si(1 1 1)-Ag-BiAg2 trilayer system. In both cases the spin-polarized structure near the Fermi level can be controlled by an external parameter, while the second approach permits coupling the concept of giant spin-splittin

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic anisotropy of Fe and Co ultrathin layers on strongly polarizable metal substrates. Monolayer (ML) films of Co and Fe on Rh(111) have been investigated in situ by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), magneto-optic Kerr effect, and scanning tunneling microscopy. The experiments show that both magnetic adlayers exhibit ferromagnetic order and enhanced spin and orbital moments compared to the bulk metals. The easy magnetizat

We employed electron spin resonance (ESR) technique in the investigation of a series of graphene flakes with different size distributions. Graphene oxide (GO) samples with three distinct size distributions were prepared by the Brodie method. Large flakes of similar to 2500 mu m(2), intermediate size flakes of similar to 1 mu m(2), and small ones of 500 nm(2) have been characterized by ESR in the 4-295 K temperature range. Already for GO flakes the magnetic response strongly varies with their size. Large GO

The chapter “Magnetism of low-dimensional metallic structures” reviews experiments on the magnetism of surface-supported low-dimensional structures of 3d metals. Controlling the static and dynamic magnetic behavior of both individual impurities and supported nanostructures on nonmagnetic surfaces represents a fundamental challenge as well as a prerequisite to design magnetic storage and logic devices of novel conception. We describe the governing principles of self-organized growth of metallic nanostructure

We report neutron diffraction data on single crystal PrO2 which reveal a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion at TD=120±2 K. Below this temperature an internal distortion of the oxygen sublattice causes the unit cell of the crystallographic structure to become doubled along one crystal axis. We discuss several possible models for this structure. The antiferromagnetic structure below TN=13.5 K is found to consist of two components, one of which shares the same doubled unit cell as the distorted crystallographi

Photoluminescence of p-type modulation doped (Cd,Mn)Te quantum wells is studied with carrier density up to 5 X 10(11) cm(-2) at various spin splittings. This splitting can be made larger than the characteristic energies of the system thanks to the giant Zeeman effect. At small spin splitting and regardless of the carrier density, the photoluminescence exhibits a single line, which corresponds to the charged exciton in the singlet state. Above a certain spin splitting, the charged exciton is destabilized in

This thesis analyzes the properties of heavily doped nanocrystalline titanium dioxide. Thin films were deposited by magnetron sputtering with either water vapor as reactive gas or a periodically interrupted oxygen supply. The samples were at the same time electrically conducting and transparent. They consisted of mixtures of rutile, anatase and amorphous phases. Titanium dioxide is chemically stable, hard, non-toxic, transparent, and inexpensive. Due to a high refractive index it is often found in optical a

The spin excitation spectrum in the 2D square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet CFTD has been investigated using time-of-flight neutron scattering. The magnon dispersion and intensities have been determined as a function of wavevector Q in the full Brillouin zone. Both quantities are found to deviate significantly from the predictions of linear spin wave theory for wavevectors in the vicinity of Q = (pi, 0), whereas good agreement is found near Q = (pi/2, pi/2).
