Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals very surprising strain-induced effects on the electronic band dispersion of epitaxial La2-xSrxCuO4-delta thin films. In strained films we measure a band that crosses the Fermi level (E-F) well before the Brillouin zone boundary. This is in contrast to the flat band reported in unstrained single crystals and in our unstrained films, as well as in contrast to the band flattening predicted by band structure calculations for in-plane compressive strain. In spite

A rapid algorithm for tomographic inversion is presented that allows post-discharge reconstruction of the soft x-ray (SXR) emissivity evolution in the Tokamak a configuration variable (TCV). Simultaneously, it determines the centre of gravity of the emissivity that may serve as a reliable measurement of the plasma position, that is independent of magnetic measurements. Tests of the algorithm were performed using shaped phantom datasets and all past SXR measurements were processed to obtain plasma position s

With the advent of the very intense 3rd generation synchrotron sources of X rays, new powerful spectroscopic techniques, requiring the detection of very low cross section phenomena, have come of age. Among them Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) is rapidly becoming a major probe of the electronic structure of solids. RIXS measures the decay radiation that follows the excitation of core electrons into states located in a narrow region above the Fermi level. It shares with other core-level spectroscop

We have measured two structurally similar superconducting systems, RuSr2GdCu2O8 and GdBa2Cu3O7 by means of high-resolution ac susceptibility. The real and the imaginary part of ac susceptibility of both bulk-ceramic and powdered samples have been studied down to the very small magnetic-field levels. We show that there are significant differences in the evolution of superconductivity in the two studied superconducting systems. In particular, we show that the superconducting transition in the grains in RuSr2G

We measured polycrystalline samples of SrRuO3 and both superconducting and nonsuperconducting (hydrogen loaded) ruthenocuprates-Eu1.5Ce0.5RuSr2Cu2O10-x (Ru-1222)-samples using ac susceptibility, Ru 3p x-ray photoemission and Ru 2p x-ray-absorption measurements. The superconducting-and metallic-ruthenocuprate samples exhibit significant ferromagnetic fluctuations above the highest magnetic ordering temperature. The (Ru 3p) core level of the SrRuO3, and superconducting ruthenocuprate samples indicate that the

A neutron-scattering study of nonsuperconducting La2-xSrxCaCu2O6 (x=0 and 0.2), a bilayer copper oxide without CuO chains, has revealed an unexpected tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition with a doping dependent transition temperature. The predominant structural modification below the transition is an in-plane shift of the apical oxygen. In the doped sample, the orthorhombic superstructure is strongly disordered, and a glassy state involving both magnetic and structural degrees of freedom develops at low te

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the quasi-one-dimensional Peierls system K0.3MoO3 reveals a "hidden" open Fermi surface and band features displaying the symmetry properties of the underlying lattice. However, the ARPES line shapes and optical data suggest that the corresponding quasiparticles are heavily renormalized by strong electron-phonon interactions. The temperature dependence of the leading edge of the mostly incoherent spectrum bears signatures of the Peierls tra

Mono and multifilamentary HTS tapes exhibit non-negligible AC loss in self-field and considerably higher losses in the presence of external magnetic field. The effect of the conductor’s geometry on the AC loss has been investigated in this paper. The nonlinear electromagnetic properties of the superconducting material are expressed with a B-dependent E-J power law and are implemented in Finite Element Method commercial software. The critical current density and the power index n dependence on B are obtained

For the first time, a very general theoretical method is proposed to interpret the full electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra at multiple temperatures and frequencies in the important case of S-state metal ions complexed in liquid solution. This method is illustrated by a careful analysis of the measured spectra of two Gd3+ (S = 7/2) complexes. It is shown that the electronic relaxation mechanisms at the origin of the EPR line shape arise from the combined effects of the modulation of the static cry

We have measured the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) of microstructured Co-based Metglas (R) 2714a amorphous magnetic ribbons. Before micropatterning, the amorphous ribbons were chemically thinned or polished, to study the influence of sample thickness and surface state on the GMI effect. The magnetic domain structure of polished foils near saturation is observed using the bitter fluid technique. The well-defined geometry of the samples allows a quantitative comparison of the GMI effect with a simple skin dept

Recent photoemission evidence for non-zero gap in highly overdoped Bi2Sr2-CaCu2O8+x, along the directions in the Brillouin zone where the d-wave gap exhibits nodes, is in accordance with more conventional behavior in strongly overdoped high-T-c cuprates. This differs from underdoped regime, where departures from Fermi-liquid (FL) behavior are found. Observed non-FL linear resistivity up to similar to 1050 K in low-T-c perovskite Sr2RuO4-delta is reminiscent of cuprates and implies some similarities between

Third harmonic generation (THG) efficiency is shown to be a greatly enhanced at the onset of inelastic scattering of electrons on optic phonons. Scaling experiments are performed on n-type InP at the pump wave frequency of 9.43 GHz at 80 K. Monte Carlo modeling is employed for scaling the effect to the 3(rd) harmonic frequency of 1 THz. The THG efficiency in n-type GaAs and InP as well as in the wurtzite phase of n-type InN and GaN compound crystals is compared to that in n-type Si. The efficiency maximum i
