This work focuses on the coupling of trimmed shell patches using Isogeometric Analysis, based on higher continuity splines that seamlessly meet the

requirement of Kirchhoff-Love-based discretizations. Weak enforcement of coupling conditions is achiev ...

We study the global well-posedness and asymptotic behavior for a semilinear damped wave equation with Neumann boundary conditions, modeling a one-dimensional linearly elastic body interacting with a rigid substrate through an adhesive material. The key fea ...

In the attempt to reduce fuel consumption, a new generation of Ultra-High-By-Pass-Ratio (UHBR) turbofans have been introduced in the aeronautic industry which are structurally noisier especially at lower frequencies, because of their larger diameter, lower ...

We study the hitting probabilities of the solution to a system of d stochastic heat equations with additive noise subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that for any bounded Borel set with positive (d-6)\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{ ...

We propose a local, non -intrusive model order reduction technique to accurately approximate the solution of coupled multi -component parametrized systems governed by partial differential equations. Our approach is based on the approximation of the boundar ...

Several boreholes were drilled for site comparison of a deep geological repository (DGR) in Northern Switzerland. The main target of the exploration program was the >100m thick Opalinus Clay, the designated host rock encountered at approximately 450 to 100 ...

A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) offers a viable solution to spectrally convert and concentrate both direct and diffuse sunlight without the need for tracking. Its potential for commercialization is currently limited by the optical performance. A det ...

Plasmas with negative triangularity (NT) shape have been recently shown to be able to achieve H-mode levels of confinement in L-mode, avoiding detrimental edge localised modes. Therefore, this plasma geometry is now studied as a possible viable option for ...

Rubble stone masonry is a common construction typology of historical city centres and vernacular architecture. While past earthquakes have shown that it is one of the most vulnerable masonry construction typologies, there are few experimental campaigns giv ...

Water is ubiquitous within the pore space of rocks and has been shown to affect their physical and mechanical behaviour. Indeed, water can act on the rock strength via mechanical (i.e., reducing the effective stresses) or chemical effects (e.g., mineral di ...

This data package supports the publication 'Complexity of crack front geometry enhances toughness of brittle solids' by Xinyue Wei, Chenzhuo Li, Cían McCarthy, and John M. Kolinski Nature physics (2024) - https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-024-02435-x DOI: 1 ...

Surface roughness is a key factor when it comes to friction and wear, as well as to other physical properties. These phenomena are controlled by mechanisms acting at small scales, in which the topography of apparently flat surfaces is revealed. Roughness i ...

Surface-based inflatables are composed of two thin layers of nearly inextensible sheet material joined together along carefully selected fusing curves. During inflation, pressure forces separate the two sheets to maximize the enclosed volume. The fusing c ...

Geotechnical problems with total stress changes occurring rapidly relative to the soil consolidation time can be conveniently addressed using an effective stress-based approach. For saturated states, analytical formulations of pore-pressure coefficients ad ...

Wyoming-type bentonite is one of the materials to be used as part of the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) in deep geological disposal facilities for the safe disposal of spent nuclear fuel.In the KBS-3 type repository, the canisters containing the spent fue ...

Effective properties of materials with random heterogeneous structures are typically determined by homogenising the mechanical quantity of interest in a window of observation. The entire problem setting encompasses the solution of a local PDE and some aver ...

We compute three-term semiclassical asymptotic expansions of counting functions and Riesz-means of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on spheres and hemispheres, for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Specifically for Riesz-means we prove upper ...

Induced seismicity caused by anthropogenic modification of the subsurface effective stress state has been observed in a number of industrial applications -- from hydrocarbon extraction (e.g., Groningen [1]), drilling waste-water disposal (e.g., [2]) to the ...

Permeability measurements of engineering textiles exhibit large variability as no standardization method currently exists; numerical permeability prediction is thus an attractive alternative. It has all advantages of virtual material characterization, incl ...

We consider nonlinear parabolic stochastic PDEs on a bounded Lipschitz domain driven by a Gaussian noise that is white in time and colored in space, with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition. We establish existence, uniqueness and moment bounds of the r ...
