This report takes place in the frame of quantum experimentation. Indeed, the purpose of this project is to pattern quantum structures on a chip where a carbon nanotube device is already deposited. In this specific case, conventional lithography cannot be applied: we therefore explore to what extent stencil lithography can be a solution. Thus, we must determine if it is possible to create stencil masks for quarter wave cavities, transmission lines and four-point probes micropatterning, and what are the dimen

The social design approach presented in this chapter was developed to ensure that the new smart living lab building includes not only sus- tainable environmental and economic aspects, but also social aspects. By better understand- ing the preferences and attitudes of its future occupants and the three founding institutions, the team will be able to successfully incorpo- rate the former in the design process.

Synopsis: Create a fair ranking system for the 2018 FIFA World Cup LCAV20171130 Level: BS, MS Description: Imagine that you are given the scores of all the 32 teams participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and you are asked to rank them based on their performance. Would you agree with the actual standings? The World Cup consists of two stages, a group stage and a play-off round, and the typical approach to choose the teams from the fi

Good icon design is now recognized as crucial in determining user experience with mobile, PC and other applications. However, research examining icon use and processing is based on the use of existing icon sets. This leaves many questions about how new icons can be created with specific characteristics. Based on extensive design research, specific design principles were established. In an experimentally controlled study, a set of 64 icons was then developed by designers applying these design principles to c

This chapter discusses different key issues related to the actual design and implementation of parasitic antenna arrays for the novel beamspace-MIMO concept. The proposed design strategies are illustrated by a concrete operational prototype. The chapter also briefly discusses the possibility of considering realistic antenna elements for practical portable applications as well as the effects of the operating environment on the system performance.

Building acoustic beamformers is a problem whose solution is hindered by the wide-band nature of audible sound. In order to achieve a consistent directional response over a wide range of frequencies, a conventional acoustic beamformer needs a high number of discrete loudspeakers and be large enough to achieve a desired low-frequency performance. The acoustic beamformer design described in this paper uses measurement-based optimized beamforming for loudspeakers mounted on a rigid cylindrical baffle. Super-di

The experiments of Cable-in conduit conductor (CICC) short samples with high proportion of segregated copper strands have been carried out in SULTAN facility last September. These experiments aimed to investigate transient stability and AC losses of CICC conductor coated with different resistive barriers (Pb-30Sn-2Sb or Ni plating on strands) and to check the design of PF and TF CICC for HT-7U magnets. The resistive barriers' influences on the stability and AC losses of CICC are evaluated. These experimenta

A novel MEMS device architecture: the SOI SG-MOSFET, which combines a solid- state MOS transistor and a suspended metal membrane in a unique metal-over- gate architecture, is proposed. A unified physical analytical model (weak, moderate and strong inversions) is developed and used to investigate main electrostatic characteristics in order to provide first-order design criteria for low-voltage operation and high-performance. It is demonstrated that the use of a thin gate oxide (

The reliable evaluation of the performance of watermarking algorithms is difficult. An important aspect in this process is the assessment of the visibility of the watermark. In this paper, we address this issue and propose a methodology for evaluating the visual quality of watermarked video. Using a software tool that measures different types of perceptual video artifacts, we determine the most relevant impairments and design the corresponding objective metrics. We demonstrate their performance through subj

Numerous degrees of freedom are often available for the heat integration of batch processes. Usually, only few of these are actually considered and optimized. Time slice-dependant Tmin have been investigated and optimized using a supertargeting procedure originally developed for multiple base case design. The trade-off direct indirect heat exchanges has also been studied and tools for the preliminary assessment of the heat storage system are proposed. Further improvements are being considered for both t

This paper presents the concept of a standard method used to determine the durability of injection molds. In particular, some Rapid Tooling molds are less resistant to abrasive plastics than conventional steel molds. Some evidence of wear in a conventional mold is given, and a specific mold is designed for this test; polymer materials are defined and the test methodology is outlined. Numerical simulation is utilized to show the areas of the mold subject to high shear stresses.

The design of a diffration grating used as an output coupler for a Fabry-Perot resonator is presented. We then consider the problem of determining the distortion and the cross-polarization of the incident Gaussian beam. Different types of gratings and planes with straight or curvilinear grooves and elliptical, have been designed and built. The output pattern from a resonator using such a grating has been measured experimentally. We found that the elliptical grating generates the least distortion and cross-p
