Perceptual Quality Assessment for Video Watermarking

Résumé

The reliable evaluation of the performance of watermarking algorithms is difficult. An important aspect in this process is the assessment of the visibility of the watermark. In this paper, we address this issue and propose a methodology for evaluating the visual quality of watermarked video. Using a software tool that measures different types of perceptual video artifacts, we determine the most relevant impairments and design the corresponding objective metrics. We demonstrate their performance through subjective experiments on several different watermarking algorithms and video sequences.

Video quality

Video quality is a characteristic of a video passed through a video transmission or processing system that describes perceived video degradation (typically, compared to the original video). Video processing systems may introduce some amount of distortion or artifacts in the video signal that negatively impacts the user's perception of a system. For many stakeholders in video production and distribution, assurance of video quality is an important task. Video quality evaluation is performed to describe the quality of a set of video sequences under study.

Evaluation

In common usage, evaluation is a systematic determination and assessment of a subject's merit, worth and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards. It can assist an organization, program, design, project or any other intervention or initiative to assess any aim, realisable concept/proposal, or any alternative, to help in decision-making; or to ascertain the degree of achievement or value in regard to the aim and objectives and results of any such action that has been completed.

Filigrane

Un filigrane (du latin filum, fil, et granum, grain) est, en orfèvrerie, un ouvrage fait de fils de métal précieux ou de verre, entrelacés et soudés. Dans l'industrie papetière, un filigrane est un dessin qui apparaît sur certains papiers quand on les regarde par transparence. Ce sont de minces fils de métal, en or ou en argent, torsadés ou pas, soudés sur une plaque de métal ou entre eux et laissant des jours, des espaces vides. Le filigrane produit donc un effet de « broderie ».
