Literature on linear induction motors (LIMs) has proposed several approaches to model the behavior of such devices for different applications. In terms of accuracy and fidelity, field analysis-based models are the most relevant. Closed-form or numerical so ...

Solid-State Transformers with Input-Series/Output-Parallel configuration offer a convenient solution for AC/DC conversion due to their scalability and modularity. In this configuration, each module experiences a second-order harmonic ripple caused by local ...

The modern world is heavily reliant on electromagnetic devices to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. These devices are fundamental to powering our society, and the growing need for automated production lines and electrified tr ...

We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

In this work, isogeometric mortaring is used for the simulation of a six-pole permanent magnet synchronous machine. Isogeometric mortaring is especially well suited for the efficient computation of rotating electric machines, as it allows for an exact geom ...

The development of new industrial applications has diverted the focus of research towards compacter and faster rotatory drives. These requirements push the classical ball-bearings of electric motors to the limits in terms of operational lifetime and fricti ...

Modern power distribution systems experience a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). As acknowledged by recent literature, the interaction of individual CIDER components and different CIDERs through the grid ...

This paper presents a semi-analytical homogenization model for Soft Magnetic Composites (SMCs), providing the effective magnetic behavior and the level of Eddy Current (EC) losses. Both linear and nonlinear magnetic behavior are considered. A magnetic circ ...

To meet the electrical grid's demand on pump power variation, GE Renewable Energy develops since 10 years variable speed machines (also called Doubly Fed Induction Generators or DFIG). Within turbogenerators, the phenomenon of circulating currents in Roebe ...

This work studies the level-set based topology optimization for the optimal layout of winding in electric motor. The functional to optimize is to maximize the torque in the air-gap. The coil domain is initiated by a level set function. The time evolutionar ...

The development of new space missions with novel high-performance and very sensitive payloads for Earth observation or scientific missions has imposed considerably tougher requirements in terms of the satellite's pointing accuracy and stability, and thus o ...

The purpose of this paper is to present an experimental method to separate losses components due to the rotation of the rotor in very-high-speed permanent magnet machines with ball bearings. In addition, it presents and validates an analytical model for th ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where the long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed to estimate the position of the rotor. Of ...

Two complementary measurement systems – built upon an autonomous floating craft and a tethered balloon – for lake research and monitoring are presented. The autonomous vehicle was assembled on a catamaran for stability, and is capable of handling a variety ...

Waste heat recovery (WHR) is expected to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions from trucks. Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems show the highest potential for this application, but still lack efficient small-scale expansion devices, in practice. A novel tur ...

This paper proposes a novel full passive magnetic levitation motor without active magnetic suspension. It has a magnetic levitation unit and a motor unit. The Halbach array permanent magnets and a pyrolytic graphite (PG) disk realize the full passive magne ...

To obtain a resilient and flexible DC grid, reliable means for interfacing its parts operating under different voltage levels must be ensured. This paper proposes bidirectional, isolated, DC–DC converter designed to connect either high/medium voltage bipol ...

Structural brain imaging has continuously furthered our knowledge how different pathways of the human motor system contribute to residual motor output in stroke patients. Tract-related microstructure of pathways between primary and premotor areas has been ...

This paper proposes a methodology for computationally-efficient estimation of the local E-field maximums within the transformer winding insulation material for design optimization purposes, where besides the estimation accuracy, the computational cost repr ...

Optimization-based controllers are advanced control systems whose mechanism of determining control inputs requires the solution of a mathematical optimization problem. In this thesis, several contributions related to the computational effort required for o ...
