Self-similar structures occur naturally and have been employed to engineer exotic physical properties. We show that acoustic modes of a fractal-like system of tensioned strings can display increased mechanical quality factors due to the enhancement of diss ...

We introduce an architecture for optical-frequency synthesis using photonic-chip frequency combs and a heterogeneously integrated CW laser. The Kerr dual-comb that we describe offers a microwave-optical link to discipline the laser to an RF clock. ...

We demonstrate an integrated lithium tantalate electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator exhibiting the voltage-length product of 3.7 V·cm and bandwidth of at least 67 GHz. ...

We demonstrate a hydrogen-free low-loss silicon oxide film deposited with SiCl4 and O2 precursor. A very wide low-loss window of 1300 nm to 1620 nm is achieved at deposition temperature as low as 300 ◦C. ...

Superconducting qubits are among the most advanced candidates for achieving fault-tolerant quantum computing. Despite recent significant advancements in the qubit lifetimes, the origin of the loss mechanism for state-of-the-art qubits is still subject to i ...

We demonstrate optical continuous-travelling-wave parametric amplification in a 5.55-cm-long integrated gallium phosphide waveguide, achieving up to 35 dB of gain and significantly surpassing the bandwidth of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. ...

We demonstrate an optomechanical microresonator in which optical and mechanical degrees of freedom exchange energy at a rate exceeding the relevant decoherence rates in the system, enabling quantum control of a mechanical oscillator with light. ...

We demonstrate a photonic-electronic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) offering a record-high acquisition bandwidth of 320 GHz. The system combines a high-speed electro-optic modulator with a Kerr comb for spectrally sliced coherent detection and is used f ...

We experimentally discovered and theoretically explain a novel turnkey regime for operation of soliton microcombs, wherein a new operating point enables the direct access of the soliton state by simple turn-on of the pump laser. (C) 2020 The Author(s) ...

We demonstrate an architecture for massively parallel frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser ranging (LiDAR) by transferring linear chirps of a single narrow linewidth laser onto all soliton comb teeth though generation of a dissipative Kerr soli ...

Photonic integrated circuit optical waveguide device preparation or fabrication method comprising providing a silicon substrate, depositing at least one copper gettering silicon nitride layer or material, depositing at least one optical waveguide cladding ...

Frequency comb generation based on dissipative Kerr solitons (DKS) in microresonators is important for many applications. We show higher order mode suppression in silicon nitride microresonators, that reduces avoided modal crossing to enable DKS generation ...

Interleaving two soliton Kerr combs we generate 179 carriers for WDM transmission and demonstrate transmission of a data stream of 50 Tbit/s over 75 km. This is the highest data rate achieved with a chip-scale comb source. ...

We present optical measurements of the photothermal response of a whispering-gallery silica microresonator in a helium-4 exchange gas cryostat. Using transient-mode numerical simulations, we discuss the various heat propagation mechanisms. (C) 2011 Optical ...

We propose to use the intrinsic two-level system (TLS) defect states found naturally in integrated optomechanical devices for exploring cavity QED-like phenomena with localized phonons. The Jaynes-Cummings-type interaction between TLS and mechanics can rea ...

We demonstrate dissipation dilution engineering techniques for ultralow dissipation mechanical resonators. The Si3N4 nanobeams show quality factors (Q) as high as 800 million and Q x f exceeding 10(15) Hz-both records at room temperature. (C) 2019 The Auth ...

By injecting a soliton microcomb into a semiconductor laser that is driven by a sinusoidal current at the subharmonic frequencies of the soliton rate, we demonstrate broadband gain-switched frequency comb generation and low-noise microwave synthesis. (C) 2 ...

We report the first demonstration of microresonator dark pulse generation by self-injection locking of a DFB laser to a Si3N4 microresonator with normal GVD. The 26 GHz repetition rate beatnote is characterized. (C) 2020 The Author(s) ...
