We demonstrate a hybrid integrated low-noise laser based on a 900 nm laser diode self-injection locked to a microresonator with MEMS actuators exhibiting a frequency actuation bandwidth >10 MHz and a tuning efficiency >30 MHz/V. ...

Structural hierarchy is found in myriad biological systems and has improved man-made structures ranging from the Eiffel tower to optical cavities. In mechanical resonators whose rigidity is provided by static tension, structural hierarchy can reduce the di ...

We develop a framework of using photonic integrated circuits for free-electron quantum optics applications. We formulate the interaction using a three-dimensional QED quantization procedure, and discuss a few fundamental limitations and specific applicatio ...

We demonstrate reconfigurable microwave photonic filters based on two-soliton microcombs. The filter passbands can be reconfigured inherently via the various angles between two solitons of microresonator, without involving programmable pulse shapers. (C) 2 ...

We demonstrate an integrated Erbium-based tunable laser using wafer-scale fabrication and ion implantation of silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits, and achieve single-frequency lasing tunable from 1530 nm to 1575 nm covering the entire optical C-ba ...

Optomechanical resonators provide a route to interconversion of microwave and optical photons for quantum interconnects. We present a platform comprising a GaP photonic crystal cavity integrated on prefabricated niobium circuits, with mechanical modes at s ...

The accessibility of solitons in driven-dissipative photonic dimers drastically varies for different supermode families. We explain the origin of this phenomenon and show its crucial influence on any soliton lattice configuration including topological arra ...

Optical frequency combs provide equidistant frequency markers and have applications that encompass fundamental Physics to Engineering. This tutorial will review the fundamental operational principles and latest development in the field of soliton microreso ...

We demonstrate single-soliton Kerr-comb generators, exploiting photonic wire bonds to connect Si3N4 resonators and self-injection-locked InP pump lasers. The assembly is used to generate a 0.302 THz carrier for 160 Gbit/s wireless transmission over 55 m. ...

Silicon Nitride integrated photonic circuits have drawn much attention owing to its ultra-low loss and large Kerr nonlinearity. However, the lack of Pockels effect makes it difficult to be modulated clectro-optically, which posts a major challenge for the ...

We demonstrate the first spectrally sliced OAWM receiver assembly that combines slicing filters and optical receivers in a hybrid multi-chip module. We prove the viability of the device by receiving a wavelength-division-multiplexed signal over a bandwidth ...

We demonstrate an electro-optically tunable hybrid integrated laser self-injection locked to a mode of a heterogeneously integrated lithium-niobate-on-Damascene-silicon-nitride microresonator. An intrinsic linewidth of 3 kHz and a frequency tuning rate of ...

High-order-dispersion-induced dispersive waves emitted by dissipative Kerr solitons are frequently observed in microresonator frequency comb generation. Also known as soliton Cherenkov radiation, this type of dispersive wave plays a critical role in comb s ...

We demonstrate a compact soliton microcomb light source. The soliton is generated from a Kerr microresonator and amplified by an erbium-implanted gain section integrated on the same photonic chip. We achieved an output power of 7.9 mW at a compact device f ...

At room temperature, mechanical motion driven by the quantum backaction of light has been observed only in pioneering experiments in which an optical restoring force controls the oscillator stiffness1,2. For solid-state mechanical resonators in which oscil ...

Optical absorption and nonlinear index are important performance drivers in devices like microcombs and parametric oscillators. Here we use resonance-enhanced nonlinear spectroscopy to characterize absorption limits and nonlinear index for some integrated ...

We demonstrate ultra-low propagation loss, lithographic precision, and wafer-scale manufacturing for high-density Si3N4 photonic integrated circuits using an efficient DUV-based subtractive approach. We show a propagation loss as low as 1.4 dB/m at 1.55 µm ...

We demonstrate the existence of perfect soliton crystal states and develop the deterministic procedure for their excitation in Si3N4 microresonators. We show that despite exceptional symmetrical properties, their behavior is strongly linked to the chaotic ...

Chip-scale frequency comb sources are likely to become key elements of future terabit/s optical transceivers. We investigate and demonstrate the viability of different comb generation schemes for transmission at multiterabit/s data rates. ...

Integrated microresonators are essential building blocks of linear and nonlinear photonic devices. Here we show that the performance of high-Q silicon nitride microresonators for nonlinear photonics strongly depends on the ideality of their coupler design. ...
