For the realization of fusion as an energy source, the development of suitable materials is one of the most critical issues. The required material properties are in many aspects unique compared to the existing solutions, particularly the need for necessary ...

Acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) spectral data is nowadays common using many different microanalytical techniques. In order to proceed to the 3D reconstruction, data processing is necessary not only to deal with noisy acquisitions but also to segment ...

In this work a combination of advanced transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy techniques enabled a statistically significant analysis of various types of few nanometer size oxides particles in Fe-14Cr-2W-O.3Ti-0.3Y(2)O(3) ferritic steel. These m ...

We present the development of a new algorithm which combines state-of-the-art energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy theory and a suitable machine learning formulation for the hyperspectral unmixing of scanning transmission electron microscope EDX spec ...

The photophysical characterization of three soluble derivatives of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), co-functionalized with PEG and aminofluorene and co-functionalized with PEG and aminoanthracene is re ...

We show a technique that images the intensity distribution and local state of polarization of the optical field of high-quality factor optical modes confined in dielectric planar photonic crystal nanocavities. Based on energy-loss spectroscopy of swift ele ...

We present two open-source Python packages: "electron spectro-microscopy"(espm) and "electron microscopy tables"(emtables). The espm software enables the simulation of scanning transmission electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy datacubes ...

The nature of the liquid-solid interface determines the characteristics of a variety of physical phenomena, including catalysis, electrochemistry, lubrication, and crystal growth. Most of the established models for crystal growth are based on macroscopic t ...

Curvilinear structures frequently appear in microscopy imaging as the object of interest. Crystallographic defects, i.e dislocations, are one of the curvilinear structures that have been repeatedly investigated under transmission electron microscopy (TEM) ...

One of the most challenging strategies to achieve tunable nanophotonic devices is to build robust nanohybrids with variable emission in the visible spectral range, while keeping the merits of pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). This goal is re ...

In situ Laue analysis during microcompression reveals plasticity in [0 0 1]-oriented, directionally solidified Mo alloy pillars to start with slip on the {1 1 2} < 1 1 1 > system having the highest Schmid factor followed by slip on the (1 1 0) plane contai ...

In this work two aspects of momentum-dependent electron energy loss spectrometry are studied, both in the core-loss and in the low-loss region. In the case of core losses, we focus on the demonstration and the interpretation of an unexpected non-Lorentzian ...

Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) mapping with a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is commonly used for chemical characterization of materials. However, STEM-EDXS quantification becomes challenging when the phases constituting the ...

The ability to obtain three-dimensional (3-D) information about morphologies of nanostructures elucidates many interesting properties of materials in both physical and biological sciences. Here we demonstrate a novel method in scanning transmission electro ...

In situ reduction of nickel oxide (NiO) particles is performed under 1.3 mbar of hydrogen gas (H-2) in an environmental transmission electron microscope (ETEM). Images, diffraction patterns and electron energy-loss spectra (EELS) are acquired to monitor th ...

We carried out a series of silicate fractional crystallization experiments at lower mantle pressures using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Phase relations and the compositional evolution of the cotectic melt and equilibrium solids along the liquid lin ...

We analyze the momentum-dependent loss function of bulk silver, calculated via the random-phase approximation and based on the band structure from semi-local density functional theory calculations. In the energy range of 0-55 eV the spectrum reveals the ex ...

Bulk and dispersed cubic liquid crystalline phases (cubosomes), present in the body and in living cell membranes, are believed to play an essential role in biological phenomena. Moreover, their biocompatibility is attractive for nutrient or drug delivery s ...

We performed laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments combined with state-of-the-art electron microanalysis (focused ion beam and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy) to study the distribution and valence of iron in Earth's lower mantl ...

Local measurements of the oxidation state of vanadium in monoclinic BiVO4 particles by means of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy reveal a pronounced surface reduction: within a 5-nm-thick shell, the oxidation s ...
