Planetary formation models show that terrestrial planets are formed by the accretion of tens of Moon-to Mars-sized planetary embryos through energetic giant impacts. However, relics of these large proto-planets are yet to be found. Ureilites are one of the ...

Edge dislocations are frequently found in epitaxial BiFeO3 multiferroic thin films and are expected to exhibit distinctive and localized magnetoelectric properties. However, an exhaustive characterization of these dislocations at the atomic level has to da ...

A method is presented for the quantitative investigation of microstructure and texture evolution in polycrystalline thin films based on in-plane automated crystal orientation mapping in transmission electron microscopy, from the substrate up. To demonstrat ...

The remarkable microstructural stability of high chromium steels prepared by powder metallurgy and strengthened by dispersion of nanometric yttrium oxides in cyclic loading at high temperatures is reported. Contrary to the continuous cyclic softening and p ...

Visible-light emitting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)/organic hybrids have been successfully synthesized and promise to be a photon source to be used in future optoelectronic devices. The nanohybrids are "peapods" having sexithiophene molecules ins ...

If one needs to cancel the effects of the anisotropy of the sample in a EELS experiment in the TEM, a particular couple of values for the collection and convergence angle must be used, called magic angle conditions (MAC). Recent developments in the theory ...

Recently, much attention has been devoted to the development of new pulsed sources of radiation for investigating matter with atomic scale temporal and spatial resolution. While much has been achieved thanks to modern ultrafast laser technology, the ultima ...

The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD)-the equivalent of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in the electron microscope-is optimized with respect to the detector shape, size and position. We show that an import ...

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging using diffraction contrast is a powerful technique to assess crystal defects. In this work it is used to assess the spatial distribution of radiation induced defect in tungsten. In effect, its irradi ...

A growth of grain triplets is identified in vapor deposited, a-texture polycrystalline zinc oxide thin films, using a combination of transmission electron microscopy-based automated crystal orientation mapping and high-resolution imaging. Each triplet cons ...

We present a comparative theoretical and experimental study of dynamic structure factors (momentum-dependent loss functions) of the noble metals Cu, Ag, and Au in the energy range of 0-60 eV. The emphasis is on theoretical results that are compared with ne ...

While lean Mg-Zn-Ca alloys are promising materials for temporary implants, questions remain on the impact of Zn and Ca on the microstructure. In this context, the precipitation of Zn and Ca in Mg-1.5Zn-0.25Ca (in wt.%), initially extruded at 330 & DEG;C, t ...

A novel approach, which is based on the analysis of sequences of images recorded using energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy and can be used to assess the reaction of a solid with a gas at elevated temperature, is illustrated for the reduction o ...

The knowledge of the inelastic double differential scattering cross section (DDSCS) is of utmost importance for microanalysis in electron energy loss spectrometry (EELS) in the electron microscope and for the investigation of electron energy loss near edge ...

Energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectrum imaging yields compositional information with a spatial resolution down to the atomic level. However, experimental limitations often produce extremely sparse and noisy EDX spectra. Under such conditions, every detecte ...

We show the experimental and calculated q-dependent low energy loss electron energy loss spectrum of Ru and Ag. The spectra were calculated within the time-dependent density-functional theory including local-field effects. For Ag, the momentum transfer was ...

Deriving accurate three-dimensional (3-D) structural information of materials at the nanometre level is often crucial for understanding their properties. Tomography in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful technique that provides such inform ...

Imaging of flux vortices in high quality MgB2 single crystals has been successfully performed in a commercial field-emission gun-based transmission electron microscope. In cryo-Lorentz microscopy, the sample quality and the vortex lattice can be monitored ...

Hydrogen atoms introduced into a bulk of rare earth-transition metal compound influence the electronic structure of the material. Additional electrons are expected to change the number of free electrons per volume unit present in the system. Electron energ ...

Transition element dopants (e.g., Y, La) are commonly used as sintering aids in polycrystalline alumina ceramics, which segregate to the grain boundaries and control the grain-boundary mobility. However, due to the extremely thin (
