Sulfur (S) capturing materials working at supercritical water (SCW) conditions need to be designed and developed to overcome issues related with catalyst poisoning during the hydrothermal gasification of wet biomass, an efficient and sustainable technology ...

The facile one-pot synthesis of CeO2-based catalysts has been developed to prepare a relatively large amount of nanopowders with relevant catalytic activity towards CO oxidation. The method consists of a two-steps process carried out in ethylene glycol: in ...

We used thermogravimetric hydrogen reduction and iodometric titration to determine the bulk valence state of cobalt in Co-perovskites containing surface carbonate hydroxide or hydroxyl groups. It could be shown that thermogravimetric hydrogen reduction exp ...

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae is a promising technology offering production of biofuels in a sustainable way. Thanks to the supercritical conditions applied, the recycling of water and nutrients including carbon capture becomes feasible(1-2 ...

Metallic Ni nanopowder (Ni-0) was monitored during 23 h of carburization (2CO + 3Ni(0) - Ni3C + CO2, T = 265 degrees C) using Ni K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis made afterward at room temperature revealed 28 +/- 3% Ni3C amo ...

Like conventional material products, waste is the last stage of the life cycle of engineered nanomaterials, which are then incinerated or stabilized before disposal. However, because of their special physical characteristics, the fate of the thermally trea ...

Macrolitter, especially macroplastics, (> 0.5 cm) negatively impact freshwater ecosystems, where they can be retained along lake shores, riverbanks, floodplains or bed sediments. Long-term and large-scale assessments of macrolitter on riverbanks and lake s ...

Titration experiments using ten reactive probe gases interacting with a Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) sample have been performed in a two-chamber Knudsen flow reactor equipped with molecular-beam modulated mass spectrometric detection. The goal of these ...

This paper presents an experimental study of the impact of toluene on the performance of anode-supported (AS) Ni/YSZ SOFC operating at ∼800 °C, 0.25 A/cm2 fed with H2 and biosyngas. Toluene was added to the fuel stream and its concentration increased from ...

In biomass gasification plants and related research units, on-line analysis of noncondensable compounds (H-2, CO, CO2, CH4, and light hydrocarbons) and condensable compounds (water, tars, etc.) is desired. Long-duration on-line measurements are often a cha ...

Molecularly engineered novel dopant-free hole-transporting materials for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) combined with mixed-perovskite (FAPbI(3))(0.85)(MAPbBr(3))(0.15) (MA: CH3NH3+, FA: NH=CHNH3+) that exhibit an excellent power conversion efficiency of 18 ...

Rare earth elements (REEs) are often referred to as the industrial vitamins and the key drivers of the industry 4.0 revolution. The current global supply chain of REEs for green and high-tech applications with more than 220 metric kilotons per year involve ...

The present invention concerns methods and devices for cultivating coenocytic algae and for producing cellulose, in particular microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). In one embodiment, the algae are grown on a solid substrate immersed in liquid culture medium. ...

Appropriate waste and resource management are essential for a sustainable circular economy with reduced environmental impact. With critical resources, e-waste may serve as indirect raw material. For example, with NdFeB permanent magnets, Neodymium (Nd) and ...

To reduce the CO2 emissions from cement production, Portland cement (PC) is partially replaced by supplementary cementitious materials (SCM). Reactions of SCM with PC during hydration leads to the formation of CSH with more silicon and aluminum than in PC, ...

Continuous catalytic supercritical water gasification (CSCWG; 400 degrees C, 28 MPa) of microalgal biomass (Chlorella vulgaris) was carried out at the microalgae production site of ZHAW in Wadenswil (Switzerland) non-stop over a period of 100 h. Characteri ...

The thermochemical emission of alkali metals from biomass samples and two organic salts was investigated for the first time using a novel combination of a th ermogravi metric analyzer with a jet flow condenser attached to a surface ionization detector. Thi ...

Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS), complemented by a Rotating Disk Diluter (RDD) to a hyphenated RDD-SMPS-ICPMS measuring setup, allow online and simultaneous determination of size distribution ...

The development of new biodegradable plastic materials from renewable sources is a major challenge for plastic industries to provide sustainable alternatives to petroleum plastic. Bio-based plastics are generally obtained from photosynthetic biomass such a ...

This study experimentally analyzes the performance and degradation issues of an anode supported (AS) Ni-YSZ solid oxide fuel cell exposed to thiophene (C4H4S). The impact of this organic sulfur compound on the performance of SOFC Ni-YSZ anodes is reported ...
