Life cycle assessment (LCA) and manufacturing focused life cycle costing are used to evaluate the potential advantages of composites in automotive applications. The life cycle costs and environmental performance of several suitable lightweight polymer comp ...

The poisoning effect by hydrogen chloride (HCl) on state-of-the-art Ni anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) at 750 degrees C is evaluated in either hydrogen or syngas fuel. Experiments are performed on single cells and short stacks and HCl concen ...

Several lines of evidence point to the presence of both, cellulose and chitin as structural constituents of the Chlorella vulgaris cell wall. These biopolymers are favourable building blocks for many sustainable industrial applications for instance as bioc ...

A thermogravimeter (TGA, Mettler-Toledo TGA/SDTA851(e)) was connected to an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES, Varian Liberty 110) using a condensation interface (CI), which transforms gaseous high-boiling-temperature substa ...

The emission of selenium from coal gasification processes can cause harm to the environment and downstream equipment. With upcoming legislation, reliable detection as well as control of such gas species become crucial. This study therefore addresses the de ...

Phytoextraction is an environmentally sound method for cleaning up sites that are contaminated with toxic heavy metals. However, the method has been questioned because it produces a biomass-rich secondary waste containing the extracted metals. Therefore, f ...

The effect of body fluids inorganic species on element-specific dissolution of a Mg-Y-Rare earth elements (RE) alloy was investigated by flow microcapillary plasma mass spectrometry. A new important aspect of this method is the online monitoring of precipi ...

The advent of rare earth elements (REEs) with optoelectronic properties has shifted the technology paradigm from digital to a smart and hybrid world. Their substantial uses also resulted in a large piling up of e-waste. Therefore, e-waste is now a lucrativ ...

Two complementary topics are discussed: (i) the continuous production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and (ii) the measurement of reaction yield by X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). The continuous polyol synthesis of AgNPs in grams amount an ...

The soluble fraction of atmospheric transition metals is particularly associated with health effects such as reactive oxygen species compared to total metals. However, direct measurements of the soluble fraction are restricted to sampling and detection uni ...

Metal azides are highly energetic materials that release a large amount of gas upon detonation. They also release metal particles, generating an aerosol. The most common azide is sodium azide (NaN3), which is used nowadays in car airbags. If the decomposit ...

Cr contamination, generated by system components located upstream a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and responsible for Cr-poisoning induced air electrode performance degradation, must be suppressed by hindering the access of Cr pollutants to the cathode comp ...

Sulphur poisoning of nickel-based solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode catalysts is a well-documented shortcoming, but not yet fully understood. Here, a novel experiment is demonstrated to obtain spectroscopic information at operando conditions, in particula ...

The removal of sulfur compounds in biomass gasification processes is crucial to protect downstream equipment. While conventional sorbent materials can retain H2S, many fail to capture heterocyclic sulfur compounds such as thiophene (C4H4S). This work explo ...

Siloxanes in biogas pose significant challenges to energy systems, leading to operational inefficiencies and increased maintenance costs. This study advances the liquid quench sampling system (LQ) for accurate quantification of siloxanes using gas chromato ...

Microalgae have a significant potential to be a sustainable source of fuel and thus are of interest in the transition to a sustainable energy system, in particular for resource-dependent countries such as Switzerland. Independence of fossil fuels, consider ...

Molecularly engineered weakly conjugated hybrid porphyrin systems are presented as efficient sensitizers for solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells. By incorporating the quinolizino acridine and triazatruxene based unit as the secondary light-harvester as ...

Particle size distribution (PSD) is a relevant property of powdered solid matter since it directly influences the functionality of solid products such as pharmaceutics, cosmetics, abrasives, ceramics, metals, pigments, catalysts, and chemical reactants. Se ...

The quality of recyclable and residual municipal solid waste (MSW) is, among other factors, strongly influenced by the seasonal variation in MSW composition. However, a relatively marginal amount of published data on seasonal MSW composition especially in ...
