Research on irregular stone masonry walls is hampered by the lack of detailed geometrical models of their internal micro-structure, i.e. the shape and size of each stone and its position within the wall. Without such a geometric digital twin of walls teste ...

This paper presents a digital joinery generation method for whole-timber structures using wood-wood connections. The research is based on a collaboration with a local timber company located in a mountain area [1]. In this context, there is a need to explor ...

Automatic joinery has become a common technique for the jointing of beams in timber framing and roofing. It has revived traditional, integrated joints such as mortise and tenon connections. Similarly, but only recently, the automatic fabri- cation of tradi ...

This paper introduces the conceptual design of sustainable timber structures using raw wood. It pre-sents a workflow for systematically generating Nexorades using a tiling method for multi-valence quad subdivided surfaces. The system is designed based on a ...

The dataset contains point clouds from 3D scans, reconstructed 3D data, and statistical data analysis, which are intended as complementary material for the publication "AR-assisted timber drilling with smart retrofitted tools". ...

The present work investigates an innovative class of timber structure with potential applications in roofing, facade and bridge construction, called Timberfabric. The development of Timberfabric structures originates from the approach of harnessing the str ...

Our study presents a set of form-finding procedures to explore curved structures made from interlaced panels. Interlacing introduces a particular coupling between assembly components which has to be formulated along with a pertinent flexible body model. We ...

Augmented reality in additive fabrication is predominantly applied to the manufacturing of structures from regularly shaped materials. Our work however embraces natural heterogeneity, by focusing on the assembly of irregularly shaped elements such as miner ...

The goal of this paper is to derive a structure preserving integrator for geometrically exact beam dynamics, by using a Lie group variational integrator. Both spatial and temporal discretization are implemented in a geometry preserving manner. The resultin ...

Using the Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) technique, a new macroscopic model has recently been introduced to simulate the structural behavior of segmented timber plates. The macro model is based on employing only beam and spring elements, which aims t ...

The research undertaken in the EPFL’s Timber Construction Laboratory aims both to question in depth the relationship between engineering sciences and architectural conception and to expose new facets of this relationship. The IBOIS is firmly integrated in ...

By Interlaced Space Structures (ISS) we mean a coupled system of naturally curved flexible panels/strips interlaced together according to a design pattern. We are looking for a physically-based and efficient form-finding procedure in order to interactively ...

The use of integral mechanical attachments (IMAs) in spatial free-form timber plate structures has been revitalized by the production of engineered boards and recent developments in digital fabrication and computer-aided design. Despite the widespread inte ...

The rise of digital fabrication has increased the use of wood-wood connections inspired by traditional carpentry in modern timber constructions. With recent developments on standard construction systems, the mechanical behavior of such joints for in-plane ...

With the increasing use of automation and computer-aided manufacturing in timber construction, a standardized timber construction system using digitally produced wood-wood connections has recently been developed for basic building components. Its structura ...

Friction welding of wood is a bonding technology that can be used for joining timber elements, and in which the adhesive is formed from thermally modified cell wall material within the substrate during the welding process. In this paper, this principle is ...

Automation is increasingly present in the construction industry, whether at the design, manufacturing or assembly stage. Thanks to new technologies, such as robotics, new ways of designing structural elements can be imagined and implemented. Complex method ...

Automatic joinery has become a common technique for the jointing of beams in timber framing and roofing. It has revived traditional, integral joints such as mortise and tenon connections. Similarly, but only recently, the automatic fabrication of tradition ...

Folded-plate structures provide an efficient design using thin laminated veneer lumber panels. Inspired by Japanese furniture joinery, the multiple tab-and-slot joint was developed for the multi-assembly of timber panels with non-parallel edges without adh ...

Timber plate structures with integral mechanical attachments have been successfully built in the last decades. Previous research has highlighted the influence of these connections in the global behavior of the structures. Double-layered plate shells are on ...
