With recent advances in digital fabrication, innovative wood-wood connections inspired by ancient timber joining techniques have recently been applied to various free-form timber plate structures. This paper focuses on the recently developed double-layered ...

This paper is focused on the structural design of an innovative wood-wood connection designed for a full-scale double-layered timber folded-plate structure: the new Vidy theatre pavilion (Lausanne, Switzerland). Investigations into the potential of these n ...

Recent investigations on friction welded wood-to-wood connections have shown interesting capacities of these adhesive free joints for further development towards constructional elements. This paper addresses challenges and technical requirements for the en ...

Experimental data related to the paper: "Experimental investigations on the load-carrying capacity of digitally produced wood-wood connections". It presents shear and compression test results for the load-carrying capacity of digitally produced traditional ...

Timberfabric structures, developed at IBOIS, are a new family of timber constructions based on the logic and principles of man-made fabrics. Modular elements called “Timberfabric Modules” are generated by curving and connecting two thin wooden panels. This ...

Researchers in Asia have focused on analyzing the rotational performance of traditional connections based on embedment. The Nuki through-joint has inspired work at the laboratory of wood construction (IBOIS), Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, to im ...

The widely available automated prefabrication in timber construction companies, as well as modern CAD software with application programing interfaces, allow for the design and production of increasingly geometrically complex building components. This devel ...

This paper focuses on multiple tab-and-slot joints (MTSJ) for load-carrying assembly of structural wood elements, which are inspired by traditional cabinetmaking joints and adapted for automatic fabrication and engineered wood panels such as laminated vene ...

Practical and material orientated academic research has become increasingly important for architectural practice, due to several factors. First, it contributes to contemporary concepts in architecture and improves their implementation. Today’s architects a ...

This research investigates the robotic assembly of timber structures connected by wood–wood connections. As the digitization of the timber construction sector progresses, digital tools, such as industrial robotic arms and Computer Numerical Control machine ...

This presentation presents our reserach into the design and potential applications of CNC fabricated snap-fit joints for cross-laminated veneer lumber panels (LVL). These joints are new to the building construction sector, but commonly used in other domain ...

This article describes the first full-scale realization of a double-layered, folded plate structure (DLFP), for a new hall for the Théâtre Vidy Lausanne. (Fig. 1). Enabled by a novel double-tenon connection technology, the shape of the components simultane ...

This paper presents an integrated raw-wood fabrication workflow using an industrial robot arm and a laser scanner. The research is situated in a Swiss mountain forestry context where timber in its natural form could be applied locally without relying on la ...

Nous présentons un modèle itératif inspiré du modèle CIFS (Controlled Iterative Function System) de PRUSINKIEWICZ [PH94] - encore appelé RIFS (Recurrent Iterative Function System) par BARNSLEY ou MRIFS (Mutually Recursive Iterative Function System) par CUL ...

Wooden shingles have long been used as a vernacular roofing technique in many well-wooded areas. Despite the fact that shingles, as local raw materials, are low in embodied energy, nowadays they are not much used in construction, as the specific craft know ...
