An interesting feature of light fields is a phase anomaly, which occurs on the optical axis when light is converging as in a focal spot. Since in Talbot images the light is periodically confined in both transverse and axial directions, it remains an open q ...

A 1D photonic crystal structure sustaining optical surface waves is investigated. The propagation length of the surface mode is studied both using an eigenmode model and a rigorous time domain solver. The two models show good convergence. Our results demon ...

We experimentally engineer Nanojets produced by dielectric spheres by varying the illumination and observe the effect with a high-resolution interference microscope (HRIM). Converging and diverging spherical wavefronts and Bessel- Gauss beams are considere ...

We study and demonstrate a Bloch-surface-wave-based nano-thin waveguide grating. The waveguide grating is characterized as a Bragg mirror at telecommunication wavelengths. The structure is a dielectric multilayer platform designed to sustain a Bloch surfac ...

When properly designed, a dielectric multilayer can sustain Bloch surface waves (BSWs). Using a multiheterodyne scanning near-field optical microscope that resolves phase and polarization, we will show that a thin dielectric structure deposited on the mult ...

We present a portable microsystem to quantitatively detect cocaine in human saliva. The chip combines a simple microfluidic method for multiphase liquid-liquid extraction to transfer cocaine from IR-light absorbing saliva to an IRtransparent solvent with t ...

High capacity data storage on DVD and optical discs is based on focused light beams. The characterization of light fields within the focus point is a very difficult task, which requires a high-resolution method like scanning near field optical microscopy ( ...

We investigate a measurement technique based on High Resolution Interference Microscopy (HRIM). HRIM allows the characterization of amplitude and phase of electromagnetic wave-fields in the far-field with a spatial accuracy that corresponds to a few nanome ...

A design method to generate thin micro-optical freeform (MOF) beam shapers by clipping or wrapping an original and much thicker freeform surface is provided. MOF elements are situated at the border between refractive and diffractive optical elements. The i ...

We investigate in real space amplitude and phase distributions of light in photonic nanojets emerging from micrometer-sized dielectric spheres with a high-resolution interference microscope. Strong localization of light and a Gouy phase anomaly are witness ...

The non-diverging feature of the Bessel-kind beam leads to multiple phase anomalies along the optical axis in contrary to the focused Gaussian beam. Here, we analyze the phase distributions using in a longitudinal-differential phase mode of a high-resoluti ...

We present a study of the dynamics of protein aggregation using a Bloch surface wave (BSW) label-free sensing scheme. In a previous work, we demonstrated the ability to detect the early dynamic events of fibrillogenesis of amyloid beta-peptides (A beta), l ...

We propose a novel method for the design of binary 2-level diffractive optical elements that provide an efficient diffractive function while reducing the reflectivity of a high-index interface. The structure can be fabricated with a single patterning step ...

We present the simulation, fabrication, and characterization of a metallic slot grating on a silicon waveguide (30nm slot width for a period of 500nm). According to the simulation, the experimental measured spectrum of the structure exhibits a dip in the n ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are electromagnetic surface waves excited in the band gap of a one dimensional dielectric photonic crystal. They are confined at the interface of two media. Due to the use of dielectric material, the losses are very low, which al ...

Microsized spheres can focus light into subwavelength spatial domains, a phenomenon called photonic nanojet. Even though well studied in three-dimensional (3D) configurations, only a few attempts have been reported to observe similar phenomena in two-dimen ...

We present an experimental method to study field structures of highly confined light after interaction with microstructures. A high-resolution interference microscope (HRIM) allows us to measure the three-dimensional (3D) amplitude and phase distributions ...

We report on advanced 3D direct imaging of light fields emerging from a photonic nanojet. We used an interference microscope that allows observation of amplitude and phase at the highest resolution. For the first time cross polarization interferometry is u ...

We introduce a limit for the strength of coupling light into the modes of solar cells. This limit depends on both a cell’s thickness and its modal properties. For a cell with refractive index n and thickness d, we obtain a maximal coupling rate of $2c\sqrt ...

A high-power LED-based illumination system has been developed as a replacement for the mercury arc lamps used in mask-aligner lithography. LEDs are arranged in a grid array and placed in the entrance aperture of individual reflectors. Those reflectors decr ...
