We report on the light confinement effect observed in non-ideally shaped (i.e., non-spherical) nanoscale solid immersion lenses (SILs). To investigate this effect, nanostructures of various shapes are fabricated by electron-beam lithography. When completel ...

We investigate the influence of patterned metallic back reflector on absorption in thinfilm silicon photovoltaics. The impact of symmetry, periodicity, and angle of incidence of light is discussed by simulation and experiment. ...

We present an aspheric collimating lens for mid-infrared (4-14 µ) quantum cascade lasers. The lenses were etched into silicon by an inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching system on wafer level. The high refractive index of silicon reduces the heig ...

We experimentally demonstrate the optical properties of gratings engraved in a single-mode waveguide fabricated on top of a dielectric multilayer platform. The structure can be approached as a reflector for Bloch-surface-wavebased two-dimensional optical s ...

We revisit the scaling laws in micro-optical systems to highlight new phenomena arising beyond a conventional optical regime, especially when the size of the system approaches to the operational wavelength. Our goal is to visualize the impact of the scalin ...

We study the optical properties of two different metallic nanostructure arrays for lable-free sensing applications. The sensors are optimized to detect refractive index (RI) variations. The optical interaction between light and analyte is enhanced by field ...

With help of liquid crystal polymers (LCP) a polarization sensitive diffuser has been realized. By using convex microstructures made of LCP and an index matching layer, two distinct functions depending on the orientation of the device and the polarization ...

We present a study of the dynamics of protein aggregation using a common path heterodyne Bloch surface wave label-free sensing scheme. We demonstrate the ability to detect, during thermal incubation, the first early dynamics events of protein aggregation a ...

Miniaturized optical systems show often unconventional responses compare to larger systems of the same design. We investigate such new phenomena using microlenses, and demonstrate characteristics beyond the refraction limit of the micro-optical systems. ...

Certain high power laser applications require thin homogeneous laser lines. In this paper we describe the concept, fabrication and characterization of a 1-D diffuser that generates such a line. The device is based on an array of concave cylinder lenses wit ...

We present a different type of electromagnetic surface wave than a surface plasmon polariton (SPP), called Bloch surface wave (BSW). BSWs are sustained by dielectric multilayers, and therefore they do not suffer from dissipation. Their propagation length i ...

We report on the application of a silicon micromachined lamellar grating interferometer in a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer for the detection of gases in the mid-infrared (MIR) region. The FTIR spectrometer was equipped with MIR optical fib ...

The experimental study of a gold slot waveguide cavity is presented. The resonance of this cavity working in the telecom wavelength range is highly dependent on the refractive index of the medium located in or around the slots array, because of the high co ...

Strong nonlinear, electro-optical, and thermo-optical properties of lithium niobate (LN) have gained much attention. However, the implementation of LiNbO3 in real devices is not a trivial task due to difficulties in manufacturing and handling thin-film LN. ...

Nano-photonics, where optical structures can manipulate light at the sub-wavelength scale, is making important advances towards optical communications, imaging and sensing. A novel platform suitable for fundamental investigations of light propagation throu ...

Superprism-based deflection of an optical beam is observed in a photonic crystal composed of a triangular lattice of pillars infiltrated with a liquid crystal. The device is based on a Silicon-on-insulator substrate and operates in the telecommunications b ...

We present results of numerical simulations and preliminary experiments to investigate and characterize the effect of asymmetrical coupling of normally incident light to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on metallic blazed gratings. Two types of blazed gra ...

Photonic Nanojets are highly localized wave fields emerging directly behind dielectric microspheres; if suitably illuminated. In this contribution we reveal how different illumination conditions can be used to engineer the photonic Nanojets by measuring th ...

We present the innovative application of a Bloch surface wave based sensor to the detection of protein aggregation. In Hen Egg White Lysozyme (HEWL) solutions, aggregates are discriminated from the monomeric forms in a label-free detection scheme. ...

A subwavelength-scale square lattice optical nanostructure is fabricated using an interference photolithography process on the surface of a quartz microlens array. This nanostructuring of the quartz surface introduces an antireflective effect, reducing ref ...
