The present invention relates to a compound of the general formula (I), (II) and (III), more specifically of formula (Ia), (Ib), (Ic)wherein R11 and R12 or R21 and R22 or R31 and R32 are both hydrogen or form together with CHR50 a cyclic moiety or one of R ...

Lignin hydrogenolysis is a key step in the sustainable production of renewable bio-based chemicals and fuels. Heterogeneous metal catalysts have led to high yields but they rapidly deactivate, notably due to nanoparticle sintering and carbonaceous deposit ...

Solvent selection is a difficult task for lignin-first biorefineries and lignin upgrading as the solvent must satisfy multiple complex technical requirements, while remaining extremely stable to allow recycling. High lignin solubility is a common selection ...

Lignin has emerged as an attractive alternative in the search for more eco-friendly and less costly materials for enzyme immobilization. In this work, the terephthalic aldehyde-stabilization of lignin is carried out during its extraction to develop a serie ...

Thanks to chemical stabilization, aldehyde-assisted fractionation (AAF) of lignocellulosic biomass has recently emerged as a powerful tool for the production of largely uncondensed lignin. Depolymerization of AAF lignin via ether deavage provides aromatic ...

Ni/Al2O3 is an active catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to both CH4 and CO. By doping with Ga, we succeeded in shifting the selectivity of these catalysts almost completely toward CO. In-situ IR spectroscopy studies showed that the catalyst activity is direc ...

Industrial lignin oxidation has been used for vanillin production but is largely uncontrolled, not fully understood mechanistically, and leads to low yield. Here, we have demonstrated high-efficiency vanillin and syringaldehyde production from lignin via g ...

Accurately assessing the interfacial composition and reactivity of (bio)polymers under controlled but environmentally relevant conditions remains challenging. This study explores the evolution of surface functionalities of novel polyesters Poly(Butylene Xy ...

The present invention relates to a method for preparing an at least partially acetal-protected sugar involving the step of reacting a sugar or a sugar derivative selected from the group consisting of an aldopentose, an aldohexose, an aldopentoside and an a ...

Lignin, a major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass, is the largest natural source of aromatic molecules and thus is an attractive feedstock for renewable chemical production. Direct incorporation of isolated lignin into materials has long been research ...

Practical, high-yield lignin depolymerization methods could greatly increase biorefinery productivity and profitability. However, development of these methods is limited by the presence of interunit carbon-carbon bonds within native lignin, and further by ...

Transforming lignocellulosic biomass into fuels and chemicals has been intensely studied in recent years. A large amount of work has been dedicated to finding suitable solvent systems, which can improve the transformation of biomass into value-added chemic ...

Aminated derivatives of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural are critical intermediates for the pharmaceutical industry. The state-of-the-art catalysts currently used for these syntheses are mostly homogeneous in nature, motivating the design of recy ...

Introducing oligomeric or polymeric units into metal- organic frameworks (MOFs) can result in composites that have significantly improved properties when compared with the individual MOF or polymer building blocks. With such synergy in mind, this work pres ...

Heterogeneous catalysis has long been a workhorse for the chemical industry and will likely play a key role in the emerging area of renewable chemistry. However, renewable molecule streams pose unique challenges for heterogeneous catalysis due to their hig ...

Realistically replacing petroleum-based plastics will require efficient routes to performance polymers using scalable processes from abundantly available lignocellulosic biomass. We surveyed academic and patent literature for processes in the latest stages ...

The use of metal oxide overcoats over supported nanoparticle catalysts has recently led to impressive improvements in catalyst stability and selectivity. The deposition of alumina is especially important for renewable catalysis due to its robustness in liq ...

The acetate fraction is the fourth most abundant fraction by weight in many plant species and can be easily extracted as acetic acid in high yields. We have previously shown that acetic acid obtained from steam pretreated beech wood could be upgraded in a ...

The difficulty of synthesizing uniform atomically precise active sites limits our ability to engineer increasingly more active heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. Here we design Cu/ZrOx clusters on MgO with near atomic precisi ...

In the continuously developing field of lignocellulosic biomass, high-yield lignin depolymerization processes are sought to optimize its productivity and profitability. Recently, formaldehyde stabilization during lignin extraction and biomass pretreatment ...
