Hydrogenolysis has emerged as one of the most effective means of converting polymeric lignin into monoaromatic fragments of value. Reported yields may be higher than for other methods and can exceed the theoretical yields estimated from measures of the con ...

Advances in the synthetic control of surface nanostructures could improve the activity, selectivity and stability of heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we present a technique for the controlled deposition of TiO2 overcoats based on non-hydrolytic sol-gel chemi ...

Glucuronoyl esterases (GEs) catalyze cleavage of ester linkages between lignin and hemicellulose. This study investigates the role of GEs in the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass in combination with a minimal set of monocomponent cellulases (endo-1,4-g ...

The reverse water gas shift reaction is considered to be a highly attractive catalytic route for CO2 recycling in a future sustainable economy. Copperbased catalysts are commonly used for this reaction due to their high activity and selectivity. However, t ...

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a well‐established vapor‐phase technique for depositing thin films with high conformality and atomically precise control over thickness. Its industrial development has been largely confined to wafers and low‐surface‐area ma ...

An efficient adsorbent for butadiene was synthesized via soft hydrothermal treatment (2 h in boiling water followed by 1 h calcination at 573 K) of industrial Na-X. The adsorption capacity of the zeolite was studied in the low concentration range (20–300 p ...

The surface of a material is not only a window into its bulk physical properties, but also hosts unique phenomena important for understanding the properties of a solid as a whole. Surface sensitive techniques, like ARPES (Angle-resolved photoemission spect ...

Cu-Al spinet oxide is a highly active catalyst for CO2 conversion to CO. However, it suffers from low surface area. By depositing a silica layer, we protected the catalyst surface and preserved the Cu2+ ions during the calcination process. These ions form ...

Aqueous effluent treatment system (2) including a separation reactor (4) having a reactor chamber fluidly connected to an aqueous effluent source (3), connected via a pump (5) to an inlet (34) of the reactor chamber, a fluid extraction system (6) connected ...

We investigate solvent effects in the hydrodeoxygenation of 4-propylguaiacol (4PG, 166 amu), a key lignin-derived monomer, over Ru/C catalyst by combined operando synchrotron photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics s ...

Carbon-carbon bonds, ubiquitous in lignin, limit monomer yields from current depolymerization strategies, which mainly target C-O bonds. Selective cleavage of the inherently inert sigma-type C-C bonds without pre-functionalization remains challenging. Here ...

Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cell (HEMFC) is a potentially cost-effective energy conversion technology. However, current state-of-the-art HEMFCs require a high loading of platinum-group-metal (PGM) catalysts, especially for the hydrogen oxidation react ...

We explore the selective electrocatalytic hydrogenation of lignin monomers to methoxylated chemicals, of particular interest, when powered by renewable electricity. Prior studies, while advancing the field rapidly, have so far lacked the needed selectivity ...

Here, we introduce a method for the synthesis of atomically precise, supported, multiatom catalysts by liquid-phase atomic layer deposition. This technique is based on consecutive grafting reactions in mild conditions that build supported active sites atom ...

There are several methods to isolate near-native lignins, including milled-wood lignin, enzymatic lignin, cellulolytic enzyme lignin, and enzymatic mild-acidolysis lignin. Which one is the most representative of the native lignin? Herein, near-native ligni ...

The present invention relates to Use of a compound of the general formula (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V) or (VI) wherein R1 and R1', R21 and R21', R31 and R31' are the same and are hydrogen, a linear or branched C1 to C18 alkyl, a linear or branched C2 to C18 ...

Existing lignocellulosic biomass fractionation processes produce lignin with random, interunit C-C bonds that inhibit its depolymerization and constrain its use. Here, we exploit the aldehyde stabilization of lignin to tailor its structure, functionality, ...

H-ZSM-5 zeolite has been shown to be an active catalyst for the synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OME). However, we demonstrated – by passivation of the zeolite's external surface – that the reaction rate is limited due to severe internal diff ...

The cleavage of β-O-4 linkages in lignin can generate monomers with a phenyl propane structure that can easily be upgraded into valuable hydrocarbon biofuels and renewable aromatic chemicals. High-yield lignin monomer production from extracted (or technica ...
