This paper presents the new open-source statistical software package for inertial sensor calibration. This platform is based on the Generalized Method of Wavelet Moments that was recently proposed to estimate simple and composite stochastic models that are ...

We present AddLiDAR, an online processing portal and open-data repository designed to expose ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) datasets from raw sensor output at all processing levels to the broader research community. The system provides an integrated infrastructure, providing a backend processing engine, web map data-set navigation portal, and an interactive 3D viewer, data filtering interface and configurable data download facilities. The portal is designed to maximise compliance with the FAIR principles (Fi

Moisture content in the soil and snow in the alpine environment is an important factor, not only for environmentally oriented research, but also for decision making in agriculture and hazard management. Current observation techniques quantifying soil moist ...

The main objective of this research is in automating the initialization phase of the MEMS-IMZ/GPS data integration. The motivation for this study is the special case where the before mentioned sensors are worn on a body (e.g. of an athlete) and where the u ...

In this paper, a GPS-independent mobile navigation and mapping system is introduced. This system employs the photogrammetric intersection to determine the coordinates of the surrounding objects and then it uses these newly known objects to compute its own position, when it moves, by the photogrammetric resection.

The applications to dynamic sports for an accurate analysis of trajectories represent a new perspective for carrier phase-based GPS positioning. Introduced in competitive skiing, the GPS technique provide all the qualitative data for a complete analysis of position/velocity/acceleration so that the measured trajectories can be compared throughout the entire track.

Camera calibration refers to the modeling of the relationship between the coordinates of object points and their projections on the image plane. This is usually done by parametric models that describe the physical properties of the lens systems and camera ...

This paper presents a self-contained, light and flexible mapping system that can be quickly deployed into inaccessible areas. Although designed to measure wind-transported snow volumes and the avalanche mass balance over an experimental site, the system is suitable to any large-scale 3-D terrain mapping.

This report studies a practical problem related to the use of GPS/INS technology for sensor direct georeferencing. It is a case study of a specific, yet typical, situation whre the performance of a GPS/INS was pronounced unsatisfactory for orientation of an airborne sensor. However, it was in fact not the poor quality of the navigation data but rather numerous disregards occurring in the flight execution and data treatment that have led to this wrong conclusion. The presented analysis reveals the errors com

This article discusses the problem of time registration between navigation and imaging components on Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). Accurate mapping with MAVs is gaining importance in applications such as corridor mapping, road and pipeline inspections or m ...

Though the ISPRS has had standardization on its agenda for a long time the progress was slow and the output of completed document is still limited. The reasons are manifold: lack of awareness of standardization, necessary alignment with the standardization ...

This paper presents an experimental procedure for aerodynamic characterization of a delta-wing UAV for model-based navigation applications. We report the design of experiments, aimed to maximize aerodynamic coefficients observability while meeting time constraints requirements, as well as the significance of secondary aerodynamic influences. A functional model, simple yet accurate, is derived from the experiments. We evaluate it empirically in-flight with an offline-implemented navigation solution during GN

Downhill skiers enter a different dimension on the racecourse, but they are still subject to the laws of physics. A new Swiss system integrates GPS, video, and biosensors for precise position, velocity and heart-rate measurement, helping coaches and athletes plot the best "line" and improve training procedures - while enhancing television broadcasts.

The Springer Handbook of Geographic Information is organized in thre parts, Basics, Geographic Information and Applications. Some parts of the basics belong to the larger field of computer science. However, the reader gets a comprehensive view on geographic information because the topics selected from computer science have a close relation to geographic information. This chapter belongs to Part B of the book that addresses all geographic information topics that primarily are more specific to space and time.

This paper presents a new concept for simultaneous modeling and adjusting of raw inertial observations with optical and (if available) GNSS data streams. The presented post-mission procedure of dynamic networks allows treating dynamic (e.g. inertial) and s ...

This paper presents the conceptual and technical aspects of a system in development that precisely determines athlete's trajectory through a course. Carrier phase-based (CP-DGPS) positioning represents core of the system, while tri-acial accelerometer and magnetic sensors act as an autonomous aid that offers instantaneous attitude determination and can potentially help when navigating through GPS signal blackout zones.

This work focuses on the stochastic properties of boresight determination between a strapdown IMU and a frame-based imaging sensor. The core of the stochastic model is a rigorous error propagation of the estimated input accuracies and their correlations.
