AddLiDAR: An Online Airborne Laser Scanning Processing Portal and Data Repository

Résumé

We present AddLiDAR, an online processing portal and open-data repository designed to expose ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) datasets from raw sensor output at all processing levels to the broader research community. The system provides an integrated infrastructure, providing a backend processing engine, web map data-set navigation portal, and an interactive 3D viewer, data filtering interface and configurable data download facilities. The portal is designed to maximise compliance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), supporting transparent education and research in downstream applications from sensor calibration to environmental monitoring and information extraction tasks.

3D scanning

3D scanner is the process of analyzing a real-world object or environment to collect three dimensional data of its shape and possibly its appearance (e.g. color). The collected data can then be used to construct digital 3D models. A 3D scanner can be based on many different technologies, each with its own limitations, advantages and costs. Many limitations in the kind of objects that can be digitised are still present. For example, optical technology may encounter many difficulties with dark, shiny, reflective or transparent objects.

Sensor fusion

Sensor fusion is the process of combining sensor data or data derived from disparate sources such that the resulting information has less uncertainty than would be possible when these sources were used individually. For instance, one could potentially obtain a more accurate location estimate of an indoor object by combining multiple data sources such as video cameras and WiFi localization signals.
