Photostimulable phosphor CsBr:Eu2+ is prepared through a solid-state reaction. The effect of annealing atmosphere on photoluminescence and photostimulated luminescence was investigated. Optimum luminescence intensity was obtained when samples were prepared ...

We use stochastic simulation techniques to sample the conformational space of linear semiflexible polymers in a crowded medium and study how the knotting properties depend on the crowder size and concentration. The abundance of physical knots in the chains ...

We report the investigation of the mechanical properties of different types of amyloid fibrils by the peak force quantitative nanomechanical (PF-QNM) technique. We demonstrate that this technique correctly measures the Young's modulus independent of the polymorphic state and the cross-sectional structural details of the fibrils, and we show that values for amyloid fibrils assembled from heptapeptides, α-synuclein, Aβ(1-42), insulin, β-lactoglobulin, lysozyme, ovalbumin, Tau protein and bovine serum albumin

Contactin-4 (CNTN4) is a complex cell adhesion molecule (CAM) localized at neuronal membranes, playing a key role in maintaining the mechanical integrity and signaling properties of the synapse. CNTN4 consists of six immunoglobulin C2 type (IgC2) domains a ...

The first single molecule fluorescence resonant energy transfer scanning near-field optical microscope (FRET SNOM) images of CdSe nanocrystal (donor) deposited onto the glass slide surface are presented. Images were obtained using the earlier proposed FRET ...

The atomic force microscope is a widely used surface scanning apparatus capable of reconstructing at a nanometric scale resolution the 3D morphology of biological samples. Due to its unique sensitivity, it is now increasingly used as a force sensor, to characterize the mechanical properties of specimens with a similar lateral resolution. This unique capability has produced, in the last years, a vast increase in the number of groups that have exploited the versatility and sensitivity of the instrument to exp

The fluorescence resonance energy-transfer (FRET) process was studied between donor dye mols. deposited on the sample surface and acceptor dye mols. deposited on the tips of scanning near-field and at. force microscopes. The FRET process was obsd. only when the tip acquired contact with the sample and took place in regions of sizes of only a few tens of nanometers with only a few thousands (or even hundreds) of mols. involved. The dependence of the FRET intensity on the tip-sample acting force is recorded a

Bacterial chromosome has a compact structure that dynamically changes its shape in response to bacterial growth rate and growth phase. Determining how chromatin remains accessible to DNA binding proteins, and transcription machinery is crucial to understan ...

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) was obsd. between donor dye mols. deposited onto the sample surface and acceptor dye mols. deposited onto the scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) or at. force microscope tip. FRET was obsd. only when the tip acquired a contact with the sample and took place in a region of few tens of square nanometers in size when thousands (hundreds) of mols. are involved. In view of the obtained results, the perspectives for the construction of a 1-atom FRET SNOM are

In recent years, the coevolution of microorganisms with current antibiotics has increased the mechanisms of bacterial resistance, generating a major health problem worldwide. Bordetella pertussis is a bacterium that causes whooping cough and is capable of ...

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely used in consumer products for disinfection purposes. QACs are frequently detected in aquatic systems at sub-inhibitory concentrations and were found to affect the development of antimicrobial resistance if ba ...

The widespread misuse of drugs has increased the number of multiresistant bacteria1, and this means that tools that can rapidly detect and characterize bacterial response to antibiotics are much needed in the management of infections. Various techniques, s ...

We study the behavior of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) in the presence of well-known drugs with either an intercalating binding mode, such as daunorubicin, actinomycin D, and chloroquine, or a minor groove binding mode, such as netropsin and berenil, by atom ...

In both eukaryotic and prokaryotic DNA sequences of 30-100 base-pairs rich in AT base-pairs have been identified at which the double helix preferentially unwinds. Such DNA unwinding elements are commonly associated with origins for DNA replication and tran ...

Changes in mechanical properties of the cytoplasm have been implicated in cell motility, but there is little information about these properties in specific regions of the cell at specific stages of the cell migration process. Fish epidermal keratocytes wit ...

We report the first use of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) optical fiber-made probes for scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). The sharp tips were prepared by chemical etching of the fibers in ethyl acetate, and the probes were prepared by proper gl ...

We address the general question of the extent to which the hydrodynamic behaviour of microscopic freely fluctuating objects can be reproduced by macrosopic rigid objects. In particular, we compare the sedimentation speeds of knotted DNA molecules undergoin ...
