DNA is the bio-polymer containing the genetic information needed for the development and functioning for all living organisms. It has a polymeric structure consisting of units called nucleotides, each consisting of a non-polar, hydrophobic interior (the ba ...

The determination of the characteristics of micro-organisms in clinical specimens is essential for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of infections. A thorough investigation of the nanoscale properties of bacteria can prove to be a fundamental tool. Indeed, ...

ELISA and Western blot immunochemical data attest an effective and highly specific interaction of the surface glycoprotein E domain II (DII) of the tick born encephalitis and Dengue viruses with the laminin binding protein (LBP). Based on a highly conserva ...

In bacteria, nucleoid associated proteins (NAPs) take part in active chromosome organization by supercoil management, three-dimensional DNA looping and direct transcriptional control. Mycobacterial integration host factor (mIHF, rv1388) is a NAP restricted ...

The combination of ring closure and spatial constraints has a fundamental effect on the statistics of semiflexible polymers such as DNA. However, studies of the interplay between circularity and constraints are scarce and single-molecule experimental data ...

We present an optical method of study of nanoparticle properties using photonic crystal surface waves. Palladium nanoparticles were deposited on a surface of a one-dimensional photonic crystal, which supports the propagation of p-polarized optical surface ...

Our team recently demonstrated that cantilever based devices can detect signature of life in a chemistry independent manner. In this technique, the organism of interest is attached onto a classical AFM cantilever. If alive, it induces nanometre scale oscil ...

We study the dynamics of knotted deformable closed chains sedimenting in a viscous fluid. We show experimentally that trefoil and other torus knots often attain a remarkably regular horizontal toroidal structure while sedimenting, with a number of intertwi ...

Nowadays, sharpened glass fiber - made probes attached to a quartz tuning fork (TF) and exploiting the shear force - based feedback are by far the most popular in the field of SNOM. These probes are expensive, very fragile and their fabrication is difficul ...

Currently, sensors invade into our everyday life to bring higher life standards, excellent medical diagnostic and efficient security. Plasmonic biosensors demonstrate an outstanding performance ranking themselves among best candidates for different applica ...

Stiffness tomography is a new atomic force microscopy imaging technique that allows highlighting structures located underneath the surface of the sample. In this imaging mode, such structures are identified by investigating their mechanical properties. We ...

The antigen-presenting cell-expressed CD40 is implied in the regulation of counteractive immune responses such as induction of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-12 and IL-10, respectively. The mechanism of this duality in CD ...

Cancer is a major health issue that absorbs the attention of a large part of the biomedical research. Intercalating agents bind to DNA molecules and can inhibit their synthesis and transcription; thus, they are increasingly used as drugs to fight cancer. I ...

Results of the single molecule force spectroscopy study of specific interactions between ribonuclease barnase and its inhibitor barstar are presented. Experimental data obtained for the force loading rate ranging 2-70 nN/s are well approximated by a single ...

The natural enzymes involved in regulating many of the posttranslational modifications (PTMs) within the first 17 residues (Nt17) of Huntingtin exon1 (Httex1) remain unknown. A semisynthetic strategy that allows the site-specific introduction of PTMs withi ...

The Bell-Evans model which predicts the linear dependence of the most probable intermolecular bond rupture force on the logarithm of stretching force loading rate is usually used to discuss the dynamic force spectroscopy experiment data. This model is cons ...

The conformation of circular DNA molecules of various lengths adsorbed in a 2D conformation on a mica surface is studied. The results confirm the conjecture that the critical exponent ν is topologically invariant and equal to the self-avoiding walk value ( ...

Plasmonic nanoantennas offer new applications in mid-infrared (mid-IR) absorption spectroscopy with ultrasensitive detection of structural signatures of biomolecules, such as proteins, due to their strong resonant near-fields. The amide I fingerprint of a ...

Few examples of sub nanometer resolution on biomolecules can be found in literature. In particular, AFM experiments on DNA mostly fail to show the double helical groove periodicity, and so far such a feat was only achieved in liquid. Here we describe a met ...
