Many approaches have been developed to characterize the heterogeneity of membranes in living cells. In this study, the elastic properties of specific membrane domains in living cells are characterized by atomic force microscopy. Our data reveal the existen ...

Protein nanofibrils were first discovered in the context of misfolding and neurodegenerative diseases but have recently been found in naturally occurring functional materials including algal adhesives, bacterial coatings, and even mammalian melanosomes. Th ...

Fluorescent dyes are widely used for staining and visualization of DNA in optical microscopy based methods. Even though for some dyes the mechanism of binding is known, how this binding affects DNA remains poorly understood. Here we present a novel experim ...

DNA adopts different conformations based on its environment. We reveal conditions that either preserve the DNA's physiological B-conformation, even upon its placement in UHV, or lead to a partial B-form to A-form reorganization upon DNA's deposition on a s ...

We demonstrate effective surface plasmon propagation along thin gold film in a blue spectral range: the measured 0.6 degrees angular width of the plasmon excitation peak corresponds to the propagation length around 7 mu m. For this end, we prepared a speci ...

A current-driven source of long-range surface plasmons (LRSPs) on a duplex metal nanolayer is reported. Electrical excitation of LRSPs was experimentally observed in a planar structure, where an organic light-emitting film was sandwiched between two metal ...

The emergence of antibiotic and antifungal resistant microorganisms represents nowadays a major public health issue that might push humanity into a post-antibiotic/antifungal era. One of the approaches to avoid such a catastrophe is to advance rapid antibi ...

Atomic force microscopy has been used to investigate the mechanical properties of microtubules. Method of Salvetat et al. [1], originally developed for measuring the Young's modulus of carbon nanotubes, has been extended to a biological system of similar geometry. Preliminary measurements of Young's modulus of microtubules in this configuration give a value of 74 MPa. Compression measurements on the same system give a value of 22 MPa, which is of the same order of magnitude, while values previously reported

The existence of life in extreme conditions, in particular in extraterrestrial environments, is certainly one of the most intriguing scientific questions of our time. In this report, we demonstrate the use of an innovative nanoscale motion sensor in life-s ...

We introduce and discuss a novel approach called back-calculation for analyzing force spectroscopy experiments on multimodular proteins. The relationship between the histograms of the unfolding forces for different peaks, corresponding to a different numbe ...

The operation of the scanning near-field optical microscope based on the double-resonant montage of a fiber probe onto the tuning fork (working frequency of the latter, that is 32 kHz, coincides with the second resonance frequency of the bending oscillatio ...

Atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanomotion detection is a label-free technique that has been used to monitor the response of microorganisms to antibiotics in a time frame of minutes. The method consists of attaching living organisms onto an AFM cantile ...

Aim: Atomic force microscopy nanoindentation of myofibers was used to assess and quantitatively diagnose muscular dystrophies from human patients. Materials & methods: Myofibers were probed from fresh or frozen muscle biopsies from human dystrophic patient ...

Recently, atomic force microscope (AFM) manufacturers have begun producing instruments specifically designed to image biological specimens. In most instances, they are integrated with an inverted optical microscope, which permits concurrent optical and AFM ...

In living cells, DNA is highly confined in space with the help of condensing agents, DNA binding proteins and high levels of supercoiling. Due to challenges associated with experimentally studying DNA under confinement, little is known about the impact of ...

We have characterized the polymer physics of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) using atomic force microscopy. The persistence length l(p) of circular ssDNA adsorbed on a modified graphite surface was determined independently of secondary structure. At a very low ...

Living single yeast cells show a specific cellular motion at the nanometer scale with a magnitude that is proportional to the cellular activity of the cell. We characterized this cellular nanomotion pattern of nonattached single yeast cells using classical ...

The metabolic activity of living organisms results in cellular motion on a nanometric scale that can be efficiently detected by micro- and nano- fabricated sensors. Quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy (AFM) inspired techniques have rece ...

Chemical characterization at the nanoscale is of significant importance for many applications in physics, analytical chemistry, material science, and biology. Despite the intensive studies in the infrared range, high-spatial resolution and high-sensitivity ...

The integrity of the chromatin structure is essential to every process occurring within eukaryotic nuclei. However, there are no reliable tools to decipher the molecular composition of metaphase chromosomes. Here, we have applied infrared nanospectroscopy ...
