Winged drones that fly in close proximity to obstacles or that are capable of aerial and terrestrial locomotion can benefit from protective systems that prevent damage to delicate aerial structures. Existing protective solutions focus on multi-copter drone ...

Because of their low weight, cost and energy consumption, optic-flow sensors attract growing interest in robotics for tasks such as self-motion estimation or depth measurement. Most applications require a large number of these sensors, which involves a fai ...

Here we describe a sensor capable of perceiving complex one-dimensional (1-D) shape of an underlying substrate in a static and dynamic manner. The sensor consists of seven, serially connected, hyper-flexible strain gauges, manufactured using stretchable-go ...

We describe evolution of spiking neural architectures to control navigation of autonomous mobile robots. Experimental results with simple fitness functions indicate that evolution can rapidly generate spiking circuits capable of navigating in textured envi ...

Delay-constrained streaming from a moving platform is of paramount importance for applications such as the remote control of drones, where a low-delay video stream is required in order to provide visual feedback to the pilot while providing high quality vi ...

The Self Deploying Microglider project aims at developing a novel palm sized robot that can climb up walls, deploy itself into the air, recover from every position in air and perform subsequent goal directed gliding and attachment to walls. So far, we developed a 1.5g SMA actuated Microglider that can perform phototaxis, a 4.5g wing folding mechanism that allows for very quick unfolding (50msec) of the wings and a 7g jumping mechanism that can jump up to 23times its size (corresponds to 1.15m). The applicat

The manual design of con- trol systems for robotic devices can be challenging. Methods for the automatic synthesis of control systems, such as the evolution of artificial neural networks, are thus widely used in the robotics community. However, in many rob ...

This paper presents a new paradigm in the design of indoor flying robots that replaces collision avoidance with collision robustness. Indoor flying robots must operate within constrained and cluttered environments where even nature’s most sophisticated fly ...

EPFL's Information Processing Group (IPG) and Laboratory for Intelligent Systems (LIS), in conjunction with SenseFly (a LIS spin-off) recently started a project aimed at developing a testbed to experiment with self-organized wireless networks carried by au ...

Jumping is used in nature by many small animals to locomote in cluttered environments or in rough terrain. It offers small systems the benefit of overcoming relatively large obstacles at a low energetic cost. In order to be able to perform repetitive jumps ...

A method for remotely controlling an operated unmanned object, comprises defining of a set of control movements of an operator; selecting of minimal necessary signals to reliably acquire the operator's control movements; defining of a mapping of the contro ...

Aerial robots are often required to remain within the communication range of a base station on the ground to exchange commands, sensor data or as a safety mechanism. For this purpose, we propose a minimal control strategy for steering flying robots using o ...

In minimally invasive surgery, such as cardiac ablation, magnetically steered catheters made of variable-stiffness materials can enable higher dexterity and higher force application to human tissue. However, the long transition time between soft and rigid ...

Untethering can allow soft modular robots to move from the laboratory test bench into realistic environments and commercial use. However, today’s state of the art soft modular robots remain electrically connected to external power sources and controllers. ...

Flying robots are rapidly becoming an essential tool in search and rescue missions because they can rapidly gather information from inaccessible or unsafe locations, thus increasing safety and rapidity of interventions. With this aim, we present a pocket s ...

This paper presents a Miniature Aerial Vehicle (MAV) capable of hands-off autonomous operation within indoor environments. Our prototype is a Quadrotor weighing approximately 600g, with a diameter of 550mm, which carries the necessary electronics for stabi ...

Take-off and landing manoeuvres are critical for MAVs because GPS-based autopilots usually do not perceive distance to the ground or other potential obstacles. In addition, attitude estimates based on inertial sensors are often perturbed by the strong acce ...

Food animation is gaining increasing attention for the ability to reduce waste and increase attractiveness in animals and humans. Although several examples of food animation methods have been recently described, the speed and range of motion are still limi ...

The conventional approach to parcel placement in most delivery drone designs today is to place the parcel centrally beneath the drone's rotor plane. However, if the parcel is too large, this will result in an obstruction of the propeller slipstream, incurr ...
