The FlyJacket is a wearable jacket designed to allow a user to intuitively control a fixed-wing drone by moving their torso. We embedded haptic feedback into the jacket using closed inflated air pouches compressed by motors to provide haptic feedback on th ...

Transient robots are robots designed to be non-long-lasting and degradable over time. This design philosophy is ideal for a wide range of applications, from environmental monitors to implantable systems. In this commentary, we explore the concept of transi ...

Bio-inspired underwater robots have several benefits compared to traditional underwater vehicles such as agility, efficiency, and an environmentally friendly body. However, the bio-inspired underwater robots developed so far have a single swimming mode, wh ...

Most human–drone interfaces, such as joysticks and remote controllers, require attention and developed skills during teleoperation. Wearable interfaces could enable a more natural and intuitive control of drones, which would make this technology accessible ...

The goal of this project is to develop an autonomous microflyer capable of navigating within houses or small built environments using vision as main source of information. Flying indoor implies a number of challenges that are not found in outdoor autonomous flight. These include small size and slow speed for maneuverability, light weight to stay airborne, low-consumption electronics, and smart sensing and control to fly in textured environment.

The design of wearable systems comes with constraints in computational and power resources. We describe the development of customized hardware for the wearable discrimination of human sleep and wake based on cardio-respiratory signals. The device was desig ...

High levels of cooperation are often cited as the primary reasons for the ecological success of social insects. In social insects, workers perform a multitude of tasks such as foraging, nest construction and brood rearing without central control of how wor ...

A novel variable stiffness actuator composed of a dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) and a low-melting-point-alloy (LMPA) embedded silicone substrate is demonstrated. The device which we call variable stiffness dielectric elastomer actuator (VSDEA) enable ...

Reverse engineering methods are typically first tested on simulated data from in silico networks, for systematic and efficient performance assessment, before an application to real biological networks. In this paper we present a method for generating biolo ...

Actigraphy for long-term sleep/wake monitoring fails to correctly classify situations where the subject displays low activity, but is awake. In this paper we propose a new algorithm which uses both accelerometer and cardio-respiratory signals to overcome t ...

Perching with winged Unmanned Aerial Vehicles has often been solved by means of complex control or intricate appendages. Here, we present a method that relies on passive wing morphing for crash-landing on trees and other types of vertical poles. Inspired b ...

In the growing field of collective robotics, spatial co-ordination between robots is often critical and usually achieved via local relative positioning sensors. We believe that range and bearing sensing, based on infrared technology, has the potential to f ...

Groups of fixed-wing robots can benefit from moving in synchrony to share sensing and communication capabilities, avoid collisions or produce visually pleasing choreographies. For this reason, we provide a strategy to produce global group movement that can ...

Recently, the notion that the brain is fundamentally a prediction machine has gained traction within the cognitive science community. Consequently, the ability to learn accurate predictors from experience is crucial to creating intelligent robots. However, ...

Flying robots have unique advantages in the exploration of cluttered environments such as caves or collapsed buildings. Current systems however have difficulty in dealing with the large amount of obstacles inherent to such environments. Collisions with obs ...

Haptic guidance has been shown to improve performance in many fields as it can give additional information without overloading other sensory channels such as vision or audition. Our group is investigating new intuitive ways to interact with robots, and we ...

Origami manufacturing has led to considerable advances in the field of foldable structures with innovative applications in robotics, aerospace, and metamaterials. However, existing origami are either load-bearing structures that are prone to tear and fail ...

Inspired by the pioneering work by Held and Hein (1963) on the development of kitten visuo-motor systems, we explore the role of active body movement in the developmental process of the visual system by using robots. The receptive fields in an evolved mobi ...

In nature, many animals are able to jump, upright themselves after landing and jump again. This allows them to move in unstructured and rough terrain. As a further development of our previously presented 7g jumping robot, we consider various mechanisms ena ...
