A new biologically-inspired vision sensor made of one hundred "eyes" is presented, which is suitable for real-time acquisition and processing of 3-D image sequences. This device, named the Panoptic camera, consists of a layered arrangement of approximately ...

Wireless power and data communication systems in implantable medical devices (IMDs) are developed to control and report acquired biological data from an implanted device to an external stage in several medical applications. Ultrasonic, capacitive, optical, ...

A new type of wireless neural recording front-end with PWM modulation and VCO-based ADC is proposed. The target signal is first encoded into binary levels with varying pulse width by PWM modulation, which intrinsically has much higher dynamic range compare ...

A low-density parity check (LDPC) circuit and its properties as a post-processor is proposed for physically unclonable functions (PUFs) applications. PUFs can be realized using process variations or signal noises in SRAM or other PUF circuits, whereas the ...

Recent high-density CMOS-based MEAs contain thousands of electrodes. Hence, an off-chip acquisition system performing data compression prior to visualization and analysis on a computer is required in order to handle the large amount of data generated by ac ...

A new method for safe electrical neural stimulation is proposed. A negative feedback is used to automatically produce short anodic pulses according to the remaining voltage. The period of the short anodic pulses varies according to the remaining voltage. T ...

This paper introduces an area- and power-efficient approach for compressive recording of cortical signals used in an implantable system prior to transmission. Recent research on compressive sensing has shown promising results for sub-Nyquist sampling of sp ...

Intracranial EEG information used for epilepsy surgery has been provided from large widely spaced electrodes over a narrow bandwidth. However, over the last decades, research on animal and more recently on human, promoted by increased interest in developing high-density microelectrode arrays (MEA), has opened new windows for the comprehension of seizure origin and propagation at a submillimeter scale. From an electrophysiological perspective MEA demonstrate to be able to record local field potentials record

The analysis of the operation of non-linear circuits such as voltage level shifters and latched comparators and therefore prediction of their propagation delay and power consumption are challenging. This is because the operating points of the employed non- ...

Coupling coefficients calculation is known to be a critical issue in embedded Non-Volatile Memory (eNVM) compact modeling. In this paper we have implemented the charge balance method within the Brew’s Charge Sheet Model equation, determining the floating g ...

Real-time disparity estimation requires real-time rectification which involves solving the models of lens distortions, image translations and rotations. Low complexity look-up-table based rectification algorithms usually require an external memory to store ...

This paper presents a new approach for monitoring and estimating device reliability of nanometer-scale devices prior to fabrication. A four-layer architecture exhibiting a large immunity to permanent as well as random failures is used. A complete tool for a-priori functional fault tolerance analysis was developed. It is a statistical Monte Carlo based tool that induces different failure models, and does subsequent evaluation of system reliability under realistic constraints. A structured fault modeling arch

Panoptic is a custom spherical light field camera used as a polydioptric system where imagers are distributed over a spherical geometry, each having its own vision of the surrounding and a distinct focal plane. The spherical light field camera records ligh ...

This paper presents the design of a 13.56 MHz full-wave active rectifier that utilizes digitally-assisted and delay compensated comparators for wirelessly powered biomedical implants. The proposed design employs delay compensation and digital assistance te ...

Defects in MOSFET oxides are a major issue in CMOS technologies, affecting not only the device electrical performances but also compromising reliability and endurance. Using Charge-Pumping and C-V measurements, defects have been characterized in native and electrically-aged oxides. These electrical measurements have been compared to the predictions of advanced simulations, accounting for multi-phonon assisted emission/capture rates and including the presence of multiple defects and the contribution of elect

This paper proposes an unconventional image acquisition scheme for machine vision applications, based on detecting ratios of illumination (pixel) intensities. Detecting relative ratios enables capturing the scene features and patterns almost independently ...

Fault-tolerant design methods for VLSI circuits, which have traditionally been addressed at system level, will not be adequate for future very-deep submicron CMOS devices where serious degradation of reliability is expected. Therefore, a new design approac ...

Effective power management is crucial in designing wirelessly powered implants that have a long operational lifetime. It ensures that the received power is optimized for efficient operation and prevents damage caused by excessive or insufficient powering. ...

This paper proposes a system to transfer both mW-power and Mbps-data over an inductive link using a single pair of coils. The system is able to handle a wide range of loads by implementing a load adapter block that divides the operation into two phases: a ...
