This paper is focused on modeling and performance investigation of insulin injection pens used by diabetic persons. A smart pen cap with two electrodes is used as a capacitive sensor for insulin dose detection and is presented in details. To faithfully ana ...

This paper presents a novel tunable bandpass filter design with independent control of both the centre frequency and the bandwidth by means of analogue-series and digital-shunt MEMS capacitors. The filter is designed for operation in X and Ku bands with 4 pre-selected centre frequencies (from 10 GHz to 14 GHz) and with a bandwidth tunability of 70% (variable between 500 MHz and 1 GHz). The filter originally includes a fine frequency tuning to correct the centre frequency position that slightly and intrinsic

Wireless implantable neural recording chips enable multichannel data acquisition with high spatiotemporal resolution in situ. Recently, the use of machine learning approaches on neural data for diagnosis and prosthesis control have renewed the interest in ...

This paper presents a low-voltage low-power high-speed superregenerative receiver operating in the 2.4-GHz industrial-scientific-medical band. The receiver uses an architecture in which, thanks to the presence of a phase-locked loop, the quench oscillator ...

A full remotely powered system for metabolism monitoring of free-moving mice is presented here. The fully implantable sensing platform hosts two ASICs, one off-the-shelf micro-controller, four biosensors, two other sensors, a coil to receive power, and an ...

In this work, we present the general concept of an instrumented smart knee prosthesis for in-vivo measurement of forces and kinematics. This system can be used for early monitoring of the patient after implantation and prevent possible damage to the prosth ...

This paper introduces a dual-band inductive link designed to operate at both 6.78 and 13.56 MHz in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. The primary aim is to facilitate wireless power and data transmission in multisite biomedical implants. ...

A platform to study ultrasound as a source for wireless energy transfer and communication for implanted medical devices is described. A tank is used as a container for a pair of electroacoustic transducers, where a control unit is fixed to one wall of the tank and a transponder can be manually moved in three axes and rotate using a mechanical system. The tank is filled with water to allow acoustic energy and data transfer, and the system is optimized to avoid parasitic effects due to cables, reflection path

Energy efficiency is of utmost importance in modern applications. Power consumption optimisation could be improved by a comprehensive analytical modeling of the characteristics of critical blocks in a system. Dynamic range (DR) has a strong effect on the p ...

Process and temperature independent RF front-end design is important for remotely powered RFID tags and wireless sensor systems. Run-to-run process variations can impact the remote powering performance and therefore read range of aforementioned systems. We ...

In this work, we show the realization of a fully-implantable device for monitoring free-moving small animals. The device integrates a microfabricated sensing platform, a coil for power and data transmission and two custom designed integrated circuits. The ...

We describe an Ultra-Wide Band Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA) with a variable gain that works in the 4.0 GHz to 4.5 GHz frequency range and is made with off-the-shelf discrete components. This LNA has a 30 dB variable gain and a noise figure of 2.2 dB. It was i ...

This paper presents an energy-efficient analog front-end circuit to monitor the pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) with piezoresistive pressure sensors. A low-power capacitively-coupled instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) is developed in order to boost the ampli ...

This paper presents the design of a dual-channel 4-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for the sub-sampling impulse radio ultra-wideband receiver with the sampling rate of 2.112 GS/s. The ADC's specifications are optimized at the system level. Two parall ...

Wireless power and data communication systems in implantable medical devices (IMDs) are developed to control and report acquired biological data from an implanted device to an external stage in several medical applications. Ultrasonic, capacitive, optical, ...

An optical pancreatic beta-cell based biosensor for measuring cytosolic [Ca2+] is presented in this work. An in vitro bio-electronic system is built for testing various applications and characterizing features of the biosensor. A panoply of applications su ...

This paper presents the effect of coupling between the coils on the power amplifier efficiency and comparisons between the class-C and class-D performance for different coupling conditions. In remotely powered systems, the coupling of the coils can influen ...

A glass pill for digestive motility tracking with wireless communication is presented. The pill encapsulates three magnetic transmitter coils with a 125 kHz signal, the circuitry required to control the magnetic coil output and the battery. The system prov ...

Intracranial EEG information used for epilepsy surgery has been provided from large widely spaced electrodes over a narrow bandwidth. However, over the last decades, research on animal and more recently on human, promoted by increased interest in developing high-density microelectrode arrays (MEA), has opened new windows for the comprehension of seizure origin and propagation at a submillimeter scale. From an electrophysiological perspective MEA demonstrate to be able to record local field potentials record

An ambulatory gait analysis method using body-attached gyroscopes to estimate spatio-temporal parameters of gait has been proposed and validated against a reference system for normal and pathologic gait. Later, ten Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) implantation participated in gait measurements using our device. They walked one to three times on a 20-m walkway. Patients did the test twice: once STN-DBS was ON and once 180 min after turning it OFF. A
